Book The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams

Download or read book The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams written by David K. Bewley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-10-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over fifty years have passed since the first patient was treated with fast neutrons, but this form of therapy is still a matter of bitter dispute. Neutron generators have been installed in many countries and now patients can be treated with equipment that is technically similar to modern megavoltage x-ray equipment. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams presents a full discussion of the physical and radiobiological factors governing the production and use of fast neutron beams for therapy. The book discusses vastly improved neutron generators, advances in the standardization of dosimetric methods, and the specification of radiation quality. In addition, it explores nuclear methods of analysis, particularly neutron activation analysis in vivo. Influencing the place of radiotherapy with neutrons and other heavy particles, the radiobiological factors governing the treatment of cancer with radiation are examined. The author also studies the radiation hazard of neutrons, a matter of importance in the use of neutrons for chemical analysis in vivo. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams will be a valuable introduction to the subject for radiotherapists, medical physicists, radiographers, and radiobiologists new to the field. The book is also a useful summary of current knowledge for those already established in the use of fast neutrons for medical purposes.

Download or read book Neutron Physics written by Karl-Heinrich Beckurts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon a series of lectures I have occasionally given at the University of Gottingen since 1951. They were meant to introduce the students of experimental physics to the work in a neutron physics laboratory dealing with the problem of measuring neutron flux, diffusion length, Fermi age, effective neutron temperature, absorption cross sections and similar problems. Moreover, these lectures were intended to prepare the students for a subsequent lecture covering the physics of nuclear reactors. The original character of this series of lectures has been retained in the book. It is intended for use by students as well as anyone desiring to work on neutron physics measurements. The first half mainly covers the theory of neutron fields, i. e. essentially diffusion and slowing down theory. The second half is largely concerned with measurements in neutron fields. The appendix contains information and data which, in our experience, are frequently required in a neutron laboratory. The field of nuclear physics proper is briefly touched upon in the first two chapters, but only to the extent necessary for the understanding of the following chapters. The multitude of applications of neutron radiation has not been covered. The conclusion of this manuscript coincided with the end of my long period of activity with the Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik at Gottingen. To Professor HEISENBERG lowe thanks for his advice and suggestions for many of the subjects treated here.

Book Neutron Radiative Capture

Download or read book Neutron Radiative Capture written by B. J. Allen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron Physics and Nuclear Data in Science and Technology, Volume 3: Neutron Radiative Capture discusses topics that help bridge the gap between experimental and theoretical scientists and applications scientists and engineers. The first chapter discusses the theory of slow neutron radiative capture, while the second chapter covers fast neutron radiative capture. Chapter III talks about methods for calculating neutron capture cross sections and gamma-ray spectra, while Chapter IV deals with the measurement techniques for radiative neutron capture, and Chapter V discusses neutron capture processes in fission reactors. The sixth chapter covers applications to stellar nucleosynthesis and the seventh chapter covers the practical uses of neutron capture gamma-ray spectroscopy. The book is meant for the use of graduate students who are knowledgeable about basic nuclear physics.

Book Neutron Physics for Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Neutron Physics for Nuclear Reactors written by Salvatore Esposito and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume gives an accurate and very detailed description of the functioning and operation of basic nuclear reactors, as emerging from yet unpublished papers by Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi. In the first part, the entire course of lectures on Neutron Physics delivered by Fermi at Los Alamos is reported, according to the version made by Anthony P French. Here, the fundamental physical phenomena are described very clearly and comprehensively, giving the appropriate physics grounds for the functioning of nuclear piles. In the second part, all the patents issued by Fermi (and coworkers) on the functioning, construction and operation of several different kinds of nuclear reactors are reported. Here, the main engineering problems are encountered and solved by employing simple and practical methods, which are described in detail. This seminal work mainly caters to students, teachers and researchers working in nuclear physics and engineering, but it is of invaluable interest to historians of physics too, since the material presented here is entirely novel.

Download or read book Neutron Physics written by Paul Reuss and published by EDP Sciences. This book was released on 2012-12-03T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally just an offshoot of nuclear physics, neutron physics soon became a branch of physics in its own right. It deals with the movement of neutrons in nuclear reactors and all the nuclear reactions they trigger there, particularly the fission of heavy nuclei which starts a chain reaction to produce energy. Neutron Physics covers the whole range of knowledge of this complex science, discussing the basics of neutron physics and some principles of neutron physics calculations. Because neutron physics is the essential part of reactor physics, it is the main subject taught to students of Nuclear Engineering. This book takes an instructional approach for that purpose. Neutron Physics is also intended for all physicists and engineers involved in development or operational aspects of nuclear power.
