Book Farm Stress and the Production of Rural Sacrifice Zones

Download or read book Farm Stress and the Production of Rural Sacrifice Zones written by Bradi Heaberlin and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, farmer suicides have made the news as a slow-brewing farm crisis resonates across the rural U.S. with widely varying claims about the cause. Using a suite of qualitative and quantitative methods, I juxtapose data from a farmer-oriented crisis hotline in Nebraska, the Nebraska Rural Response hotline, alongside semi-structured interviews with people working in organizations that respond to the current epidemic of farm stress. Taking these sources of data together, I find that farmers, ranchers, and members of farming communities most frequently seek help for economic distress, and the most common psychiatric diagnosis assigned to hotline callers who seek therapeutic support is connected to both acute external events in rural life and high rates of suicide. I identify a "crisis belt" of high call volume in the Sandhills region of Nebraska and connect this geospatial finding to processes of economic restructuring in that region. My findings support the claim that the current resources available to farmers in distress target individual farmers' responses to stress but do not address its causes, which can be understood in terms of economic restructuring and consequent adverse changes in the social fabric of rural communities. The mental health paradigm for farm-related distress constrains the possibilities for addressing it, and I argue that considering this distress in terms of the production of rural sacrifice zones encourages collective agency and systemic solutions to the root causes of farm-related distress.

Download or read book Crisis in the American Heartland written by George W. Doherty and published by Loving Healing Press. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who will step up to meet the challenge of the next rural crisis? Rural practice presents important yet challenging issues for psychology, especially givenuneven population distribution, high levels of need, limited availability of rural services, and ongoing migration to urban centers. It is critical that mental health professionals andfirst responders in rural areas become aware of recent research, training and approachesto crisis intervention, traumatology, compassion fatigue, disaster mental health, critical incidentstress management, post-traumatic stress and related areas in rural environments.Critical issues facing rural areas include: Physical issues such as land, air, and water resources, cheap food policy, chemicalsand pesticides, animal rights, corruption in food marketing and distribution, and landappropriation for energy development.Quality of life issues such as rural America's declining share of national wealth, problems ofhunger, education, and rural poverty among rural populations of farmers and ranchers.Direct service issues include the need to accommodate a wide variety of mental healthdifficulties, client privacy and boundaries, and practical challenges.Indirect service issues include the greater need for diverse professional activities, collaborativework with professionals having different orientations and beliefs, program developmentand evaluation, and conducting research with few mentors or peer collaborators.Professional training and development issues include lack of specialized relevantcourses and placements.Personal issues include limited opportunities for recreation, culture, and lack of privacy. Doherty's first volume in this new series "Crisis in the American Heartland" explores theseand many other issues.Social Science: Disasters & Disaster Relief For more information please visit www.RMRInstitute.org

Book Beyond The Amber Waves Of Grain

Download or read book Beyond The Amber Waves Of Grain written by Paul Lasley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the large-scale impacts of economic restructuring in the Midwest in response to the 1980s farm crisis. Drawing upon detailed surveys from twelve north-central states, the authors offer a comprehensive view of farm restructuring and its social, economic, and political consequences. The study goes beyond the farm gate to look at the broader implications of those changes for agriculture policy, related industries, and areas still dependent upon farming, contributing to the literature on economic restructuring. Like the factory closings in the Rust Belt, the dramatic failure of agricultural industries in the Farm Belt has caused fundamental changes in the organization and control of production. The impact of job losses and economic depression and the shattering of a way of life have shaken public complacency about the stability of many fundamental American myths. Beyond the Amber Waves of Grain looks at the farm crisis not as a purely agricultural, nonurban issue but as one that adds to our understanding of the overall social impacts of economic change. The book takes up the story of Midwestern farm enterprises in the wake of the farm crisis of the 1980s. Using data drawn from detailed surveys of 3,940 farm households in twelve north-central states, the authors offer a comprehensive view of the social and economic restructuring of agriculture and explore the consequences for farm enterprises, farm households, and farming communities. The study goes beyond the farm gate to look at the broader implications for related industries and communities dependent upon farming, for agricultural and rural policies, and for farm women and men, contributing to the literature on economic restructuring and its outcomes.
