Book Farming for Boys Classic Reprint

Download or read book Farming for Boys Classic Reprint written by Edmund Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farming for Boys The mass of farmers' boys understand that they must carve out their own fortunes. If their parents would afford them some little Opportunity to begin early, - an equal one with the sharp newsboy of the city, - they too would become so shrewd, so self-reliant, so expert at acquisition, even on the farm, that, educated to moderation, they would be too well sat isfied with small gains to be overcome by the seductions of city life. If it be mere money which makes the latter attrae tive, a certainty of being able to acquire it at home would seem to be potent enough to surround with greater attractions the spot on which the farmer's boy may have been born. Book Autobiography of a Farm Boy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Autobiography of a Farm Boy Classic Reprint written by Isaac Phillips Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of a Farm Boy It is this courage, this steadfastness in the de termination to hold the field for agriculture, that grows larger in my estimation as the years go by. I speak of his work in the past tense, for I too look backward; but I am glad that he is still keen to follow the result Of his labors. It was not then a day for erudition, or for high technical scholarship, but a time for clear faith, homely and direct relations with the people, wisdom in giving advice. From the first years that I knew him he was a philosopher and a forecaster, always prae tical, always driving home the point, always with his feet squarely on the ground. He loved the farm; from the rail fence to the back lot, the trees in the pasture, the woodside, the orchard, every animal in stall or field, the high land and the low land, all were his to walk over, to question, to inspect with care, and to improve. It was one of the delights of his teaching to take his boys to the farm. He was a master in the practice Of observing farm conditions, why the grass was thin here and heavy there, why the weeds came in, why the animals chose the spot on which to lie, how to run the drains, to build a fence, to put up a shed or barn, to paint a building, how to break a horse, how to breed a herd from. A common foundation, how to sell a crop, what the weather meant, how to bring an old field back into good condition. He did not teach some small department of farm knowledge as we do in these days, but the Whole farm and the farmer and the wife and the children and the hired man; and he taught it with a quiet and genial philosophy, Often quaint and always full of good humor. He was the real teacher of the small group, preferring the out-of-doors and the barns and the herds to the formal laboratories. I have never known anyone to make such good educational use of an entire farm and its equipment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Gardening and Farming Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gardening and Farming Classic Reprint written by Ellen Eddy Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gardening and Farming This little group of boys had formed itself natu rally into a club. It met with The Chief every Saturday night. He was really no chief, this big, boy-loving man who had come to spend a while in this little country village, to rest and to write. The boys had named him The Chief because, as Albert said, He could lead any tribe and tame any savage. At this Albert always laughed for he himself had been called a savage. So many times he almost believed he was one. The boys dropped into their places. Jay, or the Little Chief as the boys called him, sat opposite the Big Chief at the end of the table and right in front of the fire. He was slim and tall and light of foot. He could run faster, throw farther, and play better than any other boy in the village. He always led, he never bullied, he played fair, so the other boys always followed. Albert, Jay's brother, big and heavy and as full of mischief as he could hold, took his place at The Chief's right hand. Albert called this his place of honour although knowing full well that he was there so The Chief might have him within reach. Next to Albert came George, frank-faced and bash ful, sturdy and loyal. Opposite him red-headed, stubby Peter sat always on the edge of his chair. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It will add greatly to the interest if a box of earth can be used in the class-room to illustrate the methods of planting, and specimens of the different seeds be handed about for examination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer Boy: And How He Became Commander-in-Chief The reader will find that Mr. Heady (uncle Juvi nell) has produced a very entertaining and instructive volume. It is written in a racy, sprightly style, that cannot fail to captivate the mind. Partaking himself of the buoyancy and good humor of boyhood, the author is able to write for the boys in a manner that is at once attractive and profitable. He has written a live book of one, who, though dead, yet speaketh. It is replete with facts, and lessons of wisdom. The virtues are taught both by precept and example, and the vices are held up in all their deformity to warn and save. Religion, too, receives its just tribute, and wears the crown of glory.
