Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Men and Women There is an irresistible attraction in reading the lives of celebrated people which enchains the hearts of young and old alike. The study of individual character as represented by men and women whose names are graven on the imperishable tablets of Fame, is not only fascinating but instructive. Strange as it may seem we know less of living celebrities, who by thought and action are now molding the destiny of the nation, than we do of the immortal dead whose epitaphs are written in the sacred archives of history. This work is a record of noted Americans now living, and of the important events they have created. It contains the portraits of famous persons whose names are prominent in the annals of the times. Each portrait is reproduced from a recent photograph, and is accompanied by a biographical sketch obtained in nearly all cases by personal interview. The work is therefore of untold value as a text book of national character, an authentic account of modern progress and development, and the influence of master minds upon American history. Hon. Benjamin Harrison, Ex-President of the United States, has said: "If we would strengthen our country, we should cultivate a love for it in our hearts and in the hearts of our children and neighbors; and this love for civil institutions, for a land, for a flag, if they are worthy and great and have a glorious history, is widened and deepened by a fuller knowledge of them." Biography is not alone the history of individuals, it is the history of a Nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book One Hundred Famous Americans Classic Reprint

Download or read book One Hundred Famous Americans Classic Reprint written by Helen Ainslie Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Famous Americans To present a series of brief and interesting sketches of some of the greatest men and women of America - to group them by the callings in which their most important work has been done, to describe the events of their lives; to tell what they have been to their companions, to their professions, and to the great interests of their nation and the world at large - setting forth from different standpoints their influence upon their own times and the future. The endeavor has been to tell the stories of these great lives fairly and truthfully, omitting for the most part all anecdotes and purely personal matters, while making clear the distinguishing traits of each individual, not only as an individual, but also as a successful follower of his or her vocation. In this way some idea has also been given, it is hoped, of the most notable achievements in the history of the various professions here represented. It is not claimed that this selection forms a perfect list of our greatest men and women: many names having been omitted that rank with those given; but even in the wide difference of Opinion existing upon the merits of fame, it is believed that the characters herein described will be found to be a fair representation of those who have had the strongest influence upon our history. The compiler has been much aided in mak ing the selection by the advice - most generously bestowed - of several authors. Book Famous Americans

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Americans: Of Recent Times Yet it came about in the most natural way. We catch our first glimpse of the boy when he sat in a little log school-house, without windows or floor, one of a humming score of shoeless boys, where a good-natured, irritable, drinking English school master taught him to read, write, and cipher as far as Practice. This was the only school he ever attended, and that was all he learned at it. His widowed mother, with her seven young chil dren, her little farm, and two or three slaves, could do no more for him. Next, we see him a tall, awkward, slender stripling of thirteen, still barefoot, clad in homespun butternut of his mother's making, tilling her fields, and going to mill with his bag Of corn strapped upon the family pony: At fourteen, in the year 1791, a place was found for him in a Richmond drug-store, where he served as errand-boy and youngest clerk for one year. Book America s Great Men and Their Deeds

Download or read book America s Great Men and Their Deeds written by William A. Mowry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Great Men and Their Deeds: American Heroes and Heroism "Interest" is the first word in modern psychology. The child will learn faster and better when he is "interested," when his mind is thoroughly alive and intensely active. Moreover, when he is kept in pleasurable interest his development is more normal and healthy. Nowhere is this principle more applicable or the results more manifest than in the reading-classes. Give the children dry and uninteresting historical facts or didactic rules of no interest to them and quite foreign to their undeveloped natures, and you have given them a soporific potion which will prove effectual in retarding their advancement. On the other hand, give them reading-lessons which relate, in simple language, adventures, narrow escapes, thrilling incidents in history and travel, where bold and high-toned courage is manifested, and three distinct and important things will be accomplished: first, their thorough interest in the reading exercise will be secured; secondly, a healthy love for history will be cultivated; and thirdly, a strong moral sentiment will be stimulated. Perhaps no set of reading-lessons will do more in all three of these directions than such entertaining incidents in history as show real bravery and high-principled heroism. One advantage from a book of this sort is found in the ethical lessons conveyed by the incidents related. It is in reality a practical book of morals. The best moral teaching is by example, and the stories here told impart so clearly lessons in kindness, in honesty, in true courage, in real benevolence, that the words haec fabula docet are in no way needed. Children always and everywhere respect heroism and love the hero. But it is important to distinguish between brute bravery and real moral courage. The incidents of heroism given in this book are arranged in a progressive or ascending order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Manners in America My next occupation was to look over my letters of introduction. Of these I found above thirty addressed to New York, and being by no means anxious to become involved in so wide a vortex of acquaintance, I request ed one of my American fellow-passengers to select such, as, from his local knowledge, he imagined might prove of more immediate service to a traveller like myself. In consequence of this arrangement, about half the let ters with which the kindness of my friends had furnished me, were discarded, and I can truly say, that the very warm and obliging reception I experienced from those to whom I forwarded introductions, left me no room to r ret the voluntary limitation of their number. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Men and Famous Women, Vol. 3: A Series of Pen and Pencil Sketches of the Lives of More Than 200 of the Most Prominent Personages in History Egypt was the mould of the Hebrew nation - the matrix in which a single family, or, at most, a small tribe, grew to a people as numerous as the American people at the time of the Declaration of Independence. For four centuries, ao cording to the Hebrew tradition - a period as long as America has been known to Europe - this growing people, coming a patriarchal family from a roving, pastoral life, had been placed under the dominance of a highly developed and ancient civilization - a civilization symbolized by monuments that rival in en durance the everlasting hills; a civilization so ancient that the Pyramids, as we now know, were hoary with centuries ere Abraham looked on them. No matter how clearly the descendants of the kinsmen who came into Egypt at the invitation of the boy-slave become prime minister, maintained the distino tion of race, and the traditions of a freer life, they must have been powerfully affected by such a civilization; and just as the Hebrews of to-day are Polish in Poland, German in Germany, and American in the United States, so, but far more clearly and strongly, the Hebrews of the Exodus must have been Egyptian.
