Book A Familiar History of Birds Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Familiar History of Birds Classic Reprint written by Edward Stanley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Familiar History of Birds Our object being rather to furnish the reader with rational and interesting facts, than systematic arrange ments, it is not intended to treat the subject of Ornitho logy* scientifically. But, at a period when the education of every class of the community is rapidly improving, and when the minds of the rising generation are in a state of advancement, fitting them for that more perfect knowledge, which, in' the preparation of elementary books, ought always to be kept in view, it is of import ance, that even the simplest work should be arranged and founded, in some degree, on scientific principles. We shall, therefore: commence with a few introductory remarks on those peculiar features in the formation and habits of Birds, by which they are distinguished from other branches of the animal creation; evincing as they do, that uniform and beautiful adaptation of means to the accomplishment of certain ends, which characterize every branch of the creation; each in its respective per fection, proving beyond contradiction, that as the works of the Lord are manifold, so in wisdom hath He made them all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Own Birds: A Familiar Natural History of the Birds of the United States Before entering fully upon our subject, there are a few observations which it will be necessary for us to make, which cannot but be of use to the young student Of Ornithology. How wonderfully is the form of a bird adapted to the element in which it is designed to move! Ive perceive that the general outline of its body is boat shaped, as being most consistent with a rapid motion through the air. The skeleton is admirably formed, both as to strength and buoyancy, many of the larger bones being hol low, and filled' with air instead of marrow. In the development of the muscles, also, we see compact ness combined with prodig.ous force; and the struc ture of the wing at once commends itself to Our notice as a propelling, as well as a supporting power, peculiarly suited 00 the wants Of the bird; while the whole body is clothed with a covering which, for lightness, warmth, and beauty, could hardly be ex celled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Life, of Wild Birds: A New Method of the Study and Photography of Birds The semi-technical parts will naturally appeal most to stu dents, but I hope they will not be without interest to the general reader. The field of animal behavior in the direction of both observa tion and experiment is of boundless extent, while on the side of inference it is full of pitfalls. Even if I have not successfully avoided the latter in every case, I have been continually on my guard. My thanks are specially due to the publishers of this volume, who have forwarded my wishes in every possible way. I am also indebted to the editors of the Century Magazine, and of Bird Lore for permission to use certain material which has already appeared in their pages, and to all critics of the earlier edition who have appreciated my efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Studies Birds are best studied as living creatures in their own homes; otherwise it is difficult to obtain any real idea of the lives they lead. Over and over again I have found that teachers have a keen desire to know how this practical study of birds can be organised both in and out of school hours, and the present volume has been written to meet this want. The twenty-four lessons which follow are arranged in the order of the Seasons. They have already been tested in my own classes both with teachers and scholars. Book The Biology of Birds Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Biology of Birds Classic Reprint written by J. Arthur Thomson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Birds The aim of this book, like that of the others in the series, is to illustrate biological ideas in reference to a particular group or class Of animals. In this case the selected class is that of birds, and the book applies to these fascinating creatures such biological concepts as adaptation, struggle, sex, heredity, variation, selec tion, and behaviour. There are many students of birds who are expert along particular lines, having, for instance, a personal familiarity with British birds and their ways, or an accurate knowledge of birds' bones or birds' eggs, or a detailed acquaintance with what is known in regard to distribution, migration, and the nature of the food, or a quite remarkable eye for flight, and ear for song. We have had the pleasure of learning much from some of these experts, a pleasure all the greater be cause the lover of birds is usually a delightful person to meet; perhaps we shall not be misunderstood if we say that this book is an attempt to unite all the specialisms in an amalgam of biological ideas. For those who have the good fortune to be nearer the beginning than the end of their studies, our book may be, we hope, of use in suggesting the length and breadth, the depth and height of the Biology of Birds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Wings: Adventures of a Camera-Hunter Among the Larger Wild Birds of North America on Sea and Land I cannot adequately explain the fascination which the wild birds have for me, and, in these days, for an increasing multi tude of people. Is it their ight, so mysterious even yet to us, their grace and beauty, their fulness Of abounding life, the interest of their nesting, the charm of their varied surround ings, the exhilaration of the quest which lures us forth into the open? It is all these and more, and fortunate are they who feel the thrill of enthusiasm for nature and in nature, be the special interest birds or whatsoever it may. In this age of strain and stress some pleasant incentive is needed to drive us from our toil and give the exercise in the pure open air which is absolutely essential to health and vigor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Birds: Elementary Studies The largest bird in the United States is the California vulture, or condor, which measures from tip to tip of its wings nine feet and a half. At the other end of the scale are the humming birds, one kind Of which, at least, has wings that are less than an inch and a half in length. Next to these insect-like midgets come the birds which have been well named in Latin Regulus, and in English kinglets, - that is to say, little kings. The fitness of the title comes first from their tiny size, the chickadee is almost a giant in comparison, - and next from the fact that they wear patches of bright color (crowns) on their heads. Two species of kinglets are found at one season or another in nearly all parts of the United States, and are known respectively as the golden crown or goldcrest and the ruby-crown.
