Book excerpt: This study answered the following questions: What are some significant factors that influenced Idaho registered nurses' decisions to belong or not to belong to the American Nurses Association (ANA)/Idaho Nurses' Association (INA)? What are some significant demographic characteristics of ANA/INA members and non-members? A questionnaire was mailed to 660 registered nurses licensed by the Idaho Board of Nursing. The response rate for usable questionnaires was 39.2% (n=259) of which 32 were ANA/INA members and 227 non-members. Significant factors that promoted membership were the perception that ANA/INA membership has benefits that are important, a desire to keep current with nursing developments, a desire to keep current with political/legislative activities, opportunities for networking, the need to unite nurses in order to promote the nursing profession, the perception that membership is expected of a professional, and the opportunity for professional affiliation. Significant factors that influenced registered nurses not to join the ANA/INA were the cost of membership, lack of information about ANA/INA, distance to meetings, the lack of ANA/INA visibility, the lack of assistance in finding local ANA/INA units, the lack of advertisement of meeting times, and the perception that the ANA/INA fails to relate to the staff (working) nurse. The study also found that education, place of employment, and employment status have a significant effect on membership.

At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
