Book excerpt: Graduate student mistrust and fear of the institutional review board (IRB) is an issue that is commonly encountered at academic institutions. Research has shown that students emulate and are vulnerable to assuming the norms of faculty, which is supported by research that shows that students who have difficult relationships with the IRB often have faculty mentors who also have difficult relationships with the IRB. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how novice researchers’ perceptions of the IRB changed through their research submission and IRB interactions required during the IRB approval process, as well as to identify the factors that influenced their attitudes or attitude changes. Novice researchers were recruited from Facebook groups geared toward doctoral students and completed questionnaires to explore participants’ expectations and perceptions, as well as to identify the factors that influenced their attitudes or attitude changes. The findings from this small sample suggest that optimistic and positive messages are being conveyed to students by influencers but may not be treated in the same way that negative or cautionary tales are. Further, there are sources of influence on the IRB experience other than faculty that may dilute the faculty’s influence.

The study was conducted to (1) determine differences between faculty users and faculty non-users awareness, perceptions and attitudes about the role and processes of the IRB on one 1890 land grant campus; (2) determine when controlling for status, rank, years of service, and age and the degree to which these variables contributed to the identification of the faculty profile for faculty users and faculty non-users of the local IRB at one 1890 land grant university; and (3) expand scholarly works and empirical literature related to the local IRB's role in human participant's research and its impact upon the university land grant community. This study was conducted at one 1890 land grant institution located in south central United States during the fall of 2007. The sample group consisted of 50 faculty who were self-identified as faculty users and faculty non-users of the IRB and reported their status, rank, years of service, and age. An electronic survey instrument was used to obtain data for this study. Secondary data was secured and analyses were conducted to assess the levels of awareness, perceptions, and attitudes about the role and processes of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), using the SPSS analysis package. Several procedures were employed to aggregate the data: frequencies and cross tabulations, analysis of variances of covariates (ANCOVA), and multivariate analyses of covariates (MANCOVA) to compare specific group mean scores of faculty users and faculty non-users, tenure and tenure track. The significance level was set using an alpha level of .05. The findings revealed (1) that faculty users and faculty non-users had differences between the levels of awareness and attitude; (2) perception remained high among faculty users and faculty non-users; however, (3) when controlling for years of service and age, there were significant differences between the faculty user and faculty nonuser groups.

Book excerpt: This book examines perspectives of fulltime faculty at the School of Education in a major public research university in the United States on their socialization experiences to research. Faculty completed a survey providing insights on their perceptions regarding their research-related experiences during their graduate, early-career, and current stages. Faculty were also asked to provide their perceptions on the institution's efforts towards their research socialization in addition to other descriptive data. Correlations between several types of research activities among faculty member's different career stages were significant. Perceptions concerning socialization to the faculty position were more positive regarding the contribution of faculty members' graduate experiences compared to the institutional efforts. Finally, perceptions regarding the available socialization programs at the institution were positive in general, and were also highly correlated with faculty members' perception about their overall experiences with the institution.
