Book Facing the Dragon

Download or read book Facing the Dragon written by Robert L. Moore and published by Chiron Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured around a series of lectures presented at the Jung Institute of Chicago in a program entitled "Jungian Psychology and Human Spirituality: Liberation from Tribalism in Religious Life," this book-length essay attacks the related problems of human evil, spiritual narcissism, secularism and ritual, and grandiosity. Robert Moore dares to insist that we stop ignoring these issues and provides clear-sighted guidance for where to start and what to expect. Along the way, he pulls together many important threads from recent findings in theology, spirituality, and psychology and brings us to a point where we can conceive of embarking on a corrective course. Traditional doctrinal and historical interpretation both rely heavily on rational analysis. But from the disciples at Emmaus to the beginnings of the present century, it has been the impact of scripture upon the human heart that has changed human lives. In recent decades, this impact has been strengthened by advances in linguistic and literary theory, by such disparate influences as feminism, structuralism, Jungianism, deconstructionism, the analysis of archaic imagery and myth, the recovery of Gnostic texts, and finally an openness to pluralism, whether ethnic, geographic, religious, or interpretive. All of these factors are treated here with a brevity and comprehensiveness which convincingly show that the reader of scripture has a creative and not merely passive role. "If you would understand the deepest roots of terrorism, greed, and religious fanaticism, read Facing the Dragon. But be forewarned: you may find some offshoots in your own garden."-June Singer, Jungian analyst, author of Boundaries of the Soul Robert Moore, Phd was an internationally recognized psychotherapist and consultant in private practice in Chicago. He was considered one of the leading therapists specializing in psychotherapy with men because of his discovery of the Archetypal Dynamics of the Masculine Self (King, Warrior, Magician, Lover). He served as Distinguished Service Professor of Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Spirituality at the Graduate Center of the Chicago Theological Seminary, and has served as a Training Analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. He is Co-founder of the Chicago Center for Integrative Psychotherapy.

Book Perception of Faces Objects and Scenes

Download or read book Perception of Faces Objects and Scenes written by Mary A. Peterson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-22 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a barrage of photons, we readily and effortlessly recognize the faces of our friends, and the familiar objects and scenes around us. However, these tasks cannot be simple for our visual systems--faces are all extremely similar as visual patterns, and objects look quite different when viewed from different viewpoints. How do our visual systems solve these problems? The contributors to this volume seek to answer this question by exploring how analytic and holistic processes contribute to our perception of faces, objects, and scenes. The role of parts and wholes in perception has been studied for a century, beginning with the debate between Structuralists, who championed the role of elements, and Gestalt psychologists, who argued that the whole was different from the sum of its parts. This is the first volume to focus on the current state of the debate on parts versus wholes as it exists in the field of visual perception by bringing together the views of the leading researchers. Too frequently, researchers work in only one domain, so they are unaware of the ways in which holistic and analytic processing are defined in different areas. The contributors to this volume ask what analytic and holistic processes are like; whether they contribute differently to the perception of faces, objects, and scenes; whether different cognitive and neural mechanisms code holistic and analytic information; whether a single, universal system can be sufficient for visual-information processing, and whether our subjective experience of holistic perception might be nothing more than a compelling illusion. The result is a snapshot of the current thinking on how the processing of wholes and parts contributes to our remarkable ability to recognize faces, objects, and scenes, and an illustration of the diverse conceptions of analytic and holistic processing that currently coexist, and the variety of approaches that have been brought to bear on the issues.

Book Advances in Geomechanics Research and Application for Deep Unconventional Reservoirs

Download or read book Advances in Geomechanics Research and Application for Deep Unconventional Reservoirs written by Peng Tan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-11-11 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep unconventional oil and gas reservoirs (such as shale oil/gas, tight oil/gas, coalbed methane (CBM), oil shale, etc.) are commonly characterized by geological and structural complexity, increased formation temperature and pressure, and complex in-situ stress fields. Geomechanics research is helpful to understand the in-situ stress of complex structures, faults and natural fracture systems in deep blocks. Field practice shows that insufficient geomechanics understanding can easily result in low drilling efficiency, long construction period, frequent occurrence of complex situations, and unsatisfactory fracturing effects. In recent years, geomechanics applied to drilling, completion, hydraulic fracturing, and production in unconventional reservoirs has achieved great progress, producing various advanced experimental and numerical approaches and applications. However, as the buried depth increases, the complicated geology conditions make it more and more difficult for the engineering reconstructions, which poses a great threat to the efficient development of deep resources. New knowledge and understandings of geomechanics are urgently needed to guide the development of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs, and the related theory, experiment and simulation studies are rapidly developing.

Book Merleau Ponty and the Face of the World

Download or read book Merleau Ponty and the Face of the World written by Glen A. Mazis and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assesses Merleau-Ponty’s contribution to ethics as calling for a poetic interplay between perception and imagination, and between silence and solidarity, that reveals our place in the world, and our obligations to ourselves and others. Before his death in 1961, Merleau-Ponty worried about what he saw as humanity’s increasingly self-enclosed and manipulative way of experiencing self, others, and the world—the consequences of which remain apparent in our destructive inability to connect with others within and across cultures. In Merleau-Ponty and the Face of the World, Glen A. Mazis provides an overall consideration of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy that brings out what he sees as a corrective prescription for ethical reorientation that is fundamental to Merleau-Ponty’s thought. Mazis begins by analyzing the key role that silence plays for Merleau-Ponty as a positive, powerful presence rather than a lack or emptiness, and then builds on this to explore the ethical significance of the face-to-face encounter in his thought as one of solidarity rather than obligation. In the last part of the book, Mazis traces the development of what he calls “physiognomic imagination” in Merleau-Ponty’s work. This understanding of imagination is not fancy or make-believe, but rather brings out the depths of perceptual meaning and leads to an appreciation of poetic language as the key to revitalizing both ethics and ontology. Drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s published works, lecture notes, unpublished writings, and the work of many phenomenologists and Merleau-Ponty scholars, Mazis also offers incisive readings of Merleau-Ponty’s work as it relates to that of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Gaston Bachelard, and Emmanuel Levinas.
