Book Famous American Statesmen Orators Past and Present Vol 2 of 6

Download or read book Famous American Statesmen Orators Past and Present Vol 2 of 6 written by Alexander K. McClure and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 2 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations Hamilton's career is one of great interest to those who seek to study intelligently the beginnings of the nation. A man of great personal force and of strong aristocratic feeling, he represented the principle of authority, of government framed and adminis tered by the few for the benefit of the many. In a series of papers Hamilton had exposed the inherent defects of the existing Confederation, and it is now generally acknowledged that the first suggestion toward the establishment of an adequate Federal Government came from him. Although the particular plan proposed by Hamilton in the Federal Convention, which met at Philadelphia in 1787, was laid aside, yet it was the spirit of the system conceived by him which then and there prevailed, and has since been a controlling principle in the administration of the Federal Government. Guizot has said of him that there is not in the Constitution of the United States an element of order, of force, and of duration, which he did not powerfully contribute to inject into it and cause to predominate. While it was still uncertain whether the Constitution would be adopted by the several State conventions, Hamilton, in conjunction with James Madison and John Jay, wrote, as has been said, The Federalist, to recommend the proposed national organic law as the best obtainable under the circumstances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 6 of 6: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations God did not make the American people the mightiest human force Of all time simply to feed and die. He did not give our race the brain Of organization and heart of domination to no purpose and no end. No; he has given us a task equal to our talents. He has appointed for us a destiny equal to our endowments. He has made us the lords Of civilization that we may administer civilization. Such administration is needed in Cuba. Such administration is needed in the Philip pines. And Cuba and the Philippines are in our hands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations Oratory, said Abraham Lincoln, s the great power that moves nations to do and dare; it was oratory that wrecked Rome and made Christianity live. None of our public men better understand the power of oratory than did Lincoln, and he esti mated it from its highest plane. He would not have been a great orator in Rome when Roman people were swayed by the impassioned eloquence of their orators to deify to-day and crucify to-morrow, but he was one Of the greatest Of American orators of the rare type that always appeals to the considerate judgment Of mankind. The power Of the impassioned oratory that swayed the ancients in the days of Demosthenes has been impaired by the growing in culture and thoughtful ness Of the people Of all nations. There are occa sions when it is yet most appropriate and impressive, but they are rare. It at times asserts itself In great trials in our courts of justice, but its impressions speedily perish, unless they appeal to some enduring human sympathy. Senator Depew truthfully says, Eloquence is the master element in politics, but political oratory in this country, like the political oratory Of every other civilized country Of the world, has materially changed in its most effective attributes. In the days Of Thomas Corwin Of Ohio, and Sargent S. Prentiss of Mississippi, the political orator was the sole dependence of political parties. The news paper was then a luxury and did not reach the masses of the people. The hustlings was, therefore. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1873, Amos Jay Cummings, a decorated Civil War veteran and journalist for the New York Sun newspaper, set out on a westward journey aboard the newly completed transcontinental railroad. For some time, miners, settlers, and entrepreneurs had already been heading west to make their fortunes, and Cummings made the trip in part to see what all the fuss was about. During his six-month expedition from Kansas to California, Cummings sent extraordinary and engaging accounts of the American West back to his readers in New York. Collected in this volume for the first time are Cummings's portraits of a land and its assortment of characters unlike anything back East. Characters like Pedro Armijo, the New Mexican sheep tycoon who took Denver by storm, and more prominently the Mormon prophet Brigham Young and one of his wives, Ann Eliza Young, who was filing for divorce at the time of Cummings's arrival. Although today he is virtually unknown, during his lifetime Cummings was one of the most famous newspapermen in the United States, in part because of stories like these. Complete with a biographical sketch and historical introduction, A Remarkable Curiosity is an enjoyable read for anybody interested in the American West in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
