Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Farragut Naval Training Station, located near Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, was only operational between 1942 and 1946, but during that time it was the largest city in Idaho, the largest business in Idaho, and the second-largest U.S. naval training station. Named for Civil War hero Adm. David G. Farragut, it trained sailors from 23 different states and by June 15, 1946, the day its doors closed, a total of 293,381 recruits, or "boots," and over 25,943 service-school sailors had passed through its doors. At least two Medal of Honor recipients and one Navy Cross recipient, along with a future governor of Idaho, spent time at the station. After its decommissioning, it served as the Farragut College and Technical Institute. Today it is the site of Farragut State Park and a small U.S. Navy acoustic research detachment.

Download or read book Idaho State Parks written by Rick Just and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idaho’s state parks have been called the “jewels” of the Gem State. The story of how those jewels came to be involves political intrigue, much resistance, some philanthropy, and a touch of irony. Sen. Weldon B. Heyburn famously said that state parks were “always a political embarrassment.” Idaho’s first state park was named after him. Today, Idaho’s 30 state parks host five million people a year. Visitors come to boat, camp, bike, climb, hike, fish, and make memories in the great outdoors. This book tells the story of Idaho’s diverse state parks—from Priest Lake in Idaho’s panhandle to Bear Lake in the southeast corner of the state—through a wealth of historical photographs. A variety of parks are featured, including ones that were lost, found, or never came to fruition.

What was meant by the "Magic Carpet" brigade? What did "Hollywood Stars" think of the war? Why did a Polish woman bury glass jars at the base of a tree? Why do the "guards" at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier have "wet" gloves? Who were "Ripley's Raiders?" Why were sailing ships used during WW II? What is an "ash can?" What president of a major food company paid for a full eight course dinner for four sailors on leave? These and many other questions are answered in the book! Read about the "airman" who became a "guest" at Stalag I 7B and how he coped with the situation. Read about the eye-opening experience a medical corpsman experienced when he crossed the equator! Read about "Operation Detachment" and the terrifying experience of the taking of Iwo Jima, culminating in the famous "raising of the flag" picture on the cover of this book. Read some of the poignant VVW Il poetry penned by a lonely G.l. Read about the Vietnam Memorial wall and a veteran's visit that brought healing to him and his fellow veterans. Michigan Military - Michigan Pride is designed to honor veterans and active service people throughout America. Admiral Chester Nimitz, CINCPAC, WVV Il stated: "Among the Americans who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue." That sentiment can be ascribed to all who have fought to retain America's freedom and independence. It is important we remember that "Freedom - is not free!" It is also important to remember - "Our Military - Keeps America Freel"

Book Haunted Histories in America

Download or read book Haunted Histories in America written by Nancy Hendricks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you believe in ghosts, you're in good company. Haunted Histories brings America's most ghostly locales to life, illuminating their role in shaping U.S. history and detailing how they became the nation's most feared places. Haunted Histories takes readers on a state-by-state journey across the United States, exploring the nation's most feared places. Along the way, the text introduces readers to new ghostly tales and takes a fresh look at familiar stories and locations, with an eye to history. From well-known spooky spots like Salem, Massachusetts, to such lesser-known ones as the Shanghai Tunnels of Portland, Oregon, where spirits are supposedly trapped, readers will discover not only where America's most haunted places are but also why they are said to be haunted. The ghosts of the doomed Donner Party allow readers to experience the arduous and often deadly journey of America's westward wagon trains, while different kinds of "spirits" haunting old distilleries allow readers to discover how whiskey almost derailed the new American nation before it was born. This book can be studied for academic purposes as a historical reference, used as a source for classroom assignments, or simply read for the pleasure of a great story.

Book Miracle in the South Pacific

Download or read book Miracle in the South Pacific written by Robert J. Loyd and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, Robert Loyd was a sixteen-year-old without a drivers license or a car who had just moved to St. Louis from the countryside. The Uncle Sam Wants You! posters hanging in every public building enticed him to lie about his age and join the fight. After graduating from the program at Farragut Naval Training Station, he was assigned to overhauling the USS Dewey, a destroyer, in Bremerton, Washington. When the Dewey was deemed seaworthy, his group received orders to join the Third Fleet in the Pacific and arrived in Honolulu in October 1943. The next months were spent in and around Ulithi atoll in the Western Caroline Islands, protecting and escorting the fleets carriers, tankers, and cruisers. In December 1944, the Dewey weathered a powerful typhoon, her crew lashed to their bunks or to stanchions, as the ship was tossed by winds and rain and finally righted itself after an eighty-degree roll. After repairs, the ship rejoined the fleet in February 1945 and supported the invasion of Iwo Jima. The Dewey was decommissioned in October 1945, and the author returned to civilian life in May 1946.
