Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Farm Boys and Girls' is a book that discusses parenting children who are raised in farming or rural environments. As the author puts it: "In the preparation of this book I have had in mind two classes of readers; namely, the rural parents and the many persons who are interested in carrying forward the rural work discussed in the several chapters. It has been my aim to give as much specific aid and direction as possible. The first two chapters constitute a mere outline of some of the fundamental principles of child development. It would be fortunate if the reader who is unfamiliar with such principles could have a course of reading in the volumes that treat them extensively. Nearly every suggestion given in the main body of the book is based on what has already either been undertaken with a degree of success or planned for in some rural community."

Book The Story of Georgia for Georgia Boys and Girls Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Georgia for Georgia Boys and Girls Classic Reprint written by Katharine B. Massey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Georgia for Georgia Boys and Girls If we travel all over this great state of ours, we shall see cities, towns, villages, and cultivated farm lands. The rivers and streams turn the wheels of busy mills, and there are signs of life everywhere. But it was not always like this. Years ago, before white people settled in this country, and even long after, dense forests covered the mountains, hillsides, and valleys, and the level lands in the south. Numerous tribes of Indians lived under the tall trees and on the banks of the streams. The most powerful of these tribes were the Cherokees, who occupied the northern part of the state among the mountains, and the Creeks, who lived farther to the south. They were a tall, straight, and strong people, generous and good-natured. They were brave in battle, kind to strangers, and never forgetful of a favor, though very resentful when injured. They loved their people and their homes, and were especially kind to the aged. It was their belief that a person gained more wisdom the longer he lived, and they greatly reverenced a wise man. One of the first lessons which the little Indian boy learned was that of respect for old age. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[...]“Should I give the child everything he cries for, or withhold the desired object until he quits?” asks an anxious parent. Neither rule is necessarily the right one, and yet both, on occasions, may be correct. Suppose, instead of the infant you have a five-year-old boy who cries for a loaded revolver he happens to see in your hand. Would you give it to him to stop his crying, or withhold it? Suppose again he should cry for the return of his own plaything which some one unjustly snatched from him. Would you return his plaything to stop his crying, or let him cry it out? Now, here is implied the correct answer in dealing with the outburst of anger in the infant. It is all a matter of justice and fairness. If some agency, human or otherwise, snatches his food from his mouth, and the child squalls for its return, indulge the infant at once. If he has been well fed, comfortably clad and bathed, and under every proper consideration should lie still and behave himself, then do not run and take him up because he happens to be[...]".

Book The Quaker Boy on the Farm and at School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Quaker Boy on the Farm and at School Classic Reprint written by Isaac Sharpless and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quaker Boy on the Farm and at School Within it wandered immense numbers of deer and not a few elk. The only animals of prey were the small wolf and the black bear, neither dangerous under ordinary conditions. The marshes abounded in waterfowl, and at certain seasons wild pigeons and other migratory birds could be captured in abundance by throwing stones into the flocks. There were turkeys, pheasants, and partridges. Shad and other sea-fish were plentiful in the river, and the little streams were amply stocked with trout. Nor were the settlers unworthy of their possessions. A few men of rank and education began a life of trade in the towns, burying their coats of arms as unworthy a Christian democracy. But the greater part were British yeomen, some landowners in their native country, the most of them renters who had loaded all their furniture, plate, clothing, and in some cases framed houses, into the little sailing vessels, and set out on the two or three months' voyage to the free land which the foresight and generosity of William Penn had secured. They had shown their capacity to suffer by lying months and years in British dungeons for a point of conscience, small perhaps, but which, because it was conscience, they had persisted in thinking was worth more to them than property or liberty or life. They had shown their fraternity by offering themselves - man for man and woman for woman - for their unfortunate brethren who were about to die for conscience' sake in the horrible pest-holes of England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, farm families have shared work and equipment with their neighbours to complete labour-intensive, time-sensitive, and time-consuming tasks. They benefitted materially and socially from these voluntary, flexible, loosely structured networks of reciprocal assistance, making neighbourliness a vital but overlooked aspect of agricultural change. Being Neighbours takes us into the heart of neighbourhood – the set of people near and surrounding the family – through an examination of work bees in southern Ontario from 1830 to 1960. The bee was a special event where people gathered to work on a neighbour’s farm like bees in a hive for a wide variety of purposes, including barn raising, logging, threshing, quilting, turkey plucking, and apple paring. Drawing on the diaries of over one hundred men and women, Catharine Wilson takes readers into families’ daily lives, the intricacies of their labour exchange, and their workways, feasts, and hospitality. Through the prism of the bee and a close reading of the diaries, she uncovers the subtle social politics of mutual dependency, the expectations neighbours had of each other, and their ways of managing conflict and crisis. This book adds to the literature on cooperative work that focuses on evaluating its economic efficiency and complicates histories of capitalism that place communal values at odds with market orientation. Beautifully written, engaging, and richly detailed and illustrated, Being Neighbours reveals the visceral textures of rural life.
