Book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised

Download or read book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised written by Colleen Barnett and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

Book Unusual Attitudes

Download or read book Unusual Attitudes written by Edwin D. Armbruster and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Captain Ed" (Edwin D. Armbruster) lived a fascinating life as he flew thousands of hours over the jungles of Panama and the Caribbean in single engine planes. Over seven hundred students called him their instructor as he piloted them from Atlantic to Pacific over and along the Panama Canal, through Panama, Central and South America. Beginning with the halcyon days of Canal Zone life and navigating more troubled times as the drug wars escalated, adventure calls on every page. As exciting and spell-binding as the tropical background is beautiful, "Captain Ed" regales and inspires with his stories of crashes and near-misses, student antics, hair-raising escapes and unusual friendships, all as the glory days of the Panama Canal slowly faded into memory. For those who fly and those who long to fly --- this book soars with adventure.

Book A SAIL ABOARD WALKABOUT

Download or read book A SAIL ABOARD WALKABOUT written by ALAN LONG and published by Alan Long. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I couldn’t decide on the direction I wanted to take these memories that would be the most fulfilling. ‘How To’ books are all over the place, and boating is just like fishing or whatever, no matter what you think you know...someone else knows more and better...and it’s true, they do! Maybe make it a novel? No, I’m not that good at making things up. I decided to make it an adventure type of autobiography story/novel with some sex thrown in because everyone told me ‘sex sells’...the feelings and emotions were real...not made up, and that’s even better. Whew...glad to have made a decision.

Book The Good Old Days

Download or read book The Good Old Days written by Harold Flagg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, I flew from Fort Lauderdale, FL, to Japan for $28.39 round-trip. Previously, a round-trip from Fort Lauderdale to Turkey cost me $17 and change. On the Turkish flight, a computer glitch wiped out my documentation shortly after I landed in Frankfurt, Germany. To compensate, Delta Air Lines upgraded me to BusinessElite class, featuring free champagne and choice of filet mignon or salmon steak served on a cozy table set with sparkling crystal and the finest silver and china. Most of my caviar lifestyle on a tuna budget has been based on United States Social Security and Bahamas National Insurance payments, having worked many years in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Whats the catch? Basically, it was playing the discount-fare and frequent-flier game to the Nth degree, N as in nothing, in many cases. My best free junkets in senior-friendly skies came via Delta Air Lines frequent flier mileage. My Delta SkyMiles were tallied by such senior-citizen bargains as a Fort Lauderdale- Hawaii round-trip ticket for as little as $440. That alone added some 10,000 FF miles to my account. Signing for a Delta SkyMiles credit card netted 10,000 miles; a switch to MCI telephone service scored another 5,000 or so. An MCI WorldCom/SkyMiles long-distance card is good for five 10 HAROLD FLAGG miles per dollar spent. There is at least one case where a motormouth literally talked his way into a free trip! Investors can rack up major mileage via Delta

Book Hemingway s Key West

Download or read book Hemingway s Key West written by Stuart B. McIver and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only place in the United States that Hemingway could really call home after he started writing was the tropical island of Key West. During his decade here in the 1930s, he acquired his famed macho persona as Papa, the biggest Big Daddy of them all. This vivid portrait of Ernest Hemingway's Key West reveals both Hemingway, the writer, and Hemingway, the macho, hard-drinking sportsman. His Key West years turned out to be his most productive: he finished A Farewell to Arms, started For Whom the Bell Tolls, and wrote several other books, including Green Hills of Africa, Death in the Afternoon, and To Have and Have Not. He also turned out some of his best short stories. There was plenty of time left over for eating, drinking, fighting, fishing, chasing women, and hanging out with his circle of friends (known as "the Mob"). Hemingway spent the last years of his life in Cuba, and it was here he overcame several demons—accidents, failing health, depression—to write The Old Man and the Sea, for which he won both a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize in Literature. Filled with photos (some of which were not available in the first edition), this book also includes a two-hour walking tour of Key West and a tour of Hemingway's favorite Cuban haunts. This edition also includes a record of the author's exploits in Bimini and Cuba. Accompany Hemingway on fishing expeditions in the Gulf Stream and to Cuba and Bimini aboard his custom-built boat, Pilar. A treat for Hemingway fans!

Book Key West

  • Author : Maureen Ogle
  • Publisher : University Press of Florida
  • Release : 2006-07-01
  • ISBN : 0813059534
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Key West written by Maureen Ogle and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ogle captures this island city in all its quirky charm. Her story breezes along in typical Key West fashion--full of gossip and humor, with the jolt of a good cup of Cuban coffee."--Lee Irby, University of South Florida, St. Petersburg Parrotheads, Hemingway aficionados, and sun worshipers view Key West as a tropical paradise, and scores of writers have set tales of mystery and romance on the island. The city's real story--told by Maureen Ogle in this lively and engaging illustrated account--is as fabulous as fiction. In the early 1800s, the city's pioneer founders battled Indians, pirates, and deadly disease and created wealth beyond their imaginations. In the two centuries since, Key West has nurtured tragedy and triumph and has stood at the crossroads of American history. When Florida joined the Confederacy in 1861, Union troops seized control of strategically located Key West and city residents spent four years living under martial law. In the early 1890s, Key West Cubans helped Jose Marti launch the revolution that eventually ended Spain's control of their homeland. A few years later, the battleship Maine steamed out of Key West harbor on its last, tragic voyage. At the turn of the century, Henry Flagler astounded the entire country by building a technological marvel, an overseas railroad from mainland Florida to Key West, more than 100 miles long. In the 1920s and 1930s, painters, rumrunners, and writers (including Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost) discovered Key West. During World War II, the federal government and the military war machine permanently altered the island's landscape. In the second half of the 20th century, bohemians, hippies, gays, and jet-setters began writing a new chapter in Key West's social history. All of these personalities and events are wrapped in Ogle's unique and candid history of the island, an account that will fascinate past and present citizens of the Conch Republic, history buffs who like a well-told tale, and the millions of tourists from all over the world who love this colorful island city. Maureen Ogle is retired from the University of South Alabama.
