Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Talks on Farm Engineering: A Simple Explanation of Many Everyday Problems in Farm Engineering and Farm Mechanics Written in a Readable Style for the Practical Farmer The information set forth in this little vol ume is gleaned from the experience of a number of years spent in advising and aiding farmers in these matters, and is largely an outgrowth of the material I have printed in the Rural new-yorker in reply to hundreds of questions from its readers in all portions of America. In a few cases the talk is based on articles contributed by me to prominent farm journals of both the United States and Canada, such as Hoard's Dairyman, The Field Illustrated, American Cultivator, Northwestern Agriculturist. Book Ultimate Guide to Farm Mechanics

Download or read book Ultimate Guide to Farm Mechanics written by Fred D. Crawshaw and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reference and instruction guide to the mechanics of working the land. The Ultimate Guide to Farm Mechanics combines three classic farming texts for the first time, compiling knowledge from the best sources published as far back as 1884. A comprehensive reference book that belongs in any farming household today, it offers an array of farm knowledge for both experts and amateurs alike. The book is divided into three parts: the first covers general skills such as woodworking and blacksmithing, the second is dedicated to farm engines and how to run them, and the third teaches readers how to construct classic labor-saving devices such as an effective milking stool, plowing gear for a kicking mule, and a nest for egg-eating hens. Readers are taught to mend broken tools, make fertilizer and corn fodder, buy engine parts, and manage gasoline engines safely and economically. Filled with intricate illustrations, photos, and diagrams, Ultimate Guide to Farm Mechanics offers a wealth of knowledge still indispensable to the modern-day farmer. Both the casual and amateur reader will learn valuable lessons from the old teachers of early twentieth-century farming in the United States.

Book Agricultural Engineering Soil Mechanics

Download or read book Agricultural Engineering Soil Mechanics written by E. McKyes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to classical soil mechanics and foundation engineering, and applies these principles to agricultural engineering situations. Theoretical design formulae are given, plus tables and graphs dealing with bearing capacity factors, wall pressure factors, soil cutting numbers and soil mechanical properties. Many example problems of design and analysis are solved in the text, and there are unsolved problems given for each chapter. The text begins with descriptions of soil origins and classification systems, including agricultural classification schemes, and then introduces classical concepts of soil strength and strength measurement techniques in the laboratory and in the field. Soil mechanics is applied to the design of shallow foundations, and the design formulae as well as tables of bearing capacity factors for design use are provided. New research and design findings in the specialized area of tall and heavy farm silos are also given, in addition to deep pile foundation design for heavy structures on very soft soils. Water flow in soils is treated, together with stability of ditch bank slopes and small earth dams, design of retaining walls and pressure pressures in bins and silos, soil erosion and protection methods, soil cutting and tillage design methods, soil compaction analysis, the use of geotextiles and problems of soil freezing. The book is directed primarily at professional university students in Agricultural Engineering, but will also be of interest to scientists working in other engineering branches, landscape architecture, soil physics and the like.

Download or read book Farm Mechanics written by Fred D. Crawshaw and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential agricultural text originally published in 1922, Farm Mechanics is exactly that: a detailed but easy-to-understand manual outlining all the important aspects of working the land. The guide is broken up into sections that cover every aspect of farm work, from woodworking and cement-laying to farm machinery repair. Informative and easy to understand, with close to five hundred illustrations and photographs, Farm Mechanics is both a historical reference for those interested in the history of agriculture and a commonsense tool that outlines essential agricultural skills. For those who want to know more about the golden days of farming, there are plenty of details here to paint a vivid picture of early-twentieth-century farming in the United States, accompanied by detailed photos and illustrations of farm equipment and practices in action. But this isn’t just a book of theoretical practices for curious historians either—while some of the skills explained here might admittedly seem inapplicable for modern use (due to advances in technology most farmers aren’t taking the time to learn blacksmithing, for instance), other sections, like cement and concrete or rope and harness work for farm animals, contain tools and advice that are still indispensable to the modern-day farmer.
