Book Computers in the Primary Curriculum

Download or read book Computers in the Primary Curriculum written by Nigel Ellam and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of microcomputers in elementary education is described by focusing on an empirical study of computer use in a 10% random sample of elementary schools in one large local education authority. The inclusion of people at the "grass roots" level was considered to be a priority. Interviews of school-level administrators, teachers, and students were supplemented by first-hand observations of computer utilization. Results indicate that schools vary tremendously both in terms of the use to which they put computers and the effectiveness of computer applications in the classroom. In spite of the publicity and the rhetoric of politicians, generally speaking the introduction of the microcomputer has led to very few changes of any significance. Results of the study are presented in three sections: (1) facilities and fabric (factors relating to hardware, software, and school buildings); (2) human involvement (headteachers' and teachers' attitudes and opinions, inservice provision, and students' attitudes); and (3) organization and management (factors relating to school organization and classroom management of the microcomputer). Ethnographic data are presented throughout all three sections. A list of 10 recommendations for encouraging better microcomputer use concludes the report. (45 references) (GL)

Book Integrating Information Technology into Education

Download or read book Integrating Information Technology into Education written by Donald Watson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deryn Watson and David Tinsley The topic of the conference, integrating infonnation technology into education, is both broad and multi-facetted. In order to help focus the papers and discussion we identified 7 themes: • Current developments in society and education influencing integration; • Teachers, their roles and concerns; • Learners, their expectations of and behaviour in an integrated environment; • Developments and concerns in the curriculum; • Successes and failures in existing practice; • Organisation and management of integrated environments; • Identification of social and political influences. Each author was invited to focus on one theme, and these remained strands throughout as can be seen from the short papers and focus group reports. The first and most significant concern therefore was to be clear about our notions of integration; what do we mean and how is this relevant? Our keynote paper from Cornu clearly marked out this debate by examining the notion of integration and alerting us to the fact that as long as the use of IT is still added to the curriculum, then integration has not yet begun.

Book Computers Children and Classrooms

Download or read book Computers Children and Classrooms written by Hilda W. Carmichael and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the creative uses of computers in elementary schools and their impact on student's confidence and self-esteem, student-student interaction, student-teacher interaction, male and female students, classroom management, the role of the teacher, special education, teacher training, teachers not involved in the study, and curricular areas such as computer literacy, learning Logo as a programming language, problem-solving and problem-creation, mathematics, oral communication, reading and writing, the arts, and values and the individual and society. Findings are based on intensive examinations of real classrooms over a 2-year period. A total of 433 students in 18 classrooms that involved 13 different teachers were studied; of these, 5 teachers and 40 students were involved in the study for 2 years. Classrooms had 1 to 5 computers over the entire school year, or students had access to a computer laboratory. Logo and word processing were studied extensively; the use of a graphics tablet and Musicland were explored for short periods. Findings indicate that the creative use of computers fosters the development of independent and original thinking and that an environment that encourages exploration leads to extensive social interaction among students; in addition, students become more willing to express, refine, or revise their ideas. A significantly greater proportion of students experienced an increase in their confidence and self-esteem if their teacher was able to give them autonomy over their learning. The impact on students' attention span and cognitive development in the special education classes was also significant. Appendices and selected references are provided. (Author/JB)

Book Microcomputers in Education

Download or read book Microcomputers in Education written by Morley Sage and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared to advise the Social Science Research Council, this report suggests funding priorities for a program of research in the field of educational applications of information technology, with special reference to the primary and secondary sectors. A discussion of the research program initiative context includes the contributions of governmental and government-supported agencies, research and development efforts in North America, and economic considerations. An examination of the need for research on new technology emphasizes its importance for providing an information base for curriculum design and a research base for the "education industry." Attention is drawn to the current lack of focus and direction in United Kingdom research and the increased risk of dissipation of effort created by a shortage of funds. Two research emphases are proposed: learning processes and information technology, and curriculum and the information society. Potential research problems are considered, and detailed outlines are provided for recommended programs of commissioned research. Fifty-eight references are listed. (Author/LMM)
