Book Family Finances microform a Sociological Study of the Earning Managing and Spending of Money in Marital Relationships

Download or read book Family Finances microform a Sociological Study of the Earning Managing and Spending of Money in Marital Relationships written by Colavecchia, Sandra and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigates the organization of family finances among a sample of married Canadian couples in order to explore the connections between money, power, and gender in marriage. Various aspects of family finances are investigated including earning, banking, the management of money, and spending. In-depth interviews were used to examine economic inequalities in marriage and the social meanings surrounding money. Consistent with grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss, 1967), the findings of the study draw attention to a type of domestic labour that has been largely overlooked in studies of household labour. The study explores the social processes whereby economic inequalities are produced in marital relationships and how the social meanings of money shape money relations in marriage. The relationship between women's economic resources and marital power dynamics are also examined. Directions for future research and implications for social policy in relation to various social and economic policies affecting families are addressed. The study draws on sociological and economic scholarship on money in marriage, specifically previous research on economic inequality in families. The analytical framework of the study incorporates several different theoretical perspectives, including sociological perspectives on the social meanings of money in intimate relationships, and Zelizer's (1989) concept of "special movies". The study also draws on sociological perspectives on gender and marriage, including Komter's (1989) theory of hidden power, and West and Zimmerman's (1987) conceptualization of "doing gender."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many parents today believe that two steady incomes are not only desirable but absolutely necessary in order to raise a family. Yet most full-time working mothers say that if it weren't for the money, they would not work, and instead would stay at home with their children. After the birth of her second child, Denise Topolnicki faced this common dilemma: Continue working full-time, or spend more time with her family? As a former editor of "Money, Denise used her financial expertise and discovered that she could work only part-time "and be at home for her children--while not breaking her family's budget. By combining her investment know-how with compassionate advice, Denise gives parents a clear-cut strategy for controlling their money--from saving on food, to creating a cash reserve, to learning how to retire on less than two incomes. Packed with worksheets, detailed plans, and inspiring case studies, Topolnicki's plan helps families set fun priorities while still balancing the checkbook. Whether you want to leave work altogether or continue part-time, this book" is the key to freedom for millions of families trapped on the working-parent treadmill.

Book Spending of Middle Income Families

Download or read book Spending of Middle Income Families written by Emily H. Huntington and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most previous investigations of family expenditures have dealt either with families of wage earners or with all families without differentiation. This Heller Committee study centers on white-collar families in which the chief breadwinners were employed in salaried occupations with earnings between $4800 and $7500--a group about whose spending habits little has previously been known. The author analyzes the expenditures of 159 San Francisco Bay Area families. The reader will find not only the sums spent for each general category of expenditure but also the kinds of goods purchased; for example, information is included on ownership and rental of homes, purchase of new and second-hand automobiles, and types of household equipment purchased. Similar details will be found for each category of expenditure, and for the use of installment purchasing. In addition, non-consumption expenditures, mainly provisions for insurance and retirement, are set forth in considerable detail. The study also includes a comparison of the economic behavior of these middle-income families with that revealed in a 1950 Bureau of Labor Statistics Bay Area survey of families with lower incomes. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. Book Family Friends Finance

Download or read book Family Friends Finance written by Allison L. McMillan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis examines the effect of varying income levels on the attachment of men and women to friends and their spouse. It is hypothesized in this thesis that family income will impact men and women differently. Additionally, it is hypothesized that the income categories will show different attachment issues among spousal attachments and friendships. Through analysis of data collected in the year 2000, contained in the The Marital Instability Over the Life Course Study wave 6, part one of a two-part series entitled Work and Family Life Study, I examine the relationship between family income and attachment in both men and women, and explore the implications of these patterns for the individuals. The results show that individuals in different income brackets are prone to different marital and friendship troubles. Further, the data shows men and women within the same income bracket can display differences in how income impacts their friendships and marriage. This thesis serves as a first step to identify the impact of income on individual relationships and highlights multiple correlates which deserve more in-depth analysis in the future."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book An Economic Analysis of the Family

Download or read book An Economic Analysis of the Family written by John F. Ermisch and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do economists have to say about behavior within the context of the family? This book improves our understanding of how families and markets interact, why important aspects of families have been changing in recent decades, and how families respond to, and are affected by, public policy. It covers a broader range of topics with more consistency than have previous studies, including all major theoretical developments in the field over the past decade. John Ermisch builds his analysis on the premise that the standard analytical methods of microeconomics can help us understand resource allocation and the distribution of welfare within the family. Families are dynamic institutions--and so the author uses these same methods to study family formation and dissolution (including marriage, fertility, and divorce) and household formation, as well as intergenerational transfers, household production and investment, and bargaining between family members. He also shows how economic theories of the family can help guide and structure empirical analyses of demographic and related phenomena, such as labor supply, child support, and returns to education. Examples of studies that apply the theory are provided throughout the book. The most comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to an increasingly dynamic area of research, one with important implications for public policy, An Economic Analysis of the Family will be a valuable resource for advanced students of microeconomics and also for students and researchers in sociology, psychology, and other social sciences.
