Book excerpt: This article explores differential hiring and retention practices across schools of choice using data gathered as part of a comprehensive evaluation of a large-scale school voucher program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A variety of interview, survey, and observation instruments are used to describe the challenges and strategies that 13 schools report regarding teacher recruitment and retention. We conclude that schools with established partnerships with institutions that share a religious or philosophical commitment experience the highest success with recruiting and retaining teachers. We describe the strategies used by these schools and make recommendations for improving teacher retention in schools of choice.

The purpose of the study is to identify the aspects of induction which impact first year teacher retention within a large urban district. The study was conducted in a large urban school system and focused on beginning teachers and their perceptions of the support they received. Beginning teachers were defined as individuals in their first year of teaching. The study examined those beginning teachers new to teaching during the 2013-2014 school year. These beginning teachers could've been hired at any point in the year. The study was guided by two sub-questions: What are the new teachers' perceptions of the informational, emotional, instructional support received, resource allocation, and the overall support provided to them during their participation in the teacher induction program at the district level and school level? What activities of the induction program are identified as being most and least valued by the new teacher in the induction program at the school and at the district? This study employed a sequential mixed method exploratory study design and was gathered in phases in which both qualitative and quantitative procedures were used. The research implemented the use of a survey, interviews and focus groups sequentially. In the first phase of the study, beginning teachers were surveyed online using Survey Monkey. The data was then analyzed using Survey Monkey and SPSS. In both the second and third phase of the study, beginning teachers were randomly selected from the original list of new hires. In phase two, the participants were invited to participate in an interview and in the third phase to participate in a focus group. Due to the role of the researcher, the interviews and focus groups were conducted by a research assistant. The findings indicate that beginning teachers who participate in a comprehensive induction program, which includes, professional development, a mentor at the school and from the district, and peer support are more likely to be retained adding continuity and expertise to a school district.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the perceptions and attitudes of 111 educators from two school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania regarding the factors that affect teacher retention. The research questions examined a collection of data from surveys, questionnaires, and interviews. Given the importance of recruiting and retaining quality teachers to better serve all students in education, this study provided specific insights from the perspectives of tenured teachers, non-tenured teachers, and administrator respondents. Analysis of the data revealed mixed perceptions for support from administrators, the learning community, and professional development as factors to support teacher retention in the year 2013. Unique factors emerged describing the connection to the current state of the economy as a driving force for the lack of available teaching positions. The researcher noted the three respondent groups' perceptions and attitudes were more similar than they were different. Tenured teacher respondents reported retention in some schools was falsely higher than it might be if more job opportunities were available for teaching positions. The researcher hypothesized that recent state accountabilities may have forced teachers and administrators to work together to meet the new challenges as a united force. Further quantitative research is warranted to fully ascertain the factors that affect teacher retention in connection to retirement patterns, transfer trends, attrition rates, and the impact of future mandated accountabilities for teacher supervision and evaluation.

Book excerpt: Achievement gaps by race and income have drawn attention to the higher rates of teacher attrition at schools serving disadvantaged students. There might be a vicious cycle: teachers are more likely to leave schools where the students are more difficult to work with, and the continual churn of teachers adversely affects school climate and student performance, making it even harder to retain teachers. Some evidence supports this hypothesis that school working conditions influence teacher turnover, but a better understanding of how different factors affect turnover, particularly as they interact with each other, would help policymakers looking for ways to increase teacher retention. In this study, I explore four categories of factors that might affect teacher turnover: teacher characteristics, including salary; demographic and behavioral characteristics of the school's student body; principal characteristics, such as teaching and administrative experience; and school administration characteristics that describe how the school is run, namely teachers' opinion of the school's administrators, the degree of teacher autonomy, and the strength of teacher influence over school policy. Using nationally-representative data about teacher transitions from the 1999-2000 school year to the 2000-2001 school year, I find that job satisfaction and many teacher characteristics are the factors most strongly associated with teacher turnover. School behavior problems and all three administration characteristics indirectly influence turnover via their effect on job satisfaction. Principal characteristics matter little, as do student race and poverty after controlling for teacher and administration variables.

Book excerpt: Retaining quality teachers is a global challenge for schools, particularly those in rural districts. Trapped in a revolving door of teacher hiring and replacement, these schools drain their districts of funds that could be better spent to improve teaching quality and student achievement. These high attrition rates result in inexperienced teachers, high economic costs as teachers must be continually hired and trained, and a lack of continuity that makes institutional development and planning difficult. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine factors that influence rural high school teachers' intent to leave teaching at their current school and to determine the factors influencing retention in their current rural high school. The study sites were five rural districts located near a big metropolitan city in Southeast Texas. An electronic survey was sent to 260 rural high school teachers in grades 9-12, who were purposively selected. All teachers had a minimum of six months teaching experience. Teacher perceptions were analyzed as possible indicators of teacher attrition in order to improve retention rate. The results from 176 respondents suggest that teacher job satisfaction significantly predicted teacher retention. Further analysis showed that teachers perceived administrator support as the most important factor in determining their decisions to stay followed by school climate and workplace conditions. Analysis based on percentages also indicated several factors that teachers perceived as reasons that caused their colleagues to leave. The top three reasons were better salary, accepting a teaching position in another school, and dissatisfaction with their jobs.

Although researchers have investigated the problem of teacher retention, few have studied factors that have influenced teacher retention in Title 1 high schools. The theories that guided this study included job demands-resources theory which analyzes employee well-being. This collective case study captured the insights of 10-15 current and former teachers at a Title I high school in a southern U.S. state. Data were collected through interviews, focus groups, and administrative documents and records. The researcher completed an analysis by organizing and coding the data in order to identify emerging themes and patterns. Understanding secondary teachers' perceptions of factors that impact teacher retention may help school leaders to plan and implement initiatives that reduce teacher attrition.
