Book Phillip Warner Famous Welsh Battles

Download or read book Phillip Warner Famous Welsh Battles written by Phillip Warner and published by Class Warfare. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Welsh are perhaps not widely known for their military history, the story of warfare in Wales spans some three thousand years. In Famous Welsh Battles, Philip Warner gives a detailed account of the major battles in Wales from prehistoric and Roman times up through the Battle of Fishguard in 1797. Whether fighting as mercenaries in the Middle Ages, when they were greatly esteemed and widely feared, or engaging in guerrilla combat on more rugged battlefields, where their best allies were mountains and rivers, the Welsh generals' clear grasp of strategy and tactics served them well in times of war. History reveals that there were no easy victories over the Welsh - as is evidenced by the heroics of such tenacious warriors as Caradoc, the great guerrilla leader who by the year AD 47 was the accepted head of all British tribes; Owen Gwynedd, who twice defeated Henry II, giving Wales a shining example of how unity might be achieved; Owain Glyndwr; the well-known yet mysterious leader thought by many to possess supernatural powers; and Llywelyn the Last, whose call to arms amassed an army of thirty thousand foot soldiers and five hundred knights. Warner also describes how the Welsh at times proved to be their own worst enemies, letting petty rivalries and jealousies weaken their military strength. Complete with Ordnance Survey maps of the battle sites and the surrounding areas, Famous Welsh Battles is an authoritative volume that brings to life the terrain, the people and the epic battles of Wales.

Book The Welsh Wars of Edward I

Download or read book The Welsh Wars of Edward I written by Henry Frowde and published by . This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nation forged on the anvil of war Although the concept of the nation that is now the United Kingdom is so embedded in the contemporary consciousness as to motivate little consideration as to how such an unusual circumstance came into being, it requires little thought to realise that there can be no process by which such a political union can be wrought without much strife and bloodshed, for the very term 'kingdom' denotes singular interest. Perhaps the one man who did more than any other to bring about a unified Great Britain was Edward I. Naturally, he was a single minded and utterly ruthless monarch barely mindful of the loss of life, misery or destruction that was required to achieve his objectives. Edward had a substantial list of political objectives, including the subjugation of the Scots, the recovery of lost dominions on the continent, the return of powers signed away in Magna Carta and, high among them, the bringing to account and control of the Welsh. In Wales were a people who stood apart in every way from those who held power in England. Yet these troublesome people lived behind a long border which looked towards the nearby English heartland. The border-land was ever in turmoil and the situation could not be allowed to endure. Edward posted his most resilient men to a string of fortifications to hold the Welsh at bay, and also began a systematic campaign to subjugate them. Edward was, of course, singularly successful in his strategy and tactics and the history of these 13th century wars of domination makes fascinating reading for all those interested in mediaeval history. Frowde's book is a well regarded classic on the subject and is recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Welsh Wars of Edward I: A Contribution to Medieval Military History, Based on Original Documents I have nowhere found a satisfactory detailed account Of these campaigns, for the chroniclers write so vaguely that they are most misleading unless compared with each other and with the documents. It is only after close research that I venture to Offer this contribution to mediaeval military history. Lastly, I have to apologize, if one ought to apologize for anything done deliberately, for repeating in many cases the exact words which have been used in a previous chapter, for I have often, in reading some book, felt annoyed at having to turn back for informa tion. Book excerpt: British Battles 493–937 deals with thirteen conflicts, either locating them correctly or explaining some of their aspects which have puzzled historians. They include the following: Mount Badon (493) at Braydon, Wiltshire; battles of the British hero Arthur (the legendary 'King Arthur') (536–7) in southern Scotland or the borders; 'Degsastan' (603) at Dawyck, on the River Tweed, Scotland; Maserfelth (642) at Forden, on the Welsh border; the Viking victory of 'Alluthèlia' (844) at Bishop Auckland, near Durham; and the English triumph of Brunanburh (937) at Lanchester, also near Durham. British Battles 493–937 is, thus, one of the most revolutionary books ever published on war in Britain and is a valuable resource for battle archeologists and research historians.

The sweeping victory of the Welsh at Cardigan was historic. It not only put the victor, Owain Gwynedd, in a position to rule Wales free of English domination, it also marked the arrival on the battlefields of Europe of a new, deadly and uniquely Welsh weapon: the longbow. This book brings an exciting new look at the Anglo-Welsh Wars.
