Book excerpt: Performance tests of a spectrometer tube of the type developed by Cuttler and Shalev show that the measurement of fast neutron spectra with this device can be made with an energy resolution previously obtainable only in large time-of-flight facilities. In preliminary tests, resolutions of 16.4 keV for thermal neutrons and 30.9 keV for 1-MeV neutrons were obtained. A broad-window pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) system is used to remove from pulse-height distributions most of the continua due to 3He-recoil events, noise, and wall effect. Use of PSD improved the energy resolution to 12.9 keV for thermal neutrons and 29.2 keV for 1-MeV neutrons. The detector is a viable tool for neutron research at nominally equipped accelerator laboratories.

The spectrometer utilizes the isochronous principle that monoenergetic neutrons scattered from a hydrogenous medium arrive at a suitably oriented spherical surface after a fixed transit time. The scatterer (start'' detector) is a cylinder of NE-102 plastic scintillator 3 in. long and 1/2 in. diameter. The stop'' detector, also of NE-120, is a segment of a spherical shell with tapering thickness selected to obtain optimum resolution. This scintiliator has a cap diameter of 18 inches with the radius of curvature of the spherical surface being 30 inches. A conventional time-to-pulse-height converter is used. Energy resolution of 9-14% was obtained for the energy range 1.8
