Book Celebrity Families

Download or read book Celebrity Families written by Sheila Stewart and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes celebrity families seem to have it all. Whether they're actors, famous athletes, major politicians, or royalty, these families usually have money and a glamorous lifestyle. At least that's the perception. In reality, celebrity families have a lot of the same issues other families have, along with a few others. Celebrity families have to deal with constantly living in the public eye, having their every move studied and judged. The non-famous family members have to live in the shadow of their famous parents, children, or siblings, which can often mean being compared to them or having people pretend to be friends just to get close to those family members. The stories in this book tell about a few of these celebrity families and how fame has affected their lives and the lives of their family members.

Download or read book Monstrosity written by Alexa Wright and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 'Monster of Ravenna' to the 'Elephant Man', Myra Hindley and Ted Bundy, the visualisation of 'real', human monsters has always played a part in how society sees itself. But what is the function of a monster? Why do we need to embody and represent what is monstrous? This book investigates the appearance of the human monster in Western culture, both historically and in our contemporary society. It argues that images of real (rather than fictional) human monsters help us both to identify and to interrogate what constitutes normality; we construct what is acceptable in humanity by depicting what is not quite acceptable. By exploring theories and examples of abnormality, freakishness, madness, otherness and identification, Alexa Wright demonstrates how monstrosity and the monster are social and cultural constructs. However, it soon becomes clear that the social function of the monster – however altered a form it takes – remains constant; it is societal self-defence allowing us to keep perceived monstrosity at a distance. Through engaging with the work of Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva and Canguilhem (to name but a few) Wright scrutinises and critiques the history of a mode of thinking. She reassesses and explodes conventional concepts of identity, obscuring the boundaries between what is 'normal' and what is not.

Keillor writes a prose that can be turned to laughter, to tears…to compassion or satire, to a hundred effects. He is a brilliant parodist.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Book A Very Private Celebrity

Download or read book A Very Private Celebrity written by Hugh Purcell and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Freeman was one of Britain's most extraordinary public figures for over half a century: a renaissance man who constantly reinvented himself; a household name who sought complete anonymity. From advertising executive to war hero to MP tipped to be Prime Minister, Freeman then changed direction to become a seminal television interviewer and editor of the New Statesman. He subsequently remodelled himself yet again to become, in turn, an ambassador, a TV mogul, a university professor and, finally, in retirement, a well-known bowls player in south London. Freeman packed nine lives into his ninety-nine years, but all he really wanted was to be forgotten. The paradox of this private celebrity was captured by the very series that made him famous: Face to Face. While Freeman remorselessly interrogated the stars of his age, he himself sat in the shadows, his back to the camera. He was the grand inquisitor, exposing the personalities behind the public figures - but never his own. For ten years, Hugh Purcell has been tracking Freeman's story, trying to come face to face with this enigma who believed in changing his life - and his wife - every ten years. Why did Freeman want to forget what most old men would be proud to remember? Why did he try to erase himself from history? And yet, despite Freeman's best efforts to be ignored, his death in 2014 was marked by an enormous outpouring of appreciation and admiration. With his life now free from its shroud of inscrutability, the true story of this incredibly multifaceted man can finally be told.

  • Author : Ron Gallo

Download or read book When I Look Up written by Ron Gallo and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christian books have a problem. For they speak from an “adult perspective”, and not a child’s. They leave out, the most important aspect of the foundation when walking with God, and that is the child. They say. do ABCDE, to get a better walk with God. That’s fine, but we forget about the growth of the child and there characteristics, is the Christian life template for an adult to look at and learn from. This is the reason why children come before adults; it’s so we can see who God sees. God doesn’t see us as we see each other as adults, in arrogance. God doesn’t care about your social status, or you can have more degrees than a thermometer, you are his child. God sees adults as tall children. So now let’s look deeper into a child’s life, and how it relates to Gods foundation... the family. Understanding the child, then you will understand yourself, and what God wants from us as adults. Looking at the genesis of a child we can see many attributes and characteristics of a child that God wants to see in us. We can shadow, and be a reflection of “childlike”, not childish as Jesus said in the book of Mathew. Jesus clearly states ‘unless you’re like a child, you shall not enter....’ Right off the bat, Jesus is drawing the line in the sand. Children have many characteristics that we miss as adults, and forget that we went through these same characteristics ourselves. From looking up, having child like faith, being able to be led, humility, believability, no pride or self righteousness etc. This fascinating book being different, will enhance any reader/parent to take a stronger look at their own Christian life, and check off the boxes to see if there in alignment with Gods standards. There a chapter on being blind when your awake, yet we trust him in sleep, and other great gems of wisdom.

Book Methamphetamine Use

  • Author : Sandra B. McPherson
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2003-06-26
  • ISBN : 0203503783
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Methamphetamine Use written by Sandra B. McPherson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man is accused of attempted murder of a former crystal meth addict. He claims he shot in self-defense, responding to the extremely aggressive behavior the victim was exhibiting. How will this play out in court? Most likely, the prosecution and the defense will call various expert witnesses - perhaps neurologists, psychologists, pathologists - each with testimonies based on their own theoretical viewpoints, but none with a truly comprehensive knowledge of the background and effects of methamphetamine (MA) use. This will cause confusion, complexity, and their testimonies may not comply with Daubert standards. Written by a multidisciplinary team of experts, Methaphetamine Use: Clinical and Forensic Aspects examines MA use and abuse from clinical, forensic, and criminal justice perspectives. It is the first to cover virtually every aspect, reviewing the history, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, treatment, and evidentiary value of MA and its use. It addresses Daubert considerations and victim/witness credibility, competency to confess and to stand trial, criminal responsibility, extreme emotion as mitigation to murder, and dangerousness. It also details statutes and case law to represent perspectives of both the prosecution and the defense. Growing in popularity more than any other illegal drug, methamphetamine has been shown to produce a paranoid psychotic state, which may recur months or years after use. Methamphetamine Use: Clinical and Forensic Aspects provides a comprehensive, critical survey of the current knowledge and policies regarding the use and abuse of this dangerous and ubiquitous substance.
