Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riots and demonstrations, the lifeblood of American social and political protest in the 1960s, are now largely a historical memory. But Mary Fainsod Katzenstein argues that protest has not disappeared--it has simply moved off the streets into the country's core institutions. As a result, conflicts over sexual harassment, affirmative action, and the rights of women, gays and lesbians, and people of color now touch us more than ever in our daily lives, whether we are among those seeking change or those threatened by its prospects. No one is more aware of this than women demanding change from within the United States military and the American Catholic church. Women in uniform are deeply patriotic and women active in the church are devoted to their callings. Yet Katzenstein shows that these women often feel isolated and demeaned, confronted by challenges as subtle as condescension and as blatant as career obstruction. Although faithful to their institutions, many have proved fearless in their attempts to reshape them. Drawing on interviews with over a hundred women in the military and the church--including senior officers, combat pilots, lay activists, and nuns--this book gives voice to the struggles and vision of these women as they have moved protest into the mainstream. Katzenstein shows why the military and the church, similarly hierarchical and insistent on obedience, have come to harbor deeply different forms of protest. She demonstrates that women in the military have turned to the courts and Congress, whereas feminists in the church have used "discursive" protests--writing, organizing workshops and conferences--to rethink in radical ways the meanings of faith and justice. These different strategies, she argues, reflect how the law regulates the military but leaves the church alone. Faithful and Fearless calls our attention to protest within institutions as a new stage in the history both of feminism and of social movements in America. The book is an inspiring account of strength in the face of adversity and a groundbreaking contribution to the study of American feminism, social protest, and the historical development of institutions in American society.

Download or read book Judges written by Abraham Kuruvilla and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judges: A Theological Commentary for Preachers engages hermeneutics for preaching, employing theological exegesis that enables the preacher to utilize all the units of the letter to craft effective sermons. This commentary unpacks the crucial link between Scripture and application: the theology of each preaching text (i.e., what the author is doing with what he is saying). Judges is divided into fourteen preaching units and the theological focus of each is delineated. The overall theological trajectory or theme of the book deals with the failure of leadership in the community of God's people. Since God's people are all called to be leaders in some arena, to some degree, in some fashion, the lessons of Judges are applicable to all Christians. The specific theological thrust of each unit is captured in this commentary, making possible a sequential homiletical movement through each pericope of Judges. While the primary goal of the commentary is to take the preacher from text to theology, it also provides two sermon outlines for each of the twelve preaching units of Judges. The unique approach of this work results in a theology-for-preaching commentary that promises to be useful for anyone teaching through Judges with an emphasis on application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you tired of living in a constant place of fear? Tired of the havoc it reaps over your life? For so long, I allowed fear to paralyze me and keep me thinking this was the only way to live. I've learned the only way to conquer fear is to bring it face to face with my faith. I learned to see my challenges as an asset instead of a torture seeking enemy. In this 31-Day Devotional, you will use God's Word as your ultimate faith builder. Each daily faith challenge will guide and equip you for seasons when our faith is put to the test. When we begin to see that the Lord doesn't leave us to face our trials alone, we will see that there is nothing in life we need to fear. We were not designed to live cowardly lives. We were meant to live lives that are rich and full of every blessing the Lord desires to bestow upon on us. We can only live that kind of life when we get to the place where we are ready to move from being fearlessly faithless to faithfully fearless.

Book Fearless Stride Faithfully Resilient in Christ

Download or read book Fearless Stride Faithfully Resilient in Christ written by Andrea Cladis and published by . This book was released on 2019-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if instead of being 'fine, ' I could be fearless? Fearless in my love for Christ. Fearless in my pursuit of His will for my life. Fearless in my willingness to sacrifice self for others. Being fearless alone can be reckless, but being fearless in Christ, I learned, can be transformative. Designed as a twelve-week devotional series, Fearless Stride is rooted in understanding Christ and answering the question of what it means to take "fearless strides" and live authentically for Him. To develop this sense of fearlessness, we first need to practice resilience. As the events and hardships of life shape us, we are forced to re-evaluate our purpose. We can either let life sink us, or we can find a new way to float, coupled with an eagerness to swim forward. Resilience is a much about our outlook as it is about the circumstances in our lives that shape our beliefs and perspectives. This book is not merely another training plan for practicing faith, it is a life plan to take one fearless stride after another to become the person God intended you to be. The physical, emotional, and spiritual components of living in Christ are discussed alongside concrete examples and ideas for tangible output in the faith life of a believer. Through devotions such as "Grace & Grit," "Hustle & Hardship," "Challenge & Courage," and "Attitude & Adversity," Fearless Stride will guide readers to conquer fear and allow hope to manifest itself into progressive action designed to serve the Kingdom of God.

Book Fearless

Download or read book Fearless written by Eric Blehm and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go deep into SEAL Team SIX, straight to the heart of one of its most legendary operators. When Navy SEAL Adam Brown woke up on March 17, 2010, he didn’t know he would die that night in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan—but he was ready. In a letter to his children, not meant to be seen unless the worst happened, he wrote, “I’m not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this earth, because I know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me.” Fearless is the story of a man of extremes, whose courage and determination were fueled by faith, family, and the love of a woman. It’s about a man who waged a war against his own worst impulses, including drug addiction, and persevered to reach the top tier of the U.S. military. In a deeply personal and absorbing chronicle, Fearless reveals a glimpse inside the SEAL Team SIX brotherhood, and presents an indelible portrait of a highly trained warrior whose final act of bravery led to the ultimate sacrifice. Adam Brown was a devoted man who was an unlikely hero but a true warrior, described by all who knew him as…fearless. “As a rule, we don’t endorse books or movies or anything regarding the command where I work—and Adam Brown worked—but as the author writes in Fearless, ‘you have to know the rules, so you know when to bend or break them.’ This is one of those times. Read this book. Period. It succeeds where all the others have failed.” —SEAL Team SIX Operator

Jonathan Edwards: A Reference Guide (1981) and Jonathan Edwards: An Annotated Bibliography (1994) ? and the publication of a third, a gathering of commentary from 1994 to 2005. Nearly 140 essays have been added to the first and second works, while the last new gathering ? which includes a celebration of the tercentenary of Edwards??'s birth ? adds another 700 to the whole. Each of the three sections is self-contained with an introduction and annotated bibliography of its own. Adding to the immense value of this work to Edwards scholars are the chronology of Edwards??'s works, listed by date and by short and long title, which precedes the entire work, and the three comprehensive indexes ? of authors and titles, of subjects, and additions to the previous volumes.
