Book The Fundamental Doctrines of the Christian Faith

Download or read book The Fundamental Doctrines of the Christian Faith written by Reuben Archer Torrey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1918 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of these sermons has had a feeling for a long time that the great need in our churches in this day is systematic indoctrination. He put his theory into practice last winter in his own church, and these sermons are the result. We were having a great many accessions to our church. In the two years of the church's history we had had something like six hundred accessions to the church, and every month considerable numbers of new members were being added. While many of these came by letter from other churches, many of them were new converts and had had practically no systematic instruction in the fundamental truths of the Christian faith, so we announced a series of sermons on The Fundamental Doctrines of the Christian Faith. There was immediately a large increase in the attendance at the services where these addresses were given, and this increase has kept up until on the last Lord's Day we had much the largest attendance we have ever had, excepting on Easter Sunday. Many have testified to the blessing received from these sermons, and there has been a great demand that the sermons be printed for general circulation. This request has come from ministers of various denominations, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, and others. It is hoped that this volume will be useful to other pastors in suggesting lines of teaching in their regular pastoral work, and also that it may be used widely by pastors and others for circulation among Christians. We live in a day in which many of our church members are all at sea as to what they believe on the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. These sermons have already helped many through their delivery. It is hoped they will reach and help far more in the printed form.

Book Holding Faith

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cynthia L. Rigby
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press
  • Release : 2018-04-17
  • ISBN : 1426758154
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Holding Faith written by Cynthia L. Rigby and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther wrote: “Faith takes hold of Christ and has Him present, enclosing Him as a ring encloses a gem.” We hold faith as we seek to know Christ better, exploring Christian doctrines and deepening our understanding of their relevance to our day-to-day lives. Faith holds us as we respond to Christ’s calling, negotiate life’s challenges, and join in the work of bringing in God’s kingdom. This introduction to Christian theology shows how various understandings of particular doctrines play out in relation to the way we live our lives. It explores the content of core Christian doctrines and celebrates the “so what?” of each. Using theological literature and Scripture, but also current events, sociology, fiction, and movies, Rigby shows that theology is key to how we come to understand and negotiate our world. Holding Faith contends that some approaches to Christian doctrine are preferable to others, making persuasive arguments for creative ways of believing that can enliven our lives, and the life of the world. Theology has relevance because it can stymie or transform. How will we hold our faith? “Cynthia Rigby has written an accessible and lucid book of theological reflection for today’s believers, seekers, and doubters. This is no small feat. The book succeeds in the daunting challenges of presenting Christian theology with clarity and completeness, with commitment and generosity. It is an admirable text for theology students, pastors, and all those interested in understanding more deeply their faith and life.” Leanne Van Dyk, President and Professor of Theology, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA "This is an extraordinary book. Cynthia Rigby is a Reformed theologian, a minister, and a teacher. All of these gifts are evident in Holding Faith, as Rigby offers an eloquent introduction to Christian theology that is academically rich, pastorally sensitive, and profoundly accessible. She does not make theology accessible by watering it down, but rather by explaining it with compelling clarity. Holding Faith is perfect for seminarians, pastors, church groups, and curious souls; for those who are new to Christianity and those who have been studying and living Christian faith their entire lives. It will be an enormous blessing to those who teach theology and those who preach the gospel." Shannon Craigo-Snell, Professor of Theology, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY "Cindy Rigby's is a timely, necessary, and accessible voice in theological discourse, not only for those who together comprise Christendom but also for those who are curious enough about what Christian doctrines offer by way of challenge, critique, and comfort in our increasingly distracted, fractious world. Holding Faith is a prophetic, priestly, and pastoral defense of a faith tradition that historically contributed to this oppressive state of affairs - yet undoubtedly remains rife with redemptive possibility - for individuals, communities, nations, the cosmos. In its pages, Rigby provides church folks, people of other faiths, seminarians, and inquisitive "nones" with a "thoughtful place" to search out our private and corporate relationships to the God whom the doctrines signify, however imperfectly." JoAnne Marie Terrell, Associate Professor of Theology, Ethics, and the Arts, Chicago Theological Seminary "For those of us who teach theology, it’s rare to find a text that is accessible to those with no previous exposure to theology while also introducing readers in deep and expansive ways to major doctrinal teachings. But Rigby has managed to accomplish both here. This is a profoundly personal and invitational approach to thinking theologically in ways that demonstrate the relevance of ancient teachings for our world today. And it is also a serious engagement with the biblical text, a vast array of historical and contemporary theological voices, poetry, literature, film, and more—this introduction to theology will empower readers to hold onto faith in new and exciting ways." Deanna A. Thompson, Professor of Religion at Hamline University, St. Paul, MN

Book The Fundamental Doctrines of the Christian Faith

Download or read book The Fundamental Doctrines of the Christian Faith written by R. A. Torrey and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We agree with Dr. Torrey that there is great need for clear and popular preaching of Christian doctrine. This need was met by Dr. Torrey in the case of his own Church, and will now be met in that of many readers to whom these sermons shall come in printed form. There are fifteen sermons, and the subjects treated are the Inspiration of the Bible, the Christian Conception of God, the Deity and Person of Christ, the Personality and Deity of the Holy Spirit, the Atonement, Justification, the New Birth, Sanctification, the Resurrection of the Body, the Devil, Future Punishment....These great doctrines are expounded clearly, simply, and in a thoroughly evangelic spirit and tone....We would close this notice by emphasizing again the great need today for just such preaching as Dr. Torrey has given in these sermons, and by commending them to all who feel the need of instruction in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity." -The Princeton Theological Review "The author is a Congregational minister, and his point of view is about the point of view that would have been taken by Jonathan Edwards, the greatest of all Congregational theologians. He is strongly conservative and strongly Calvinistic. He believes in verbal inspiration and in literal hell fire. His arguments are taken entirely from the Bible. To him the Bible is final authority on all questions. The reader will find this book a vast storehouse of proof texts, logically and systematically arranged....These sermons drew large audiences....The author avoids all technical and scholastic terms, and speaks in the language of the Bible and of the people. The layman who wishes to know what the Bible teaches on these fundamental doctrines will find this a helpful book." -The Union Seminary Review "For young Christians, as well as many older ones, this will be most helpful. It is a much felt need today that there should be more thorough instruction on the essentials of the Christian faith and Mr. Torrey's exceptional ability as a Bible student makes him a most helpful teacher on this subject." -Record of Christian Work "Instruction in the fundamental truths of Christianity first delivered as sermons." -Publishers Weekly "The sermons, fifteen in number, cover the principal subjects of Christian doctrine in an attractive, clear and earnest way; and are calculated to help many to a deeper and more serious reckoning with their Christian profession....We have profited by contact with his earnest Christian mind." -The Living Church CONTENTS I Inspiration, or To What Extent is the Bible Inspired of God? II The Christian Conception of God, or the God of the Bible as Distinguished from the God of Christian Science and the God of Modern Philosophy III The Christian Conception of God--The Infinite Perfection and Unity of God IV The Deity of Jesus Christ V Jesus Christ a Real Man VI The Personality of the Holy Spirit VII The Deity of the Holy Spirit and the Distinction Between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit VIII The Atonement: God's Doctrine of the Atonement vs. Unitarian and Christian Science Doctrines of the Atonement IX The Distinctive Doctrine of Protestantism: Justification by Faith X The New Birth XI Sanctification XII The Resurrection of the Body of Jesus and of Our Bodies XIII The Devil XIV Is There a Literal Hell? Book The Great Doctrines of the Bible

Download or read book The Great Doctrines of the Bible written by William Evans and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrines treated in this book are dealt with from the standpoint of Biblical rather than Dogmatic theology. This is evident from the plan which is followed in the work, namely, to gather together all the Scripture passages dealing with the subject under consideration, and from them choose a required number that may be called representative; then seek to understand the meaning of these references by the study of the text itself as well as its context and parallel passages; and finally, from the selected proof-texts, formulate the doctrinal teaching, and place such results under appropriate headings. The doctrines of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are more fully dealt with than the doctrines which follow. This is especially true of the doctrine of God. The reason for this is to set forth the method pursued in these studies, and to give a pattern for the study of the doctrines to follow. (William Evans, The Great Doctrines of the Bible)

Book Foundational Doctrines of the Christian Faith

Download or read book Foundational Doctrines of the Christian Faith written by Tim Adams and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common misperception about Bible doctrine is that such teaching is boring. Dr. Adams brings to life and interest ten major Bible Doctrines from God's Word. You will not be bored with this compelling book. The first chapter discusses why the question, "Where did God come from," does not fit reality any more than "What does the color blue smell like?" How about the question in Chapter Two which asks, "If Jesus Christ had died on the cross but was never raised from the dead, could we be saved?" Thorough answers are given to provocative questions about God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, Satan, Man, Salvation, the Church, the Bible, and Prophecy. The inclusion of the chapter on Prayer, suggesting that prayer is the Christian's greatest expression of dependency on God, is priceless. It exceeds most doctrinal studies that rarely touch the subject. This book would be incredibly useful to teach in small group Bible studies or in a whole congregational setting. Help your life to be "grounded and settled" in the truth so that you would not be "so soon moved" to another gospel (Colossians 1:23 and Galatians 1:6).
