Book The Goddesses Henchmen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rajputs ruled the vast majority of the kingdoms that were joined together after Indian independence to form the state of Rajasthan, "Land of Kings." An important part of Rajput religion is the worship of "heroes" who have died in battle. This practice has attained new significance in recent years, as right-wing Hindu activists have deployed narratives about heroism in Rajput wars with Muslim emperors. In this book, Lindsey Harlan explores the idea of the Rajput hero. She is particularly interested in the role played by gender in stories about heroes and in their worship. She looks at the differences between female and male storytellers, the relationships of the hero to the women in his tale, and the relationship of the hero to the goddess for whom he is both sacrifice and henchman. She obtains her materials from interviews with Rajput families and their servants, from songfests, from bystanders at shrines, from ritual specialists. Ultimately she shows how heroic traditions encapsulate and express ideals of perfection and masculinity, defined most visibly against the backdrop of domesticity and femininity. More broadly she argues that heroes reflect ever-changing valuations of history, and serve as sources of inspiration for facing contemporary challenges (domestic, communal, national) and concerns about the future.

Book A Monk Swimming

Download or read book A Monk Swimming written by Malachy McCourt and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this darkly humorous New York Times–bestselling memoir, the Irish American writer and actor shares charming stories from his first decade in the US. Malachy McCourt left behind a childhood of poverty and painful memories of his father and mother in Limerick, Ireland, when he followed his brother, Frank, to America in 1952. In A Monk Swimming, McCourt recounts the decade that followed. With not much else to his name other than his sharp wit and knack for storytelling, McCourt was unsure what he would do after arriving in New York City. He worked as a longshoreman on the Brooklyn docks, became the first celebrity bartender in a Manhattan saloon, performed on stage with the Irish Players, and told tales to Jack Paar on The Tonight Show. Although McCourt gained success, money, women, and, eventually, children of his own, he still carried memories of the past with him. So, he fled again. He found himself in the Manhattan Detention Complex, otherwise known as the Tombs. He was arrested several times: poolside in Beverly Hills, in Zurich with gold-smugglers, and again in Calcutta with sex workers. McCourt’s journey also took him to Paris, Rome, and even Limerick again, until finally he was forced to grapple with his past. Praise for A Monk Swimming “[A] funny, oddly winning book.” —The New York Times “A rollicking good read that, as the Irish say, would make a dead man laugh.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer “Malachy McCourt, who has habitually regurgitated English in glorious colors to his fellow Irishmen and New Yorkers, here makes his vivid, whimsical, raucous, murderous joy and voice available to the rest of us in tales of riot and glory which build on the story of the McCourts’ early life so dazzlingly told in Angela’s Ashes by his brother Frank.” —Thomas Keneally, author of the international bestseller Schindler’s List

Book The Whirligig of Time

Download or read book The Whirligig of Time written by Nora Lourie Percival and published by Book Hub Inc. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nora Percival's third memoir completes a trilogy about a woman's life during three significant spans of her long lifetime. It recaptures the arduous days of World War II, when civilians in America were focused on defending our way of life against the brutal tyranny of Nazism. As she delineates her role in the national emergency, the sympathetic reader follows her vicissitudes and the drastic dislocations suffered by so many women in wartime. The author's challenging job, in a large defense plant producing vital war materiel, broke new ground. In planning this book, Percival turned to her daily reports, still in her files. "Rereading them after more than 65 years," the narrator writes, "those hectic, pressured days that demanded all my stamina, ingenuity, empathy and endurance rose up in my memory." Woven into her chapters, these reports provide a vivid portrait of the trials and triumphs of women's private battles. It was her concern for the unhappily divided state of our present world that impelled Percival to write of a time when Americans were united, all working together to save our country from Hitler's despotic assault.

Download or read book Stalin s Genocides written by Norman M. Naimark and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chilling story of Stalin’s crimes against humanity Between the early 1930s and his death in 1953, Joseph Stalin had more than a million of his own citizens executed. Millions more fell victim to forced labor, deportation, famine, bloody massacres, and detention and interrogation by Stalin's henchmen. Stalin's Genocides is the chilling story of these crimes. The book puts forward the important argument that brutal mass killings under Stalin in the 1930s were indeed acts of genocide and that the Soviet dictator himself was behind them. Norman Naimark, one of our most respected authorities on the Soviet era, challenges the widely held notion that Stalin's crimes do not constitute genocide, which the United Nations defines as the premeditated killing of a group of people because of their race, religion, or inherent national qualities. In this gripping book, Naimark explains how Stalin became a pitiless mass killer. He looks at the most consequential and harrowing episodes of Stalin's systematic destruction of his own populace—the liquidation and repression of the so-called kulaks, the Ukrainian famine, the purge of nationalities, and the Great Terror—and examines them in light of other genocides in history. In addition, Naimark compares Stalin's crimes with those of the most notorious genocidal killer of them all, Adolf Hitler.

Book Creating Characters

Download or read book Creating Characters written by Dwight V. Swain and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A jargon-free manual on the basics of developing interesting fictional characters Vibrant, believable characters help drive a fictional story. Along with a clever plot, well-drawn characters make us want to continue reading a novel or finish watching a movie. In Creating Characters, Dwight V. Swain shows how writers can invent interesting characters and improve them so that they move a story along. “The core of character,” he says in chapter 1, “lies in each individual story person’s ability to care about something; to feel implicitly or explicitly, that something is important.” Building on that foundation—the capacity to care—Swain takes the would-be writer step-by-step through the fundamentals of finding and developing “characters who turn you on.” This basic but thought-provoking how-to is a valuable tool for both the novice and the seasoned writer.

Book Mark Twain s Notebooks and Journals Volume II

Download or read book Mark Twain s Notebooks and Journals Volume II written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve notebooks in volume 1 provided information about the eighteen years in which the most profound, even dramatic, changes took place in Clemens' life. He early achieved the limits of his boyhood ambition by becoming a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River, a position there is no reason to believe he would have abandoned if the Civil War had not forced him to do so. In fleeing from a war which principle and temperament prevented him from supporting, Clemens entered into the first stages of his literary career by serving as a reporter for newspapers in Virginia City and San Francisco. When the restricted experiences available to a local reporter had been thoroughly explored, he moved on as a traveling correspondent to the Sandwich Islands and then still farther to Europe and the Near East. The latter travels provided him with material for The Innocents Abroad, the book that established Mark Twain as a popular author with an international reputation in 1869. In 1872 he further exploited his personal history by publishing Roughing It and in the same year visited England to gather material on English people and institutions. He returned to England the following year, this time accompanied by his family and by a secretary who would record the observations printed as the last notebook in volume 1. Volume 2 of Mark Twain's Notebooks and Journals, documenting Clemens' activities in the years from 1877 to 1883, consists largely of the record of three trips which would serve as the source for three travel narratives: the excursion to Bermuda, a prolonged tour of Europe, and an evocative return to the Mississippi River. Despite the common impulse to preserve observations and impressions for literary use, the contents of the notebooks are remarkably different in their vitality-and the works which developed from the notes are correspondingly varied.

Download or read book Abraham s Conceits written by Peter Shaw and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second half of the 1800s, the United States turns her attention to the demands of Manifest Destiny, which include killing or containing the tribal people of North America and establishing a transcontinental, Anglo nation. Among the last tribes impacted are those in the Columbia River Valley and on the Columbia Plateau of the Pacific Northwest. At the same time, a movement called Washani sweeps across that area in reaction to the ascent of the Anglo-Americans. The spiritual leader is a shaman and prophet of the Wanapum tribe named Smoholla, 1813-1895. His influence on the other tribes becomes enormous. One of these is the Yakima, of what is now eastern Washington, and this tribe is one of two featured in the story. James Wilbur grows up in Upstate New York, son of a Presbyterian minister. Most, if not all, of our founding fathers were Presbyterians. His father believes God is a Presbyterian and that Methodism is a lesser religion. Naturally, James finds his way to what his father considers the Devil's trifecta: Methodism, the Methodist ministry and missionary work. James Harvey Wilbur marries Lucretia Ann Stebens on 3/9/1831, when both are nineteen. They have a daughter named Ann. Lucretia Wilbur is not a church-chosen partner for James. She smokes cigarettes, drinks whiskey and is a free thinker. The Wilburs are sent west by ship to build the first church in Portland, Oregon, and to tend to that flock. Thirty years go by. Ann grows up, marries and dies of influenza. The Wilburs, then forty-nine, head to the Columbia Plateau to begin a new life, arriving at the Yakima Indian Reservation in 1859. Both teach English; James works to convert the Indians to Methodism. The Yakima call him Father Wilbur right away; not out of affection, as is historically recorded, but as a joke, his being afflicted with paternalism and prone to pontification. James goes back east to Washington and badgers Abraham Lincoln about the corrupt government agent at the reservation, so President Lincoln appoints James to that post. James now uses his combined power to further his own agenda for the Yakima, which is assimilation through commercial agriculture. He soon realizes that isolation and death are the true aims of the reservation system, and that his helping the Yakima to transcend those intentions is an abomination to almost all the other White people. He is not dissuaded. Reservation life in the 1800s is marginal. Father Wilbur offers food, education and land, in exchange for conversion. Teams of oxen, John Deere plows, seeds, fruit trees, cattle, homestead claims; it grows, as the converted Yakima (eventually about 25% to agriculture and a lesser percentage to Methodism) become established in the world of market agriculture. Almost immediately, these farms and ranches become self-sustaining. To fund his program, however, James turns to misallocation of government funds - all in God's name. James Wilbur has maniacal rules, and his main rules conflict with the traditions of the people. The Yakima have a social security system dependent on polygamy, whereby widows and orphans are woven back into the community, also sheltering the aged in the process. It's not about wealth, sex or power. It's about survival through remarriage and adoption. James thinks of polygamy in sexual terms and gets hopelessly stuck there. Along with a bit of Mormon History, there is a comparison of these two forms of polygamy. The land of the Columbia Plateau is initially fertile, and James has no trouble selling the produce of the new Yakima farmers, because more settlers come to Oregon every day. After 1884, James helps converted Indians file homestead claims off the reservation. The Yakima are a conservative people and most of them reject Christianity and market agriculture. These people are known as Traditionals, and are referred to by James as blanket Indians. They don't recognize his rules concerning monogamy and religion. If you want the supplies and assistance available through Father Wilbur, you may have only one spouse. For him, it's a simple trade of survival for conversion, but for those who feel they have no choice, it's a family-destroying and heart-wrenching experience. The other main rule, about Methodism, has more rules attached. No leaving the reservation, no drinking, no gambling and no dancing are among them. He adds to the damage of his insistence by demanding these changes be both immediate and absolute. Father Wilbur never keeps a dime of the redirected money for himself. He gets away with this despotism and funding his program through theft for six years, until 1870, when the army returns after the start of Reconstruction. His crimes are then discovered, he is fired as agent, and most of the personal restrictions he imposed are abolished. In an instant, he falls from power. Even his church casts a dubious eye on him and suggests he might better contribute by contacting unsurrendered Indians. Lucretia convinces the church's leaders that she can watch the flock while James is away, her already having rapport with the people, and James walks off into the wilderness. What happens next involves a band of Nez Perce, a secular Jew named Sam Rathckowscki and the story of Abraham and Isaac, which is at the core of this book. Abraham's conceits are two: that he owns his children, and that God speaks to him. Abraham and his family enter the story. Catherine the Great, her last lover, and her son Paul the Nut also make cameo appearances. Sam's story is told, taking him from northern Russia to New York City, and then west as an interpreter with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, where he is invited to join the band of Nez Perce just mentioned. He remains there and marries four Nez Perce women. If you want to know what happens to James Harvey Wilbur in the wilds of Idaho, what transpires in his month with the Nez Perce, and about his then drinking antebellum whiskey at the White House with President Grant (in a meeting that really took place) you'll want to read this historically accurate and slightly fictionalized story, most of which is true.
