Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightful book, which is a revisionist math history as well as a revisionist art history, Tony Robbin, well known for his innovative computer visualizations of hyperspace, investigates different models of the fourth dimension and how these are applied in art and physics. Robbin explores the distinction between the slicing, or Flatland, model and the projection, or shadow, model. He compares the history of these two models and their uses and misuses in popular discussions. Robbin breaks new ground with his original argument that Picasso used the projection model to invent cubism, and that Minkowski had four-dimensional projective geometry in mind when he structured special relativity. The discussion is brought to the present with an exposition of the projection model in the most creative ideas about space in contemporary mathematics such as twisters, quasicrystals, and quantum topology. Robbin clarifies these esoteric concepts with understandable drawings and diagrams. Robbin proposes that the powerful role of projective geometry in the development of current mathematical ideas has been long overlooked and that our attachment to the slicing model is essentially a conceptual block that hinders progress in understanding contemporary models of spacetime. He offers a fascinating review of how projective ideas are the source of some of today’s most exciting developments in art, math, physics, and computer visualization.

Book The Gothic Fairy Tale in Young Adult Literature

Download or read book The Gothic Fairy Tale in Young Adult Literature written by Joseph Abbruscato and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in the oral traditions of cultures worldwide, fairy tales have long played an integral part in children's upbringing. Filled with gothic and fantastical elements like monsters, dragons, evil step-parents and fairy godmothers, fairy tales remain important tools for teaching children about themselves, and the dangers and joys of the world around them. In this collection of new essays, literary scholars examine gothic elements in more recent entries into the fairy tale genre--for instance, David Almond's Skellig, Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and Coraline and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events--exploring such themes as surviving incest, and the capture and consumption of children. Although children's literature has seen an increase in reality-based stories that allow children no room for escape from their everyday lives, these essays demonstrate the continuing importance of fairy tales in helping them live well-rounded lives.

Book Fairy Tales with a Black Consciousness

Download or read book Fairy Tales with a Black Consciousness written by Vivian Yenika-Agbaw and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The all new essays in this book discuss black cultural retellings of traditional, European fairy tales. The representation of black protagonists in such tales helps to shape children's ideas about themselves and the world beyond--which can ignite a will to read books representing diverse characters. The need for a multicultural text set which includes the multiplicity of cultures within the black diaspora is discussed. The tales referenced in the text are rich in perspective: they are Aesop's fables, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Ananse. Readers will see that stories from black perspectives adhere to the dictates of traditional literary conventions while still steeped in literary traditions traceable to Africa or the diaspora.

Book Consciousness In Four Dimensions Biological Relativity and the Origins of Thought

Download or read book Consciousness In Four Dimensions Biological Relativity and the Origins of Thought written by Richard M. Pico and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2001-11-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book that will profoundly alter the modern discourse on mind and influence the practice of neuromedicine, neurobiologist/neuropsychiatrist, Richard M. Pico unveils a revolutionary new approach to understanding consciousness that pinpoints its origins in the brain. Called “Biological Relativity,” the approach combines the laws of physics—especially Einstein’s laws of relativity—to the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience, molecular biology, and computational theory to create a coherent four-dimensional model for explaining the origins of life and the emergence of complex biological systems—from the living cell to the thinking brain. In a fascinating, ambitious narrative that draws upon a lifetime of experimental and clinical work, Dr. Pico tells a riveting story that begins in the imponderably distant past, with the first proto-cell that endured long enough to become its own frame of reference—both structurally and temporally—and culminates with the most complex biological referent system known to science, the human brain. He then elaborates his groundbreaking theory through discussions of such things as the origins of language, music, and mathematics. He explains why he believes consciousness is uniquely human, and explores the causes and potential treatments for a variety of thought disorders.

Book The Diamond Light

Download or read book The Diamond Light written by Violet Starre and published by Light Technology Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present esoteric teachings similar to those given to Alice A. Bailey during the period between the two great world wars and offer them to the public in an updated form that is short, concise and simple. The original teachings from the Master Djwhal Khul were presented in lengthy volumes that were somewhat difficult to understand without a thorough background in the religion known as Theosophy, founded by Madame Blavatsky in the late 19th century. It is the Master's current wish that he contribute a short book to the world that is simple and clear to the general New Age reader. The Master is one member of a planetary council of spiritual beings who exist within another dimension and who guide the spiritual destiny of this planet and the life forms on it. Although a spiritual government exists, it does not interfere with the free will of humanity but occasionally sends teachers to guide us. The master would like to convey the concept that he is accessible to average mortals and does not reserve his communication only for the most well-read and well-known advanced souls. Rather, he is available for those who most desperately need him, who feel as if they are struggling to survive in the modern world without a message of hope.
