Book At the Mercy of Their Clothes

Download or read book At the Mercy of Their Clothes written by Celia Marshik and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of modern fiction, it is the clothes that make the character. Garments embody personal and national histories. They convey wealth, status, aspiration, and morality (or a lack thereof). They suggest where characters have been and where they might be headed, as well as whether or not they are aware of their fate. At the Mercy of Their Clothes explores the agency of fashion in modern literature, its reflection of new relations between people and things, and its embodiment of a rapidly changing society confronted by war and cultural and economic upheaval. In some cases, people need garments to realize themselves. In other cases, the clothes control the person who wears them. Celia Marshik's study combines close readings of modernist and middlebrow works, a history of Britain in the early twentieth century, and the insights of thing theory. She focuses on four distinct categories of modern clothing: the evening gown, the mackintosh, the fancy dress costume, and secondhand attire. In their use of these clothes, we see authors negotiate shifting gender roles, weigh the value of individuality during national conflict, work through mortality, and depict changing class structures. Marshik's dynamic comparisons put Ulysses in conversation with Rebecca, Punch cartoons, articles in Vogue, and letters from consumers, illuminating opinions about specific garments and a widespread anxiety that people were no more than what they wore. Throughout her readings, Marshik emphasizes the persistent animation of clothing—and objectification of individuals—in early-twentieth-century literature and society. She argues that while artists and intellectuals celebrated the ability of modern individuals to remake themselves, a range of literary works and popular publications points to a lingering anxiety about how political, social, and economic conditions continued to constrain the individual.

Book The Grammar of Lithography

Download or read book The Grammar of Lithography written by W. D. Richmond and published by . This book was released on 1880 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First edition published 1878. "Undoubtedly the most importanttextbook of this half-century was Richmond's Grammar which found its first readership amongst the subscribers to a lithographic trade periodical and, after republication in book form, remained in print virtually unaltered as the standard "trade" manual for the next 30 years. Richmond acknowledged the help of four luminaries of the old school, Louis Haghe, Michael Hanhart, William Simpson and Harry Sandars (i.e. W. J. Stannard), and they no doubt helped him to achieve a balanced coverage of traditional and modern workshop approaches as well as enhancing the work's authority." -Bridson/Wakeman p. 129 and D67. Bigmore & Wyman: "Up to the date of the publication of the first edition of this work there had been no hand-book in the English language of the art of lithography that was of any practical use except the English translation of the work of Senefelder himself and the translation by Hullmandel, of the work of M. Raucourt." (II, pp. 256-7) (Charles Wood 160/96).

Book The Dress Diary

Download or read book The Dress Diary written by Kate Strasdin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing and unique portrait of Victorian life as told through the discovery of one woman's textile scrapbook. In 1838, a young woman was given a diary on her wedding day. Collecting snippets of fabric from a range of garments - some her own, others donated by family and friends - she carefully annotated each one, creating a unique record of their lives. Her name was Mrs Anne Sykes. Nearly two hundred years later, the diary fell into the hands of Kate Strasdin, a fashion historian and museum curator. Using her expertise, Strasdin spent the next six years unraveling the secrets contained within the album's pages, and the lives of the people within. Her findings are remarkable. Piece by piece, she charts Anne's journey from the mills of Lancashire to the port of Singapore before tracing her return to England in later years. Fragments of cloth become windows into Victorian life: pirates in Borneo, the complicated etiquette of mourning, poisonous dyes, the British Empire in full swing, rioting over working conditions, and the terrible human cost of Britain's cotton industry. This is life writing that celebrates ordinary people: not the grandees of traditional written histories, but the hidden figures, the participants in everyday life. Through the evidence of waistcoats, ball gowns, and mourning outfits, Strasdin lays bare the whole of human experience in the most intimate of mediums: the clothes we choose to wear.
