Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trauma be it; accident, abuse or war has happened in all our lives. This story will give you a deeper understanding of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and yes PTSD can be catchy. A candid and true story. Facing The Wall: A Mission - a never-ending journey, is recipient of The Kirkus Star from ~ Kirkus Reviews A star is assigned to books of remarkable merit, as determined by the impartial editors of Kirkus Reviews ~ Best of Indie Books 2010 www.ptsd.va.gov Book Review A Vietnam vet’s wife fights a long battle with her husband’s post-traumatic stress disorder in this poignant memoir. When her husband Jim, a 27-year-old Marine, returned intact from Vietnam in 1969, the author hoped that the couple could resume their lives as before. But although Jim bore no physical scars from his year in combat, his psychic wounds ran deep. Indeed, he hardly seemed to have left the war. He was plagued by nightmares and flashbacks in which he would call for medevac choppers or imagine himself surrounded by enemies. He veered between hypervigilance and catatonic staring, insisted on sitting with his back to a wall so he could survey his perimeter, and was spooked by both loud noises and silence; only the soothing sound of crickets could convince him there was nothing lying in wait. Over the decades, Jim’s illness took a heavy toll; he lost jobs and eventually became unemployable, withdrew emotionally from his wife and sons and endured periodic hospitalizations. (In the author’s telling, the Veterans Administration long ignored the Vietnam-era PTSD epidemic and was more a hindrance than a help in coping with Jim’s problems.) In her clear-eyed memoir, King draws a subtle, layered portrait of her lost soul of a husband. Sometimes he seems unreachable, sunk in memories of Vietnam and of his buddies who didn’t make it back (or in guilt over his own survival) and unable to carry out the simplest project; but he also devotedly serves as a volunteer fireman and pulls himself together to help his wife through crises and grief. It is as much the author’s story as Jim’s, as she struggles to hold the family together and fathom the stranger her husband has become, and to reclaim her own personality from the ravages of “secondary” PTSD. With America’s latest conflicts still generating victims, this is a very timely book: an anguished, unsparing, but ultimately hopeful view of the heartbreak of PTSD. An absorbing firsthand saga of war’s invisible casualties. -Kirkus Discoveries

Book Facing the Wall

Download or read book Facing the Wall written by Mary S. King and published by . This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceiving right or wrong, in reference to war, is not my call this is for our elected officials. But, when our veterans return from battle, it is the responsibility of our nation to help them adjust after war. These veterans and their families must be given all the help necessary to return to a normal existence. "Mary King, without any attempt of conjuring up any appearance of self pity, has captured the impact that post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has had on her life and those of her family." Jerry Albert "It was my pleasure to read this manuscript as it was being born. As Mary finished each chapter-I read and wanted more. The story is about the inner workings of an American family trying to adapt and keep it together. My husband is a Vietnam Vet also. Through Mary's words I saw correlations in my own life and finally understood. In reality this is a true love story with a twist." Mary Lou Canfield "As I began reading the story, I became so interested in what happened next that I found it difficult, at times, to put the book down. It is a wonderful story of love, frustration and down right courage by everyone involved." Carolyn Bruno " A compelling, page-turning story of an American family affected by a national issue." Ellen Albert Till war and trauma end understanding must begin. Mary S. King

Book excerpt: Remember Goliad! was as famous a rallying cry during the Texas Revolution as Remember the Alamo! Despite the disparity in casualties (Goliads were over twice those of the Alamo), relatively little is remembered about the grisly massacre of an estimated 490 Texan and American prisoners of war by order of Santa Anna on Palm Sunday, March 27, 1865. Killing Fannin is not only about the execution of the Texas commander at Goliad. It is a recounting of the decisions leading to his defeat by a superior Mexican army. Overriding Fannins death is the tragic, cruel massacre of his men, most of them volunteers from the US who cared enough for Texan independence that they fought and lost their lives for it. Remember Goliad!

Book excerpt: The dramatic changes that have taken place both in global society and in the church have implications for how the church does missions in the twenty-first century. These trends include the rise of postmodernism, the spiritual decline in the West and the advance of the gospel in the rest of the world, and the impact of technology on society and missions. The Changing Face of World Missions is for the mission-minded church leader or lay person who wants to understand these trends. Each chapter identifies and evaluates a trend, examines it in light of Scripture, and proposes a practical response. Important terms are defined, and sidebars help readers think through the issues on their own.
