The conference gathered many scholars, both experienced and young, from Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Uzbekistan, Germany, Spain, Italy, Iran, Jordan, Malaysia, Greece, India, Turkey, Algeria, the Netherlands and Albania; and from the cities of Russia: namely, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Belgorod, Tambov, Volgograd, Saratov, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, and Stavropol. Great attention is paid in this volume to the functioning of different levels of linguistic units and categories of speech with regard to the factors of intra- and cross-cultural communication and pragmatics of speech. The theory of language and speech is represented not only in synchrony, but in diachrony as well in the comparative and typological aspects of the material of languages from different cultural groups, including non-literate languages, such as the Ket language. The ideas of “internal” and “external” forms of the word, and “deep” and “surface” structures of the language are also examined in this volume. A further subject of discussion here is the problem of translation, and the relation of language and speech, text and discourse. The study of the problem of language and speech in comparative terms, and in the treatment of a variety of modern trends in linguistics, gives the picture of a universal mechanism for mainstreaming as the process of translating the word of the language in question. This volume represents some of the most interesting and important ideas and researches in the field of linguistics. The book consists of six parts: namely, theoretical linguistics; lexicology; text; pragmatics; ethnolinguistics and translation; and language teaching methods. Or are we witnessing a distinction between languages that, because of their magnitude, status, strategic position, etc., can continue to exercise the function of national languages and languages that have to renounce this function? Has national linguistic ideology really ceased to make sense? What other strategies should the historic language of a given geographic area employ if it wants to continue forming part of the life of the community that is set up there? Most of the papers in this volume were written for the international conference on "Linguistics and the English Language" which was held in Toulouse on July 7 and 8, 2000. Their authors (linguists, translation specialists and stylisticians) underscore the necessarily homogeneous character of their scientific tools when applied to what obviously constitutes the common ground of their respective approaches : language. Indeed, one can hardly aim at translating the specific encoding of a given source-text into the chosen encoding of a target-text, at bringing out the traces of basic language mechanisms, at highlighting the markers of subjectivity generating significant deviations from more or less pre-established norms, without being fully aware of the enunciative, syntactic, and semantic structures of one (or several) natural language(s). This is precisely what each of the contributions selected for this volume tries to achieve, with its own specified methodological device.

Rappelons que, selon cette distinction, le terme de mediatif designe une categorie grammaticale qui, fondee sur des oppositions formelles au sein du systeme grammatical d'une langue, permet a l'enonciateur de presenter des situations (...) dont il n'assume pas la responsabilite pour en avoir eu connaissance par voie indirecte, d'ou la possibilite pour lui de manifester divers degres de distance par rapport au contenu de son propre message (Guentcheva 1996: 11).Notons que le mediatif exclut de son champ semantique tout fait presente comme un constat ou lie a la perception visuelle, que les degres de distance que l'enonciateur manifeste a l'egard du contenu propositionnel du message transmis, laissent l'enonce en dehors de toute assignation en vrai ou en faux (ibid.) et qu'il ne releve pas de la modalite epistemique. This book addresses three great questions in a variety of languages ranging from Japanese to Mohawk, including Basque, French, German, Italian, Kazakh, Spanish and Turkish, with some insights from English and Russian. The first question is the role played by information-structural strategies such as left dislocations, clefts or the morphological marking of focus in the rise of discourse particles. In the second part, papers are concerned with the relevance of information structure for the study of polysemic and polyfunctional discourse particles. Finally, the contribution of particles to the determination of the information-structural profile of the clause is examined, as well as their role in the information-structural specification of illocutionary types.
