Download or read book From Dismal Swamp to Smiling Farms written by Michael Classens and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driving through the Holland Marsh one is struck immediately by the black richness of its soil. Located just north of Toronto, this is some of the most profitable farmland in Canada. It is also a canary in a coal mine. From Dismal Swamp to Smiling Farms recounts the transformation, use, and protection of the Holland Marsh, demonstrating how liberal notions of progress and nature have shaped, and ultimately imperilled, this small agricultural preserve. This fascinating case study reveals the contradictions and deficiencies of contemporary farmland preservation paradigms, highlighting the challenges of forging a more socially just and ecologically rational food system.

Book excerpt: Driving through the Holland Marsh one is struck immediately by the black richness of its soil. This is some of the most profitable farmland in Canada. But the small agricultural preserve just north of Toronto is a canary in a coal mine. From Dismal Swamp to Smiling Farms recounts the transformation, use, and protection of the Holland Marsh, exploring how human ideas about nature shape agriculture, while agriculture in turn shapes ideas about nature. Drawing on interviews, media accounts and archival data, Michael Classens concludes that celebrations of the Marsh as the quintessential example of peri-urban food sustainability and farmland protection have been too hasty. Instead, he demonstrates how capitalism and liberalism have fashioned, and ultimately imperilled, agriculture in the area. The social and ecological crises of our industrialized food system are becoming more acute, and questions about where our food comes from and under what conditions have never been more important. At the centre of these questions--and of any efforts to re-localize food systems--is the land. This fascinating case study reveals the contradictions and deficiencies of contemporary farmland preservation paradigms, highlighting the challenges of forging a more socially just and ecologically rational food system.

Book Digital Soil Mapping Across Paradigms Scales and Boundaries

Download or read book Digital Soil Mapping Across Paradigms Scales and Boundaries written by Gan-lin Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the 6th Global Workshop on Digital Soil Mapping, held 11-14 November 2014 at the Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences of Nanjing, China. Digital soil mapping is advancing on different fronts at different paces throughout the world. The researches and applications on DSM are moving from method development to realizations in different scales and regions, serving the generation of national and continental to global soil grids. Meanwhile, new ideas and insights on mapping complex soil-landscapes such as flat plains, anthropogenically altered agriculture and urban spaces are emerging, with the help of new paradigms and models. The goal of the sixth workshop was to review and discuss the state of the art in digital soil mapping, and to explore strategies for bridging research, production, and environmental applications. This book provides a very useful and comprehensive overview of the status of digital soil mapping, in which graduate students, scientists and specialists working within the field of geography can find the spatial prediction approaches and related theory.

Book Advances in Neural Networks Research

Download or read book Advances in Neural Networks Research written by D.C. Wunsch II and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-08-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IJCNN is the flagship conference of the INNS, as well as the IEEE Neural Networks Society. It has arguably been the preeminent conference in the field, even as neural network conferences have proliferated and specialized. As the number of conferences has grown, its strongest competition has migrated away from an emphasis on neural networks. IJCNN has embraced the proliferation of spin-off and related fields (see the topic list, below), while maintaining a core emphasis befitting its name. It has also succeeded in enforcing an emphasis on quality.

Book Embracing the salt marsh

Download or read book Embracing the salt marsh written by J.A.W. Nicolay and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a modern-day perspective, it may seem odd that people should have chosen to dwell in the open salt-marsh landscape along the Wadden Sea coast. While the beauty of the salt marshes is widely acknowledged, the idea of living there seems to suggest struggle and misery. Yet the salt-marsh settlers, dwelling on their settlement mounds or terps, did not just ‘survive' or ‘get by', but actually managed to live a good life, by embracing this marshy world and its peculiarities. This collection of papers focuses on foraging, farming and food preparation in the context of the salt-marsh environment. The various contributions celebrate the career and work of Annet Nieuwhof, who has been an inspirational colleague and great friend to many of us. She passionately embraced terp research, always actively stimulating cooperation across disciplines as well as national borders. Reflecting some of Annet's wide-ranging interests, the present volume is dedicated to her in friendship and gratitude.
