Book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine

Download or read book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine written by Graham Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.

Book Stigma Discrimination and Living with HIV AIDS

Download or read book Stigma Discrimination and Living with HIV AIDS written by Pranee Liamputtong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up until now, many articles have been written to portray stigma and discrimination which occur with people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in many parts of the world. But this is the first book which attempts to put together results from empirical research relating to stigma, discrimination and living with HIV/AIDS. The focus of this book is on issues relevant to stigma and discrimination which have occurred to individuals and groups in different parts of the globe, as well as how these individuals and groups attempt to deal with HIV/AIDS. The book comprises chapters written by researchers who carry out their projects in different parts of the world and each chapter contains empirical information based on real life situations. This can be used as an evidence for health care providers to implement socially and culturally appropriate services to assist individuals and groups who are living with HIV/AIDS in many societies. The book is of interest to health care providers who have their interests in working with individuals and groups who are living with HIV/AIDS from a cross-cultural perspective. It will be useful for students and lecturers in courses such as anthropology, sociology, social work, nursing, public health and medicine. In particular, it will assist health workers in community health centres and hospitals in understanding issues related to HIV/AIDS and hence provide culturally sensitive health care to people living with HIV/AIDS from different social and cultural backgrounds. The book is useful for anyone who is interested in HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in diverse social and cultural settings.

Book Caring for People with HIV AIDS in Thailand

Download or read book Caring for People with HIV AIDS in Thailand written by Thanaruk Suwanprapisa and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The self-devotion of family members came from the bond of family ties, giving care willingly and through a belief of karma. However, there were strains in caregiving due to time constraints, additional work load, financial stress, emotional stress and social stress and the view that caregiving was an unavoidable task, a duty. Thus, PWHAs were occasionally treated distantly and sometimes were recipients of expressions of disgust from family members. The last theme was that care meant lengthening of life. This meaning of care includes the essentials for long life and support for survival. As an essential for long life, PWHAs received a strength of will and supernatural healing rites to fight their disease. PWHAs also described support they received for survival as: care for promoting and protecting their health, support for their dependence, social care, and support for preparing for dying from family members. The researcher developed a new model of care for PWHAs and their caregivers based on the greater understanding of the patient/carer relationship generated from this study.

Book Family Care in HIV AIDS

Download or read book Family Care in HIV AIDS written by Premilla D'Cruz and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book vividly describes family care in HIV/AIDS through the lived experiences of caregivers and care receivers. It contributes to our knowledge not only because of the contemporary relevance of family caregiving, but also because of its focus on HIV/AIDS which, being a relatively new disease, is little understood yet poses unique challenges due to its stigmatising, long-drawn, debilitating and terminal nature. Based on a study conducted in Mumbai, Family Care in HIV/AIDS captures the lived experiences of 10 caregivers and seven care receivers belonging to diverse socio-economic groups and traditional as well as non-traditional family settings. Overall, the book provides valuable insights into a range of important issues related to caregiving in family settings while identifying areas for intervention and further research. In addition, it overcomes many gaps identified in the substantive area of family care by Western researchers.

Book Suggestions for Addressing Clinical and Non Clinical Issues in Palliative Care

This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from the World Health Organization indicate that about 40 million people worldwide require palliative care each year. We must face this enormous problem with appropriate welfare policies and training of up-to-date and competent personnel. In this context, a book that collects the experiences of authors with diverse backgrounds, and operating in different settings of palliative care, can be added to the many editorial products on the subject. Over five sections, this volume addresses such topics as palliative care in children, infants, and gynecologic oncology patients; the role of the caregiver; the use of drugs; and ethics, organization, and policy issues. Although this book should not be considered as an exhaustive treatise on palliative care, the many topics covered and the experience and competence of the authors involved make it a useful tool for those who are already experts in the field as well as those who are studying this field.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this publication is to disseminate the findings of the report on "Older-age parents and the AIDS epidemic in Thailand:Changing impacts in the era of Antiretroviral Therapy" to assist policymakers addressing similar contextual environments to further understand the epidemic and its impact on elderly caregivers. The report represents one of the few research works on the impact of HIV and AIDS on the lives of persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families in the region. It serves to fill the gap in the dearth of research on the implications of the AIDS epidemic on older aged parents, in particular in the context of the increasing availability of antiretroviral therapy."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the experiences of family caregivers of persons living with HIV/AIDS in two contexts of development - Kerala and Scotland. Although the study was primarily qualitative in nature, it incorporated some quantitative methodology in order to connect the findings to existing literature on stress, coping, and mental health. In-depth interviews were conducted with 23 respondents in Kerala and 5 in Scotland. Interview transcripts were analyzed for major themes, using elements of grounded theory. Quantitative measures included the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1985) and the Self Report Questionnaire (Beusenberg & Orley, 1994). Results were analyzed for differences in coping style and mental health between the settings. Exploratory correlational and regression analyses were also conducted. The results indicated that caregivers from both contexts experienced significant burdens. The major experiences of the caregivers in Kerala consisted of poverty, stigmatization, discrimination, lack of support networks and adequate healthcare facilities. While the caregivers in Scotland shared some of these experiences at a lesser degree, their dominant experiences centred on caregiving stress, limited support, role stress, difficulty finding and maintaining a job, and lack of recognition of carers' needs. Quantitative findings indicated that carers in Scotland used a wider array of coping strategies and were more likely to rely on problem-focused coping than the Kerala respondents. Although the carers in both settings experienced significant indicators of psychological distress, the level of symptoms was higher for the carers in Kerala. Correlational and regression analyses explored relationships among setting, gender, coping, and mental health problems. The findings were discussed in terms of the existing literature related to familycaring in HIV/AIDS, coping, and mental health. Synthesis of the findings led to the emergence of three unifying concepts of struggle, commitment and resilience. A model was proposed that explained the relationship among the three unifying concepts.
