Book Falling While Sitting Down Stories

Download or read book Falling While Sitting Down Stories written by Joshua Fields Millburn and published by Asymmetrical Press. This book was released on 2012-07-28 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be human? How does a person find meaning in his or her life when everything's falling apart? Falling While Sitting Down is a short story collection about dealing with loneliness and discontent while balancing hope and despair. Ultimately, this book's stories deal with finding meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. The first four stories in this collection, written by Joshua Fields Millburn, discuss the struggles we face as we attempt to discover the meaning of our lives. "It's All So Quiet in Brooklyn," this collection's longest piece, follows a young but aging musician as he approaches thirty and finds himself coping with loneliness and depression in the aftermath of several life-changing events. He feels utterly alone, so he leaves Ohio to search for meaning in the most unlikely place: Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. "A Radically Attenuated History of Generation X" is, as the title suggests, an incredibly short story that attempts to summarize a particular ethos for an entire generation through the eyes of two characters on a dinner date. The title story, "Falling While Sitting Down," follows an unnamed boy through eighteen years of growing up in an extraordinarily dysfunctional family, showing the emotional muscles it takes to survive such circumstances. The collection's final story, "Loneliest Man," considers the loneliness and real-life costs of poor relationship decisions from the point of view of a particularly troubled man. As a bonus, three talented young writers--Colin Wright, Chase Night, and Mark D. Robertson--contributed to this collection, expanding the narrative beyond the scope of Joshua Fields Millburn's four stories. The seven stories in this collection vary drastically, but they all share one thing in common: each story is about what it's like to be a human being during incredibly complex times.

Book Before the Dawn A Story of the Fall of Richmond

Download or read book Before the Dawn A Story of the Fall of Richmond written by Joseph Alexander Altsheler and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tall, well-favoured youth, coming from the farther South, boarded the train for Richmond one raw, gusty morning. He carried his left arm stiffly, his face was thin and brown, and his dingy uniform had holes in it, some made by bullets; but his air and manner were happy, as if, escaped from danger and hardships, he rode on his way to pleasure and ease. He sat for a time gazing out of the window at the gray, wintry landscape that fled past, and then, having a youthful zest for new things, looked at those who traveled with him in the car. The company seemed to him, on the whole, to lack novelty and interest, being composed of farmers going to the capital of the Confederacy to sell food; wounded soldiers like himself, bound for the same place in search of cure; and one woman who sat in a corner alone, neither speaking nor spoken to, her whole aspect repelling any rash advance. Prescott always had a keen eye for woman and beauty, and owing to his long absence in armies, where both these desirable objects were scarce, his vision had become acute; but he judged that this lone type of her sex had no special charm. Tall she certainly was, and her figure might be good, but no one with a fair face and taste would dress as plainly as she, nor wrap herself so completely in a long, brown cloak that he could not even tell the colour of her eyes. Beautiful women, as he knew them, always had a touch of coquetry, and never hid their charms wholly. Prescott’s attention wandered again to the landscape rushing past, but finding little of splendour or beauty, it came back, by and by, to the lone woman. He wondered why she was going to Richmond and what was her name. She, too, was now staring out of the window, and the long cloak hiding her seemed so shapeless that he concluded her figure must be bad. His interest declined at once, but rose again with her silence and evident desire to be left alone.

Book Before the Dawn A Story of the Fall of Richmond

Download or read book Before the Dawn A Story of the Fall of Richmond written by Joseph A. Altsheler and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characters in Joseph Altsheler's "Before the Dawn" have also fallen upon "bluggy" times; but, compared with John Oxenham, Mr. Altsheler is evidently a man of peace. He has added another to the grist of Civil War stories, but he has gone a little aside from the beaten path, and has given us a story of the fall of Richmond, of the wreck of the old regime, of the death-struggle of the Confederacy. There is no violent sectional feeling in the book, and though the heroine is a Northern woman and the hero a Virginian, even that complication rouses little bitterness. Mr. Altsheler has not pictured all Southern women fair and all Southern men chivalrous, but he has done full justice to the honor and courage that supported a lost cause, has been just to Lee, the gallant and brave, as to Grant, the grim and tenacious; and, when the two great men lock forces in the Battle of the Wilderness, one forgets the cause in the magnitude of the struggle, feels only the pity of it all, the tragedy of the sacrifice upon the Union's altar.
