Book Corn Cultivation Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn Cultivation As an average for nine years the Indiana Agricultural Experiment Station obtained best results from rows 3 feet 8 inches apart, with 1 stalk every 11 inches in the row. The Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station b after five years' tests directs as follows: On ordinary corn-belt land of northern Illinois plant corn hills 36 inches apart with 3 kernels per hill. In central Illinois on land of a productive capacity greater than 50 bushels per acre plant hills inches apart with 3 kernels per hill and on land of a lower productive capacity plant hills 36 inches apart with 2 kernels to the hill. On many farms of slight fertility in the leading corn States of the Mississippi Valley the annual yield is considerably reduced because the corn is planted as thickly as would be advisable on fertile prairie or bottom soils. Here the thinner planting practiced in regions generally less fertile could be adopted with advantage. Corn Should not be planted on soil so poor as to necessitate the placing of the rows 5 or 6 feet apart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Practice in the Cultivation of Cotton In this division, especially in Mississippi, the farms are very large and are operated by the tenant system. Usually the owner lives in a near - by town or village and visits the farm only occasionally to direct the work. A hired superintendent lives on the farm and has direct control of it and the supervision of the tenants. The soils in the Delta areas are very fertile, and little commercial fertilizer is used. Average crop yields are higher than in any other area studied. More tillage after planting is given cotton in this area than in the other regions surveyed. This is due largely to the fact that many of the fields are infested with nut-grass, and to control it extra tillage is required. The South Atlantic division is composed of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. In this division eight sur veys were made. The farms are of medium size and are largely oper ated by the tenant system, but under the direct supervision of the own ers. The prevailing system is to furnish each tenant with a mule and 20 or 25 acres of land, the greater part of which is planted to cotton Cotton is the most profitable crop in this area, and one reason for a 1 - horse tenant system is that when each tenant has only a l - horse crop he grows all the cotton he and his family can pick. With a 2-horse crop the tenant could not Increase his cotton acreage because of scarcity of labor for harvesting, so he would necessarily grow other crops, such as corn or oats; consequently a larger percentage of the land is cultivated in cotton by the l-horse tenant system, with a relatively larger return for the landowner. Book Corn and Corn Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Corn and Corn Growing Classic Reprint written by Henry Agard Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn and Corn-Growing The Atlantic Coast farmers, from 1800 to 1840, made a real effort to get high yielding strains of corn. The farm papers of 1819 to 1822 tell of several instances of getting Maha (undoubtedly Omaha Indian) corn from Council Bluffs - now a part of Iowa. This corn was an eight-row soft corn type, and several of the eastern farmers claimed yields of more than 100 bushels to the acre. The Sioux yellow, ten to twelve-row flint corn was introduced from the west by several grow ers, and there were several introductions of a Canadian flint corn. These introductions, together with the local varieties, are probably found to some extent in all of our present-day varieties, and help to explain the heterogeneous nature of our present-day types. The Iowa State Agricultural Society report of 1858 says: A great. Many varieties of corn are cultivated, and it would be hard to tell which is the best, as farmers entertain different Opinions. Most of the varieties were dents, according to the report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm and Garden Crops, and How to Grow Them for Profit We are very particular in our seed, as we plant seed only of the greatest possible germinating power, and of vitality to produce the strongest plants. We breed our seeds, and in corn we breed for two objects - one for the greatest amount of protein and corn oil, the other for starch and corn oil. For the greatest amount of protein and corn oil we breed and grow our Improved Yellow, Early Rose and Boone County White. For the starch and corn oil we breed our Snow Flake White. We allow our corn to get ripe before we pick our seed. Our men unload their corn on tables which are made for that purpose; from these tables the seed corn is hand - picked by competent men under our observation, only choice being taken. This seed is placed in our dry house where it is dried by dry, warm air of about 70 Fa'hr. Our house is so built as to give the seed the best possible protection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Grow One Hundred Bushels of Corn Per Acre on Worn Soils The pioneer father is sleeping now. 'he sleeps beside the faithful wife who gave him companionship in the days of his toil. He sleeps in the beautiful land made so by the strength, toil and endurance of the pioneer. To the memory of that pioneer father, who loved the soil, this book is dedicated; and as the pioneer fathers subdued the land from the wilderness and gave it to their children, rich in the fertility that Nature gave it, may the children so farm and treat it that that fertility may in crease and not decrease as the years go by. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Corn-Belt Farming System Which Saves Harvest Labor by Hogging Down Crops Labor is the most difficult problem to meet on the average corn belt farm. This condition is growing worse instead of better and will probably make it necessary to reorganize a large number of farms in that section. Unless systems of farming are adopted that will eliminate a part of the work required at rush seasons, it means cutting down the acreage that each farmer can handle and the net income as well. Book Corn Growing

Download or read book Corn Growing written by Aretas W. Nolan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn Growing: A Manual for Corn Clubs With our changing social conditions, new duties, formerly delegated to the home, have been thrust upon the school. This has led to the introduction of some real life subjects into the curriculum, among them agriculture. It is not possible, however, to get the desired results in teaching agriculture by using the same methods used in teaching other subjects. The teacher who attempts to teach agriculture alone and unaided in the schoolroom has not only shouldered a heavy burden but is not making the most of an opportunity. The business of the school is to help to develop men and women of the right sort, not merely to teach boys and girls reading, writing, and arithmetic. If agri culture is to justify its place in the curriculum, it must contribute something more than mere facts.
