Book excerpt: "This dissertation is divided into six sections. The first section includes a review of the literature on the mechanical properties of glass, including glass strength. Section two describes a study of the effects of composition of calcium aluminoborosilicate glasses on the inert and room temperature two-point bending failure characteristics of glass fibers, including fatigue and aging effects. Sections three and four include studies of the effects of composition and structure of alkali silicate and aluminosilicate glasses on the inert two-point bending fiber failure properties. Section five describes the inert two- point bending failure results of sodium borate glass fibers. Section six includes a study of the effects of melting time and temperature (i.e. thermal history) on the resulting two- point bending failure properties of glass fibers produced from a variety of glass compositions. Throughout the course of this work, new experimental equipment and techniques were developed so that high quality failure measurements could be obtained. When glass melts were prepared to ensure homogeneity, the failure properties were shown to be sensitive to glass composition and structure and the reproducibility of the failure data was less than for a variety of different silicate glass compositions. Fibers have also been aged under controlled humidity and temperature conditions to characterize the effects of aging time on the failure strain. With the ability to produce and test high quality fiber, a new failure property of glass has been observed. Fibers tested under liquid nitrogen produce failure strains that depend on the testing rate of the two-point bending equipment. In the case of silica glass fibers, failure strain increases with increasing testing rate, an effect attributed to 'normal' inert fatigue behavior. However, some glasses, such as the high alkali silicates and soda lime silicates, show the opposite dependence of failure strain on testing rate, where slower testing rates produce greater failure strains (i.e. an "inert delayed failure effect"). Book excerpt: In glass-reinforced-plastic rockets such as Polaris A3 and third stage Minuteman, the current strength/weight advantage over metals has been achieved in a major degree by utilizing a new glass designated S or S-994. Examination of what is meant by the strength of glass filaments has led to a new method of characterizing the strength, especially for the purpose of exploring new glasses. Since the tensile strength is influenced by flaws and by environmental effects, the strength is therfore strongly dependent on the gage length tested and the time under load. In considering the statistical distribution of fiber strengths more than one population of flaws has been detected. The amount of damage to the fibers in such handling as the making of roving is rather severe, judged by the size or length effect on the strength of filaments. On the other hand with good design this mechanical damage is not reflected in a correspondingly large size effect in the strength of pressure vessels. (Author).

Book excerpt: Glass fibres are melt-spun, silica-based inorganic materials. Their main application is in glass fibre-reinforced composites, which account for more than 90% of all fibre-reinforced composites currently produced. Nevertheless, improvement of the key properties of composites remains challenging. The objective of this reprint is to focus on actual research topics related to glass fibres comprising multifunctional nanostructured surfaces, e.g., graphene, which can lead to electrically conductive fibres and their interphases in composites that are capable of uptake under a variety of mechanical, chemical, humidity, and thermal conditions for in situ sensing functions. Sizing of glass fibres help to protect the filaments from failure during processing and improves wetting and adhesion strength. Furthermore, the interphase may be varied by suppressing or promoting heterogeneous nucleation of a thermoplastic matrix and, thus, the transcrystalline layer can improve the mechanical performance. Improved interfacial shear strength was shown with chitosan as a coupling agent in phosphate glass fiber/polycaprolactone composites. Modulus mapping of plasma-synthesised interphases in glass fibre/polyester composites was used to examine the local mechanical properties across the interphase region. In addition, numerous analytical techniques were applied to investigate changes within the surface of unsized boron-free E-glass fibers after thermal conditioning at temperatures up to 700 °C.

Book excerpt: Existing and newly obtained optical glass fiber fatigue data over a wide temperature and humidity range were analyzed using the stress corrosion model of crack growth. Values obtained for the order of the reaction (humidity exponent), activation energy, and stress constant were compared with those obtained directly from crack growth studies. It was found that the data from different sources did not correlate well with each other and that none of the sets of data agreed with the stress corrosion model. It is believed that the polymer coatings on the fibers may play a complex role in determining the availability of moisture at the glass surface or that different fatigue mechanisms operate at different stress levels. Considering the uncertainty and ambiguity associated with modeling optical glass fiber fatigue data, an empirical approach to lifetime predictions is recommended in which a function that "best fits" the data obtained under service temperatures and humidities is used for prediction. It must be pointed out, however, that extrapolating outside the data range may result in inaccuracies in the predictions.
