Book excerpt: Pacific Ocean Park - or P.O.P. - was extraordinary in both its glamorous rise and spectacular fall. Located between Santa Monica and Venice, it was a family-oriented attraction in the '50s with modernist-style rides. P.O.P.'s attendance surpassed that of Disneyland and was often widely seen in movies and television shows throughout the '60s. Its Cheetah auditorium hosted important early rock shows, including those by The Doors and Pink Floyd. Merritt and Priore's spectacular history features hundreds of images, most of them unseen, including original ride designs.

Book Silenced Facts

Download or read book Silenced Facts written by Bianca Theisen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the silence that continues to shroud Austria’s historical past, Austrian literature after 1950 wants to retrace an untold history that left its marks in mental schemata and cultural clichés. The question how literature can refer to the facts silenced by a political unconscious, the question of literary reference and reality description, lies at the core of Austrian literature since the 1950’s. This book traces the development of contemporary Austrian fiction from the 1950s to the 1990s, showing how the Vienna Group’s literary reductionism led to gesture of mere pointing in happening and performance. While strongly indebted to the experimental techniques of the Vienna Group, later Austrian authors such as Thomas Bernhard, Peter Handke, Peter Rosei, and Gerhard Roth employ literary forms and extra-literary media prone to the indexical in an attempt to cut through the net of linguistic and cultural clichés, alluding to the microfascisms latent in common percepts, and indexing a reality that eludes plain description.

Book Quicklet On David Allen s Getting Things Done CliffNotes like Book Summary and Analysis

Download or read book Quicklet On David Allen s Getting Things Done CliffNotes like Book Summary and Analysis written by Larisa Troche and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK I think entrepreneurs, because of their high level of achievement and drive, are constantly looking at ways to do things faster, better, smarter; I am no exception. As an overly busy businesswoman, I was drawn to the title of the book, as I was looking for productivity tools that I would actually use on a regular basis. In the hopes that the pages contained a magic wand, I quickly scanned through them for the one tip that I could immediately use -- something that would make a dent in my workload. I was also very drawn to the concept of having a quiet, clutter-free mind. What I liked about David Allen’s “Getting Things Done: The Art of stress-Free Productivity” was that there was a certain simplicity to his suggestions for getting organized. MEET THE AUTHOR Ms. Larisa Troche is a multi-preneur as founder and CEO of her company The Larisa Group which provides professional management and consulting services for small business and real estate. She is also the founder of Pink Passport Society, Inc. the premier worldwide “insider’s club” for women creating wealth through community and connections. Larisa holds a California Real Estate Broker’s license, a Masters in Business Administration, and a Bachelor’s degree in Human Relations Management. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Next, in Part II, Practicing Stress-free Productivity, the whole system unfolds and it’s finally time to begin, starting with preparing the time, space and tools for implementing the techniques. Extra attention needs to be paid to correctly setting up your filing system, which should include a General Reference File (emails, brochures, notes, etc. that you want to retain for future use); using one alphabetic filing system (not multiple iterations for different projects). Start with all the physical things that aren’t where they should be. Ideally you’ll want to try and put everything into your in-basket (literally). Once you’ve collected all the “things” it is time to empty your brain and make a list of every single thing, every mental to-do, on a separate sheet of paper -- not one long list. Emptying your brain includes writing your voicemails down and putting them in the inbox as well as your day planner if you use one. Buy a copy to continue reading!

Book Movie Stars Do the Dumbest Things

Download or read book Movie Stars Do the Dumbest Things written by Margaret Moser and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johnny Depp. Marilyn Monroe. Marlon Brando. Leonardo DiCaprio. Woody Allen. Shanron Stone. What do all of these actors have in common? They're outrageous, receive huge salaries, have enormous egos, and have way too much spare time. Their out-of-control lifestyles prove that, as one Hollywood observer noted, "Hollywood is a trip through a sewer in a glass-bottomed boat." You'll learn which director was furious when he was misquoted as saying, "Actors are cattle." He claimed he had really said, "Actors should be treated as cattle." You'll discover that Bruce Wilis ordered the final scenes in Striking Distance to be re-shot at a cost of over $750,000 because the original shots exposed his toupee. You'll find that Melanie Griffith explained her ignorance of the Nazi holocaust by saying, "I don't know why I didn't know. Maybe I missed school that day...I'm not stupid." Whether you're a fan of Hugh Grant, Dennis Hopper, or Whoopi Goldberg, you'll learn about all of the embarrassing moments in your favorite star's life. From actors like Ben Affleck and Cameron Diaz to screen legends like Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, Movie Stars Do the Dumbest Things is proof that actors are more childish and impulsive than you've ever imagined.

Book The Lost Art of Ladyhood

Download or read book The Lost Art of Ladyhood written by Jessie Funk and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teenage girl’s guide to being a confident, classy lady of substance in a substance-less world. In a world where women and girls are constantly under attack from the media with photoshopped, airbrushed images and popstars that tell them all they need to do is party all the time, kiss a lot of boys, be a “mean girl” to gain popularity, max their credit cards to buy designer clothes, etc., The Lost Art of Ladyhood communicates the counterpoint to those of our teen popstars. Happiness does not come from revealing all your skin, going clubbing every weekend where you get so drunk you don’t remember who you kissed, or maxing your credit cards just so you can buy the latest designer jeans. Happiness comes from living a life of character. Teaching girls how to be ladylike has little to do with crossing your ankles and sipping tea correctly; it’s about giving them tools and skills they can use to serve others, to be grateful, to think positively, to set powerful goals, to protect themselves from toxic relationships, and to learn to love themselves enough to where they learn to love others. The Lost Art of Ladyhood is a road map for navigate your way to confidence, classy-ness, character, and learning the lost art of being a lady. Praise for The Lost Art of Ladyhood “[Jessie Funk’s] cool enough to be your older sister and wise enough to be your aunt. The principles in this book will help my daughter and yours grow to become true women of character, confidence, and substance.” —Josh Shipp, Teen Behavior Expert & Host of Parental Guidance “Jessie Funk is a vital voice for the truth, and provides young girls the structure, framework, and inspiration to understand their true beauty and live in a way that creates true success. A girl who knows who she is, what she is worth, and what she can accomplish in her life is unstoppable. These are the types of women we need for the society of tomorrow, so this is the type of education we need to be providing our daughters today.” —Tara starling, founder of Taking Back Beauty Foundation and award-winning Hollywood makeup artist “A beacon of light and goodness in a world that is increasingly dark and difficult for teen girls. . . . [Jessie Funk] helps girls build confidence and self-esteem, teaches about some of the very real dangers that are lurking in this world, and offers a place of safety to share thoughts and dreams in a no judgment zone. I would wholeheartedly recommend [Jessie’s] curriculum for every teen girl.” —Michelle Millburn, author and business coach
