Book Farmer based Financing of Operations in the Niger Valley Irrigation Schemes

Download or read book Farmer based Financing of Operations in the Niger Valley Irrigation Schemes written by Charles L. Abernethy and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2000 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with some experiences of a set of irrigation systems situated in the Republic of Niger, along both banks of the Niger River. All these systems draw water from the river through low-lift, electrically powered pumping stations, which have been installed by the Government of Niger over the past 30 years. Irrigation of this kind is not a tradition in Niger. The introduction of this technology caused considerable changes in the way of life of local communities.

Book Productivity and Performance of Irrigated Wheat Farms Across Canal Commands in the Lower Indus Basin

Download or read book Productivity and Performance of Irrigated Wheat Farms Across Canal Commands in the Lower Indus Basin written by Intizar Hussain and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2000 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the enormous differences in agricultural productivity that exist across farms and regions in Pakistan, where, for example, recent farm-level data from Sindh, indicates that irrigated wheat output per hectare varies from 0.5 to 5.4 tons across farms. Looks at the central goal of agricultural policy in the country, viz. improving and sustaining productivity, narrowing the existing productivity gaps, and enhancing resource use efficiencies to meet food requirements of a rapidly growing population.

Book Alternate Wet dry Irrigation in Rice Cultivation

Download or read book Alternate Wet dry Irrigation in Rice Cultivation written by Wim van der Hoek and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More irrigated land is devoted to rice than to any other crop. A method to save water in irrigated rice cultivation is the intermittent drying of the rice fields, known as alternate wet/dry irrigation (AWDI). This report reviews previous studies in AWDI, with a focus on mosquito vector control, water saving, and rice yields. Examples are provided from a number of countries.

Book Water Charging in Irrigated Agriculture

Download or read book Water Charging in Irrigated Agriculture written by Gez Cornish and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents an analysis of experience in irrigation water charging, drawn from published literature and a series of six case studies. These sources provide a broad spectrum of experience from less-developed to more-developed countries. Book Assessing the outcomes of IWMI s research and interventions on irrigation management transfer

Download or read book Assessing the outcomes of IWMI s research and interventions on irrigation management transfer written by Giordano, Meredith, Samad, Madar, Namara, Regassa and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2006 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to summarize IIMI/IWMI’s past research and interventions related to irrigation management transfer and to document, to the extent possible, the academic, policy, and technical outcomes of these efforts. The application of a range of direct and indirect measurement techniques suggests an overall positive contribution from IWMI to IMT theory and application.

Book International Research on Natural Resource Management

Download or read book International Research on Natural Resource Management written by Hermann Waibel and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, significant investment has been made into agriculture-related natural resource management research in developing countries. This collection of case studies establishes a methodological foundation for impact assessments of NRMR through a discussion of research conducted by the CGIAR around the world.

Book Using Remote Sensing Techniques to Evaluate Lining Efficacy of Watercourses

Download or read book Using Remote Sensing Techniques to Evaluate Lining Efficacy of Watercourses written by R. Sakthivadivel and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies the low-cost alternative strategy of selective lining of watercourses to reduce seepage and increase irrigated areas in the Indian subcontinent. Satellite remote-sensing (SRS) is seen as a cost-effective evaluation tool in view of its large area of synoptic and repetitive coverage.

Book Basin level Use and Productivity of Water

Download or read book Basin level Use and Productivity of Water written by David Molden and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses and illustrates concepts for identifying ways of improving productivity of water within basins. The results of applying a water accounting procedure to four sub-basins in South Asia (Bhakra in India; Chishtian in Pakistan; Huruluwewa in nothern Sri Lanka; and Kirindi Oya in southern Sri Lanka) are presented. The methodology used identifies the quantities and productivity of various uses of water within a basin. This information is then used to identify the water-saving potential, and the means of improving the productivity of the managed supplies.

Book Modeling Scenarios for Water Allocation in the Gediz Basin Turkey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the use of a distributed hydrologic model to evaluate different data scenarios. The study attempted to answer questions such as; what will happen to the basin water resources if a) there is a change in climate; b) it is decided that more water must be retained in the river for environmental reasons; c) more water is extracted for urban and industrial use; d) the timing and accounts used for water are changed?

Book Private irrigation in Sub Saharan Africa regional Seminar on Private Sector Participation and Irrigation Expansion in Sub Saharan Africa Accra Ghana 22 26 October 2001

Download or read book Private irrigation in Sub Saharan Africa regional Seminar on Private Sector Participation and Irrigation Expansion in Sub Saharan Africa Accra Ghana 22 26 October 2001 written by Hilmy Sally and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only 4 percent of arable land in sub-Saharan Africa is irrigated, using just 2 percent of the available water resources. Furthermore, 18 percent of the area equipped for irrigation is not utilized at all and the intensity of use varies between 50 percent and 80 percent. This highlights the huge potential available for intensifying and expanding irrigated area, provided that the investments required can be successfully mobilized. However, it must be noted that if investments in irrigation are to yield satisfactory returns, investments must also be made in a series of related activities. Current global figures for the amount of private investment in irrigation confirm that good returns can indeed be achieved. Prospects for sub-Saharan Africa would be far more favorable if public development assistance, particularly foreign direct investments, did not show declining trends.
