  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Active Oxygen in Biochemistry written by Valentine Angelou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of "Oxygen Activation" has attracted considerable interest recently, not only because it presents challenges in those fields of basic research that aim to understand the fundamental aspects of chemical and biological reactions that involve dioxygen, but also because of its wide range of practical implications in such diverse fields as medicine, synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds, materials science, and atmospheric science. This is the second of two volumes that focus on the subject of oxygen activation, the first slanted toward chemistry and the second toward biological chemistry. We planned these volumes to be more general than many monographs of this sort, not as detailed summaries of the authors' own research but rather as general overviews of the field. Our choice of topics was strongly influenced by our syllabus for a course entitled "Oxygen Chemistry," which two of us have twice taught jointly at UCLA. Definition of important issues, horizons, and future prospects was an important goal, and, although totally comprehensive coverage was not possible, we believe that we have chosen a representative selection of research topics current to the field. We have targeted this work to a diverse audience ranging from professionals in fields from physics to medicine to beginning graduate students who are interested in rapidly acquiring the basics of this field.

Book The Time Domain in Surface and Structural Dynamics

Download or read book The Time Domain in Surface and Structural Dynamics written by G.J Long and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About two years ago, while studying the dynamic properties of Fe (CO)IJ ,we realized that there 3 was virtually no single source of infonnation on the structural dynamics of materials. The time domain of different dynamic structural processes covers many orders of magnitude and may be in vestigated by numerous, vastly different, experimental techniques. Indeed, the subject seemed ap propriate for a NATO Advanced Study Institute at which we could bring together chemists, physicists, metallurgists, and bioscientists using the various techniques for the study of sundry time sensitive materials. The actual Advanced Study Institute, which met in II Ciocco, Italy, from 14 to 26 June 1987, was, in fact, a dynamic experience for those of us involved. Now we have come to the final phase, the communication of the results of this Advanced Study Institute to the general scientific community. In so doing, we hope to provide in one place a convenient source of infor mation on dynamics at the surface and within a solid state material. The beautiful mountainous setting of Tuscany and especially the idyllic surroundings of II Ciocco provided an ideal venue for the Advanced Study Institute. Our field trip to Pisa linked our topic to the history of time measurement through a visit to the Pisa cathedral where, presumably, Galileo first conceived the isochronism of the simple pendulum and its use in time measurement.

Book Mammalian Protein Metabolism

Download or read book Mammalian Protein Metabolism written by H. N. Munro and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammalian Protein Metabolism, Volume I focuses on the processes, methodologies, biosynthesis, protein formation, and reactions involved in mammalian protein metabolism. The selection first elaborates on the origin and growth of concepts of protein metabolism, including the development of nitrogen balance as a technique for the study of protein metabolism; identification of proteins as a chemical class; discovery of nitrogen and its biological consequences; and recognition of the importance of nitrogenous compounds. The text then examines protein digestion and absorption in nonruminants and digestion and absorption of nitrogenous compounds in ruminants. Topics include passage of nitrogenous compounds from the rumen; utilization of nitrogenous compounds in the rumen; and endogenous nitrogen entering the reticulum and rumen. The book examines free amino acids and peptides in tissues, metabolic fate of amino acids, protein biosynthesis in mammalian tissues, and metabolism of plasma proteins. Discussions focus on the distribution of proteins between plasma and lymph, interpretation of plasma radioactivities, amino acid activating enzymes, ribosomes and protein synthesis, pathways of amino acid degradation, and synthesis of urea. The selection is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in mammalian protein metabolism.

Book Biologically Inspired Physics

Download or read book Biologically Inspired Physics written by L. Peliti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop "Biologically Inspired Physics" was organized, with the support of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division and the Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development of the Commission of the European Communities, in order to review some subjects of physics of condensed matter which are inspired by biological problems or deal with biological systems, but which address physical questions. The main topics discussed in the meeting were: 1. Macromolecules: In particular, proteins and nucleic acids. Special emphasis was placed on modelling protein folding, where analogies with disordered systems in con densed matter (glasses, spin glasses) were suggested. It is not clear at this point whether such analogies will help in solving the folding problem. Interesting problems in nucleic acids (in particular DNA) deal with the dynamics of semiflexible chains with torsion and the relationship between topology and local structure. They arise from such biological problems as DNA packing or supercoiling. 2. Membranes: This field has witnessed recent progress in the understanding of the statistical mechanics of fluctuating flexible sheets, such as lipid bilayers. It appears that one is close to understanding shape fluctuations in red blood cells on a molec ular basis. Open problems arise from phenomena such as budding or membrane fusion. Experiments on model systems, such as vesicle systems or artificial lipids, have great potential. Phenomena occurring inside the membrane (protein diffusion, ionic pumps) were only discussed briefly.
