Book excerpt: In May 1967, internationally renowned activist Fannie Lou Hamer purchased forty acres of land in the Mississippi Delta, launching the Freedom Farms Cooperative (FFC). A community-based rural and economic development project, FFC would grow to over 600 acres, offering a means for local sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and domestic workers to pursue community wellness, self-reliance, and political resistance. Life on the cooperative farm presented an alternative to the second wave of northern migration by African Americans--an opportunity to stay in the South, live off the land, and create a healthy community based upon building an alternative food system as a cooperative and collective effort. Freedom Farmers expands the historical narrative of the black freedom struggle to embrace the work, roles, and contributions of southern Black farmers and the organizations they formed. Whereas existing scholarship generally views agriculture as a site of oppression and exploitation of black people, this book reveals agriculture as a site of resistance and provides a historical foundation that adds meaning and context to current conversations around the resurgence of food justice/sovereignty movements in urban spaces like Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York City, and New Orleans.

Book Farmers and Farm Workers Movements

Download or read book Farmers and Farm Workers Movements written by Patrick H. Mooney and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The section on farm worker movements looks mainly at the agribusiness economy of California, beginning with farm worker mobilization in the depression era and the emergence of such prominent unions as the Cannery and Agricultural Workers Industrial Union and the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing, and Allied Workers of America. The authors extensively examine the United Farm Workers (UFW) activism that began in 1965 under the late Cesar Chavez and culminated in 1975 with the passage of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act. The achievements of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee in Ohio and Michigan during the 1980s and early 1990s is also compared with the relative failures of the UFW during that same time period, and the authors pay particular attention to the "control issues" that have been crucial among farm worker demands.

Book excerpt: The American Farm Bureau Federation was organized on November 12, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, by Farm Bureau leaders from 34 states. A declaration at the beginning of the convention said, "This country needs the sound, conservative common-sense of the farmers expressed in a collective and organized way." The newly-minted farm organization gave farmers and ranchers a voice and a seat at the table with the powerful economic interests of the day--business, manufacturing, railroads and labor. American Farm Bureau is the national advocate for farm and ranch families through good times and bad in the belief that a more prosperous agriculture contributes to the well-being of all Americans

Book Farmers Helping Farmers

Download or read book Farmers Helping Farmers written by Nancy K. Berlage and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the largest volunteer movements in the twentieth century, local farm and home bureau organizations have been woefully underrepresented in socio-political studies of the American Farm Bureau Federation. Nancy K. Berlage addresses this omission with an insightful look at how bureau members put university science to work in agricultural and rural life at the local level, even while industrialization, and urbanization profoundly shifted the landscape of labor in the U.S. In Farmers Helping Farmers, Berlage explores how bureaus served as the locus of science-based agriculture for rural communities. Drawing on community bonds and culturally powerful metaphors to overcome skepticism, bureaus played a critical role in circulating knowledge grounded in the new disciplines of agricultural economics, rural sociology, home economics, veterinary medicine, child science, and public health. Throughout the book, Berlage weaves a novel consideration of women's roles into the story of farm and home bureaus, noting that these organizations served as places where supporters could grapple with issues beyond farming practices such as child welfare, personal health, and gender ideals. They were also crucial in supporting the organization's underlying mission to strengthen community and family ties to the benefit of more efficient and productive farm. In addition to bureau documents, Berlage draws from cartoons, films, photographs, and personal correspondence, to add a human dimension this organizational history. The resultant analysis offers a fresh look at the local bureaus' social, economic, cultural, and political functions and book highlights the organizations' significant influence on American life in the early twentieth century.

Book Farmer Movements in the South 1865 1933 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Farmer Movements in the South 1865 1933 Classic Reprint written by Theodore Saloutos and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farmer Movements in the South, 1865-1933 Individual personalities should perhaps comprise a weighty portion of this study, but the obscure character of so many of the farm leaders (plus the fact that they did not keep diaries, correspondence, and a running account of their activities and business associations) makes it difficult, if not impossible, to write about them as persons. These organizations waged a multiple offensive on the social, political, and economic front; they cannot be said to have been inspired by a key idea, unless that key idea was to elevate the status of the farmer. But even this brought forth wide differences of Opinion as to the objectives, the tactics, and the general over-all strategy to be employed. By present-day standards the arguments of these organizations and their spokesmen sound commonplace; and judging from the remarks of some, they should be dismissed as insignificant. That these agrarians were erratic, inexperienced dreamers who were carried away by their enthusiasm, and despised by the better-placed members of society, is generally acknowledged. That frauds and impostors found their way into these organizations is likewise granted; but to adjudge all these people as frauds and impostors is a gross distortion of the facts. Society is composed of ephemeral groups with whom many of us are in disagree ment, and for whom many academicians in particular have nothing but contempt. But these people existed, agitated, and proselytized; they constituted a significant part of their times, whether we agree with them or not. The fact that critics consider their thinking shallow and pedestrian is no reason for denying them their place in history.
