Book excerpt: Lush, colorful flowers. Fresh, cool streams and lakes. An abundance of creatures, from gentle bears to tiny birds. Enter the Garden of Eden in this account of God's culminating creation, Adam. As Adam draws his first breath, we are endowed with a renewed awareness of God's love and with appreciation for the magnificence of the world in which he has placed us. As Adam is filled with joy and peace, in pure relationship with God, our sense of wonder is reinvigorated or perhaps awakened for the first time. In this expansion of the Genesis story, author Ron Middleton brings to life the very human struggles of Adam and Eve. Loneliness, curiosity, free will, temptation, the longing for connection and family all are part of our human experience, and we have the choice to respond recklessly or wisely. Through descriptive language and storytelling, we become privy to Eve's dilemma as she tries to sort out the conflicting messages from the serpent, from God, and from her beloved Adam. Like us, she finds that the will of God can be obscured by temptation disguised as confusion. This is a story about what was and what could have been, but it does not end there. It is also a love story between God and Adam, Adam and Eve, and ultimately, God and his people. As we gain more insight into what happened in the Garden, our understanding of God's love for us is deepened.

Book excerpt: Everyone thought Georgiana Highett was invincible. As one of the most prominent members of Edenbridge's upper class, her place as a sophistcated, educated woman of high society makes her a rare person of influence and privilege. Yet, the cracks in her fortress begin to show after the death of her father and new figures enterthe landscape of her life. She is especially rocked by the entrance of Darrel Fredericks, a man who takes a keen interest in her, but whose unknown past maskes him an enigma; and Stephen Lockhart, an old childhood friend who suddenly returns with a renewed hope that Georgiana dares not trust. Not all is at seems, as revelations and reversals throw Georgiana off balance and reshape her entire worldview. She will need her sharp mind and vulnerable heart to confront the storms that threaten her previously innocent world. Based on Mahonri Stewart's Kennedy Center national award-winning play! "FAREWELL TO EDEN is brilliant."- Sharon Haddock, Deseret News"Mahonri Stewart; remember that name . . . a tremendous debut."- Eric Samuelsen, Irreantum Magazine

Book Farewell Babylon

Download or read book Farewell Babylon written by Naïm Kattan and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Farewell, Babylon," Naim Kattan takes readers into the heart of exotic mid-19th-century Baghdad's then-teeming Jewish community. Jews had lived in Iraq for 25 centuries, long before the time of Christ or Muhammad, but anti-Semitism and nationalism were on the rise. In this beautifully written memoir, a young boy comes of age and describes his discoveries -- of work, literature, patriotism, the joys of lazy Sundays swimming in the Tigris. He also talks eloquently of his greatest discovery: women and love. This is a story of roots and exile, of thirst for life and life's experiences. However, more than that it is a tribute to a lost world, an ancient Eastern city in which Iraq's Kurds, Bedouins, Sunnis, Shiites, Chaldeans, Catholics, and Jews all lived together in a rough, rewarding sort of harmony.

Book Memories of Eden

Download or read book Memories of Eden written by Violette Shamash and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to legend, the Garden of Eden was located in Iraq, and for millennia, Jews resided peacefully in metropolitan Baghdad. Memories of Eden: A Journey Through Jewish Baghdad reconstructs the last years of the oldest Jewish Diaspora community in the world through the recollections of Violette Shamash, a Jewish woman who was born in Baghdad in 1912, sent to her daughter Mira Rocca and son-in-law, the British journalist Tony Rocca. The result is a deeply textured memoir—an intimate portrait of an individual life, yet revealing of the complex dynamics of the Middle East in the twentieth century. Toward the end of her long life, Violette Shamash began writing letters, notes, and essays and sending them to the Roccas. The resulting book begins near the end of Ottoman rule and runs through the British Mandate, the emergence of an independent Iraq, and the start of dictatorial government. Shamash clearly loved the world in which she grew up but is altogether honest in her depiction of the transformation of attitudes toward Baghdad’s Jewish population. Shamash’s world is finally shattered by the Farhud, the name given to the massacre of hundreds of Iraqi Jews over three days in 1941. An event that has received very slight historical coverage, the Farhud is further described and placed in context in a concluding essay by Tony Rocca.

Book excerpt: When it comes to movie reviews, critic Violet Epps is a powerhouse voice. But that’s only because she’s learned to channel her literary hero Dorothy Parker, the most celebrated and scathing wit of the twentieth century. If only Violet could summon that kind of strength in her personal life. Violet visits the Algonquin Hotel in an attempt to find inspiration from the hallowed dining room where Dorothy Parker and so many other famous writers of the 1920s traded barbs, but she gets more than she bargained for when Parker’s feisty spirit rematerializes. An irreverent ghost with problems of her own—including a refusal to cross over to the afterlife—Mrs. Parker helps Violet face her fears, becoming in turn mentor and tormentor…and ultimately, friend.
