Book Domestic Demons and the Intimate Uncanny

Download or read book Domestic Demons and the Intimate Uncanny written by Thomas G. Kirsch and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores local cultural discourses and practices relating to manifestations and experiences of the demonic, the spectral and the uncanny, probing into their effects on people’s domestic and intimate spheres of life. The chapters examine the uncanny in a cross-cultural manner, involving empirically rich case studies from sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Europe. They use an interdisciplinary and comparative approach to show how people are affected by their intimate interactions with spiritual beings. While several chapters focus on the tensions between public and private spheres that emerge in the context of spiritual encounters, others explore what kind of relationships between humans and demonic entities are imagined to exist and in what ways these imaginations can be interpreted as a commentary on people’s concerns and social realities. Offering a critical look at a form of spiritual experience that often lacks academic examination, this book will be of great use to scholars of Religious Studies who are interested in the occult and paranormal, as well as academics working in Anthropology, Sociology, African Studies, Latin American Studies, Gender Studies and Transcultural Psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHACKING UP WITH DEMONS is Lonnie Clinkscale's testimony of the fulfillment of a vision and instruction from the Lord. His true story illustrates how the "wiles", or methods, the devil uses can pull a man who is determined to live a life of Christian integrity off the path of faith in Christ and into the snares and traps of evil. Just as the vision warned, he was discouraged, deeply hurt by his family and church, tempted into sin and much more. Part One of SHACKING UP WITH DEMONS provides the reader with an awareness of how difficulties in life can open the door for demons or evil spirits to enter a person, even a believer, without his or her knowledge. Assistance in learning to identify these spirits is provided throughout the book. Part Two includes further teaching and the testimonies of others that assist the reader in the journey to deliverance through prayer and instruction. This book is a manual you won't want to lose. It will become a frequently used reference book. It is filled with information that will help victims of the enemy out of their bondage. Book Invoking the Akelarre

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emma Wilby
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2019-08-02
  • ISBN : 1782846247
  • Pages : 467 pages

Download or read book Invoking the Akelarre written by Emma Wilby and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their dramatic descriptions of black masses and cannibalistic feasts, the records generated by the Basque witch-craze of 160914 provide us with arguably the most demonologically-stereotypical accounts of the witches sabbath or akelarre to have emerged from early modern Europe. While the trials have attracted scholarly attention, the most substantial monograph on the subject was written nearly forty years ago and most works have focused on the ways in which interrogators shaped the pattern of prosecutions and the testimonies of defendants. Invoking the Akelarre diverts from this norm by employing more recent historiographical paradigms to analyze the contributions of the accused. Through interdisciplinary analyses of both French- and Spanish-Basque records, it argues that suspects were not passive recipients of elite demonological stereotypes but animated these received templates with their own belief and experience, from the dark exoticism of magical conjuration, liturgical cursing and theatrical misrule to the sharp pragmatism of domestic medical practice and everyday religious observance. In highlighting the range of raw materials available to the suspects, the book helps us to understand how the fiction of the witches sabbath emerged to such prominence in contemporary mentalities, whilst also restoring some agency to the defendants and nuancing the historical thesis that stereotypical content points to interrogatorial opinion and folkloric content to the voices of the accused. In its local context, this study provides an intimate portrait of peasant communities as they flourished in the Basque region in this period and leaves us with the irony that Europes most sensationally-demonological accounts of the witches sabbath may have evolved out of a particularly ardent commitment, on the part of ordinary Basques, to the social and devotional structures of popular Catholicism.

Book Fairies Fractious Women and the Old Faith

Download or read book Fairies Fractious Women and the Old Faith written by Regina Buccola and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairies, unruly women, and vestigial Catholicism constituted a frequently invoked triad in late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century drama which has seldom been critically examined and therefore constitutes a significant lacuna in scholarly treatments of early modern theater, including the work of Shakespeare. Fairy tradition has lost out in scholarly critical convention to the more masculine mythologies of Christianity and classical Greece and Rome, in which female deities either serve masculine gods or are themselves masculinized (i.e., Diana as a buckskinned warrior). However, the fairy tradition is every bit as significant in our critical attempts to situate early modern texts in their historical contexts as the references to classical texts and struggles associated with state-mandated religious beliefs are widely agreed to be. fairy, rebellious woman, quasi-Catholic trio repeatedly stages resistance to early modern conceptions of appropriate class and gender conduct and state-mandated religion in A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Cymbeline, All's Well That Ends Well, and Ben Jonson's The Alchemist.

Book In the Company of Demons

    Book Details:
  • Author : Armando Maggi
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-05-12
  • ISBN : 0226501299
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book In the Company of Demons written by Armando Maggi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-05-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the familiar spirits of classical culture and what is their relationship to Christian demons? In its interpretation of Latin and Greek culture, Christianity contends that Satan is behind all classical deities, semi-gods, and spiritual creatures, including the gods of the household, the lares and penates. But with In the Company of Demons, the world’s leading demonologist Armando Maggi argues that the great thinkers of the Italian Renaissance had a more nuanced and perhaps less sinister interpretation of these creatures or spiritual bodies. Maggi leads us straight to the heart of what Italian Renaissance culture thought familiar spirits were. Through close readings of Giovan Francesco Pico della Mirandola, Strozzi Cigogna, Pompeo della Barba, Ludovico Sinistrari, and others, we find that these spirits or demons speak through their sudden and striking appearances—their very bodies seen as metaphors to be interpreted. The form of the body, Maggi explains, relies on the spirits’ knowledge of their human interlocutors’ pasts. But their core trait is compassion, and sometimes their odd, eerie arrivals are seen as harbingers or warnings to protect us. It comes as no surprise then that when spiritual beings distort the natural world to communicate, it is vital that we begin to listen.
