Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though frequently acknowledged as a remarkable phase within Czech literary history, the poetic outpouring in the build-up to and aftermath of the Munich Agreement has received comparatively little rigorous scholarly attention to date. In this study, Frances Jackson seeks redress to the balance, drawing on a range of theoretical instruments, including the idea of the event in both a narratological and more philosophical sense, and notions of rhetoric and authenticity. She establishes věrnost ("faith(fulness)", "loyalty", "verity", "troth" etc.) as the distinguishing feature of collections such as Seifert's Zhasněte světla or Halas' Torzo naděje and demonstrates how this can be constructed poetically. Rather than viewing the period as a watershed moment per se, the study also situates its output within the context of late modernism, highlighting important parallels with contemporaneous English-language works.

Book The Fidelity of Betrayal Towards a Church Beyond Belief

Download or read book The Fidelity of Betrayal Towards a Church Beyond Belief written by Peter Rollins and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Fidelity of Betrayal, Peter Rollins has teased out—as Bonhoeffer never had the chance to do—profound possibilities hidden in the phrase. As a huge fan of Peter's first book, I find his second no less thoughtful, stimulating, and at times unsettling—always in a most (de)constructive way. His subversive parables, his clever turns of phrase, and his beguiling clarity all conspire to tempt the reader into that most fertile and terrifying of activities—to think to the very rim of one's understanding, and then to faithfully imagine the Truth that lies far beyond." —Brian McLaren, author/activist (www.brianmclaren.net) What if one of the core demands of a radical Christianity lay in a call for its betrayal, while the ultimate act of affirming God required the forsaking of God? And what if fidelity to the Judeo-Christian Scriptures demanded their renunciation? In short, what would it mean if the only way of finding real faith involved betraying it with a kiss? Employing the insights of mysticism and deconstructive theory, The Fidelity of Betrayal delves into the subversive and revolutionary nature of a Christianity that dwells within the church while simultaneously undermining it.

Book Fidelity Without Fundamentalism

Download or read book Fidelity Without Fundamentalism written by Gerard J. Hughes and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As religious believers feel themselves more threatened by the modern world, they increasingly often turn to fundamentalism. The fundamentalist insists that engaging with contemporary culture ends in the watering down of Christianity to suit the passing whims of the age. Yet Gerard J. Hughes argues in Fidelity without Fundamentalism that in fact being a faithful Christian involves avoiding fundamentalism. Believers are sometimes encouraged to sweep under the carpet issues which it is thought they should be protected from for fear they might undermine their faith. The longer-term effect of this is not to preserve their faith, but to corrode it."--Publisher's description.

Book Fidelity with Plausibility

Download or read book Fidelity with Plausibility written by Wesley J. Wildman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-01-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The task of interpreting the religious significance of Jesus Christ takes shape in this book with the tension determined by two goals: fidelity to the classical Christological tradition, which draws our attention to Jesus in the first place, and plausibility with respect to all forms of contemporary knowledge. To ignore the classical tradition is to assume uncritically that contemporary plausibility structures are beyond question, while to forsake plausibility is to embrace the irrationalism of the theological ghetto-dweller. This book argues that maintaining this tension in our time can be achieved only with a modest interpretation of Jesus Christ, one that repudiates the hermeneutical absolutism associated with affirming that Jesus Christ is uniquely, exhaustively, unsurpassably significant for revelation and salvation.

Book Who Is Truth Reframing Our Questions for a Richer Faith

Download or read book Who Is Truth Reframing Our Questions for a Richer Faith written by Edwin E. Gantt and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two thousand years ago, Christ's followers asked, "How can we know the way?" Christ's reply was simple and profound: "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). What happens when we think of truth as a living, breathing person instead of as a set of abstract ideas? We wrote this book for Latter-day Saints who wish to re-examine their faith in a way that strengthens their faith in the Restoration of the Gospel. Many of our questions may not have answers because they start with the wrong premises. When we reframe our questions with God as our ultimate goal, rather than a set of abstract doctrines or ideas, they are easier to answer using the scriptures and more likely to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ.

Download or read book Fidelity written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 1999-10-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a time when marital fidelity is under assault. Driven by the forces of relativism, our society attacks sexual faithfulness on numerous fronts. The push for homosexual marriages, for example, comes at the end of the fall into perversion, not the beginning. Faithless husbands began the fall long ago, and our culture, with all its washed-out self-help books, fails to address the real problem -- sin. Addressed to men, Fidelity hits hard, using clear language and focusing on specific sins with specific solutions: adultery, divorce, polygamy, celibacy, pornography, and more. But in the end, the antidote to all sexual temptation is simple -- the godly honoring of the marriage bed: "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Heb. 13:4).

Book Keeping Faith with the Constitution

Download or read book Keeping Faith with the Constitution written by Goodwin Liu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chief Justice John Marshall argued that a constitution "requires that only its great outlines should be marked [and] its important objects designated." Ours is "intended to endure for ages to come, and consequently, to be adapted to the various crises of human affairs." In recent years, Marshall's great truths have been challenged by proponents of originalism and strict construction. Such legal thinkers as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia argue that the Constitution must be construed and applied as it was when the Framers wrote it. In Keeping Faith with the Constitution, three legal authorities make the case for Marshall's vision. They describe their approach as "constitutional fidelity"--not to how the Framers would have applied the Constitution, but to the text and principles of the Constitution itself. The original understanding of the text is one source of interpretation, but not the only one; to preserve the meaning and authority of the document, to keep it vital, applications of the Constitution must be shaped by precedent, historical experience, practical consequence, and societal change. The authors range across the history of constitutional interpretation to show how this approach has been the source of our greatest advances, from Brown v. Board of Education to the New Deal, from the Miranda decision to the expansion of women's rights. They delve into the complexities of voting rights, the malapportionment of legislative districts, speech freedoms, civil liberties and the War on Terror, and the evolution of checks and balances. The Constitution's framers could never have imagined DNA, global warming, or even women's equality. Yet these and many more realities shape our lives and outlook. Our Constitution will remain vital into our changing future, the authors write, if judges remain true to this rich tradition of adaptation and fidelity.
