Book excerpt: The concepts of the past, centered more narrowly on traditional ways of learning to read and write, no longer suffice in a society that requires higher level skills from an increasingly diverse student population. Providing a new direction in literacy education, the chapters in this volume offer a revitalized perspective of literacy. They focus on the forms that literacy will take in the future, the influence of changing technologies and multimedia on curriculum and instructional practices, and on effective learning environments. These chapters incorporate the insights of researchers in several disciplines to examine ways of helping students develop the broad-based literacy skills they will need in order to participate fully in American society. Teachers, teacher educators, and others concerned with the future of nurturing and schooling will find challenging ideas for redefining instruction in literacy in this book.

Book Child Development and Education in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Child Development and Education in the Twenty First Century written by Priti Joshi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth understanding of how children’s development at different stages of their lives interfaces with the kind of education and support they need at school and home. It examines closely how education, in turn, influences their development and prepares them for an uncertain future. The chapters focus on the rapid developments of the 21st century that are changing the nature of education, especially the shift needed to being able to sift through and meaningfully deal with overwhelming volumes of information now available. This book helps readers understand how children can benefit from the digital environment while avoiding its pitfalls. Keeping in mind that in today’s world parents are getting to spend less time with their children, the authors provide research-backed ideas on how they can best enable children’s development, including their thoughts, feelings and notions of self. Given the increasing disparities, there is a perceptive analysis of how education can build an awareness of equity in a context marked by diversity and disadvantage. This book addresses issues such as these in a reliable, scholarly yet accessible manner, for students, young researchers and lay readers. Consequently, it is a valuable source of fundamental insights and understanding for educators, policy-makers, educational administrators and students of human and child development, education, and teacher training courses.

Book Never Mind the Botox

Download or read book Never Mind the Botox written by Mitch Stansbury and published by M-Y Books Limited. This book was released on 2012-10-14 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We, four suburban forty-somethings, had all but ignored live music, proper live music, for twenty years - The Banshees, Buzzcocks and The Smiths happened so long ago that they might have been in a different life. Live music now was a mum from Doncaster pretending to be the blonde one from Abba, and we needed help. Thankfully, it came, as our children found indie-rock, and demanded to see it up close. A night at Wembley with The Killers kick-started a five year odyssey of seventy nights, a hundred bands, and all of this – Superheroes in spandex, Viking Metallers in a strip-club, cross-dressing sax players, foam-parties, typewriter solos, half-eaten birds, demented babysitters, homicidal ticket-touts, terrifying body-art, the world's laziest roadie, and of course, some dad-dancing. We've met an 80's legend playing drums in a punk covers band, and been stalked by a masked man in a gay night-club. We've been derailed by the Pope, and insulted by a singer who then bought us all a drink, and even, briefly, had rock stars' arse in our hands. Well, in my hands. Fleeting it may have been, but he hasn't called, or even sent a text. Never Mind the Botox is a journey of mild, middle-aged rebellion, as once or twice a month, we try not to stand out in a crowd thirty years younger - we usually fail. Sometimes the children keep us company, others we leave them at home, but there is always, along the way, some fun to be had. And so what if we can't hear the next morning. Old-people need rock'n'roll too.
