Book excerpt: Winner at the 2013 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. Visit this fair full of magic, where a simple movement of the hand can set in motion all the rides. Once upon a time, my dad took me to a very special fair a long, long way from home. As soon as we arrived, he asked me to wave my hands in the air like a magician so that the lights would turn on or off as I pleased. “It’s amazing!” I shouted with joy. Today my dad has taken me to the fair, and you can't imagine how excited I am. It is a magical place, full of lights, colors, music and, above all, fun! However, this fair has something special that makes it different from the others... A witch has hung up her broom to become the driver of a flying train, a snow-capped Helter Skelter, and Bumper Cars that can zoom off to wherever the driver wants and ride through the venue... This fair seems to have come to life!

Book A Cinematic Artist

Download or read book A Cinematic Artist written by Kim Knowles and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American artist Man Ray was one of the most influential figures of the historical avant-garde, contributing significantly to the development of both Dadaism and Surrealism. Whilst his pioneering work in photography assured him international acclaim, his activity in other areas, notably film, is to this day both unknown and undervalued. During the 1920s Man Ray made four short experimental films and collaborated on a host of other projects with people such as Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Léger, René Clair and Hans Richter. These works, along with a series of cinematic essays and home movies made during the 1920s and 1930s, represent the most important contribution to the development of an alternative mode of filmmaking in the early twentieth century. This book explores Man Ray's cinematic interactions from the perspective of his interdisciplinary artistic sensibility, creating links between film, photography, painting, poetry, music, architecture, dance and sculpture. By exposing his preoccupation with form, and his ambiguous relationship with the politics and aesthetics of the Dada and Surrealist movements, the author paints an intimate and complex portrait of Man Ray the filmmaker.

Book Materializing Memories

Download or read book Materializing Memories written by Susan Aasman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multitude of devices and technological tools now exist to make, share, and store memories and moments with family, friends, and even strangers. Memory practices such as home movies, which originated as the privilege of a few, well-to-do families, have now emerged as ubiquitous and immediate cultures of sharing. Departing from the history of home movies, this volume offers a sophisticated understanding of technologically mediated, mostly ritualized memory practices, from early beginnings in the fin-de-siècle to today. Departing from a longue durée perspective on home movie practices, Materializing Memories moves beyond a strict historical study to grapple with highly theorized fields, such as media studies, memory studies, and science and technology studies (STS). The contributors to this volume reflect on these different intellectual backgrounds and perspectives, but all chapters share a common framework by addressing practices of use, user configurations, and relevant media landscapes. Grasping the cultural dynamics of such multi-faceted practices requires a multidimensional conceptual approach, here achieved by centering around three concepts as central analytical lenses: dispositifs, generations, and amateurs.

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Fairground Attractions written by Deborah Philips and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. The study investigates the cultural production of the visual iconography of popular pleasure grounds from the eighteenth century pleasure garden to the contemporary theme park. Deborah Philips identifies the literary genres, including fairy tale, gothic horror, Egyptiana and the Western which are common to carnival sites, tracing their historical transition across a range of media to become familiar icons of popular culture.Though the bricolage of narratives and imagery found in the contemporary leisure zone has been read by many as emblematic of postmodern culture, the author argues that the clash of genres and stories is less a consequence of postmodern pastiche than it is the result of a history and popular tradition of conventionalised iconography.

Book It s Hard to Be Good

Download or read book It s Hard to Be Good written by Charlie Seiga and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Times were hard in the 1940s and early '50s: kids went hungry and food was rationed; some families had to beg, steal or borrow to survive. But Charlie found his own way out. On a routine basis, together with his childhood gang, they became kid grafters (bang into crime). They did what they had to do, providing food to put on their family's table amongst other things. In 1953, aged 13, Charlie and his gang were always bunking off school. He went on to make further progress with his life. With his baby face and dressed as an office boy in a blazer, shirt, and tie, he was darting in and out of buildings in the city centre of Liverpool, buildings which provided rich pickings as he raided their cash drawers and safes. Charlie meets his mentor: an older woman, who was a professional in the business. She teaches him how to rob high-class jewellers of their expensive diamond rings: a well planned-out scene which is typical of the classic, highly rewarding cases of jewellery robberies of the time. Here's what Charlie has to say about his younger self: 'In 1954 and at the age of fourteen, I was earning more money than a professional adult. I was the richest poor teenager in Liverpool.'
