Download or read book Bitumens in Ore Deposits written by John Parnell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the occurrence, interpretation and significance of bitumens (hydrocarbon residues) in ore deposits. Bitumens occur with a wide variety of ores, including deposits of base metals, mercury, uranium, gold and other precious metals. The papers included reflect this variety of bitumen occurrences and the potential for obtaining useful data from them. The contributions are written by acknowledged experts in this field, who cover analytical techniques and case studies using diverse petrographic and geochemical approaches which will give ore geologists and geochemists an excellent insight into the interpretation of bitumens during mineral exploration. The large number of plates in particular will help the non-specialist to make good use of the volume through the application to new deposits. This is the most comprehensive set of contributions published on a subject of growing interest; at a time when explorationists are increasingly recognising the occurrence of bitumens in ore deposits and the fact that the evolution of mineralising fluids and hydrocarbon fluids may be closely interlinked.

Book Sedimentologic Analysis of Cores from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and the Lower Permian Cutler Formation Lisbon Valley Utah

Download or read book Sedimentologic Analysis of Cores from the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation and the Lower Permian Cutler Formation Lisbon Valley Utah written by Russell F. Dubiel and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five uranium exploration cores from Lisbon Valley in the Paradox Basin of southeastern Utah provide examples of sedimentary structures and lithofacies from the Lower Permian Cutler Formation and the overlying Moss Back Member of the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation. The Cutler Formation consists of reddish-brown to purple, arkosic sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone of fluvial and floodplain origin interbedded with reddish-orange sandstone and mud-stone deposited in sabkha, eolian dune, and sand-sheet settings. The colors are indicative of the respective depositional settings. An erosional nconformity separates the top of the Cutler from the overlying Moss Back Member of the Chinle Formation. The Moss Back consists of greenish- to bluish-gray limestone-nodule conglomerate, siliciclastic sandstone, and siltstone deposited in high-energy fluvial channels and crevasse splays and on adjacent levees and floodplains. The drab colors of the Moss Back reflect the high organic-carbon content of strata deposited and preserved below the water table. These five cores record eolian and fluvial sedimentary structures and lithofacies sequences not well preserved in outcrops, they provide the basis for interpretation and comparison of depositional environments from lithofacies analysis in core and outcrop studies, and they establish the sedimentologic background for future petrographic and geochemical research on cores and outcrops from the Lisbon Valley area.

Book Sequence stratigraphy of the Jurassic Lowermost Cretaceous Hettangian Berriasian of the North Sea region

Download or read book Sequence stratigraphy of the Jurassic Lowermost Cretaceous Hettangian Berriasian of the North Sea region written by P. Copestake and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence stratigraphy has become a powerful tool in the basin analysis of the North Sea Basin, and will continue to play an important role in the maximization of the remaining hydrocarbon potential of the region, whilst also supporting the energy transition in carbon capture and storage projects with Jurassic storage units. This Memoir provides a long-awaited, comprehensive documentation of Jurassic to lowermost Cretaceous sequence stratigraphy of the region (UK, Norway, Denmark and adjacent areas). The volume is amply illustrated by numerous well log displays, core images, seismic lines, chronostratigraphic diagrams and outcrop photographs. Individual chapters discuss the historical usage of sequence stratigraphy in the North Sea Jurassic, sequence stratigraphic concepts and models, application in hydrocarbon field development, definition of stratigraphic traps, well sequence interpretation methodology and controls on sequence development. To complete the volume there are further chapters on North Sea Jurassic lithostratigraphy and its relation to sequence stratigraphy, and descriptions of the biozones used to characterize and correlate the sequences.

Book Linking Diagenesis to Sequence Stratigraphy

Download or read book Linking Diagenesis to Sequence Stratigraphy written by Sadoon Morad and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence stratigraphy is a powerful tool for the prediction of depositional porosity and permeability, but does not account for the impact of diagenesis on these reservoir parameters. Therefore, integrating diagenesis and sequence stratigraphy can provide a better way of predicting reservoir quality. This special publication consists of 19 papers (reviews and case studies) exploring different aspects of the integration of diagenesis and sequence stratigraphy in carbonate, siliciclastic, and mixed carbonate-siliciclastic successions from various geological settings. This book will be of interest to sedimentary petrologists aiming to understand the distribution of diagenesis in siliciclastic and carbonate successions, to sequence stratigraphers who can use diagenetic features to recognize and verify interpreted key stratigraphic surfaces, and to petroleum geologists who wish to develop more realistic conceptual models for the spatial and temporal distribution of reservoir quality. This book is part of the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) Special Publications. The Special Publications from the IAS are a set of thematic volumes edited by specialists on subjects of central interest to sedimentologists. Papers are reviewed and printed to the same high standards as those published in the journal Sedimentology and several of these volumes have become standard works of reference.

Book Triassic Jurassic Rifting

Download or read book Triassic Jurassic Rifting written by Warren Manspeizer and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive field studies on the African and North American plates during this past decade have yielded a wealth of new data and ideas about rift basins and the origin of passive margins. New surface and subsurface basins have been identified; fossils abound in strata that only recently were considered barren; oil exploration is being actively pursued in continental strata of the Richmond-Taylorsville, Sanford and Newark basins, Late Triassic marine strata have been identified in Georges Bank off the coast of Massachusetts, and the roles of wrench tectonics, successor basins and listric normal faults have challenged the classical view that these are simple extensional basins. This two part work brings together representative examples of these studies. It is not intended as an exhaustive synthesis of the subject, but rather a vehicle to present new data, new ideas and alternative views. Some of the papers present regional summaries, others attempt to relate local features to regional questions, while others describe modern rift basins as possible analogs of early Mesozoic basins. Geologic data from the Atlantic passive margins record that continental rifting of central Pangaea occurred during the latest Triassic-earliest Jurassic (Liassic), and that sea-floor spreading probably began no later than the Middle Jurassic. The primary subject of this book focuses on the Triassic-Jurassic rifting events that led to the breakup of Pangaea and the opening of the central Atlantic Ocean. Whereas other treatises have focused on the origin of the passive margins, inferred primarily from geophysical data of the offshore basins, this volume primarily and uniquely focuses on land-based field studies of the onshore synrift basins. Offshore studies of synrift basins are also included and add substantially to our understanding of the breakup. However, the onshore data base, while complementary, is different, thus providing researchers with a different insight to the questions at hand. The book is organized into four sections. Section I, Pangaean Plate in Time and Space, first locates Pangaea in space and then places the Triassic basins within an historical context on the Alleghanian-Variscan Orogens. Section 2, the offshore and onshore basins of the North American and African Plates, comprises about 70% of all papers in this book, and includes papers on structural geology, petrology, paleontology, sedimentation, organic geochemistry, vulcanism and mineral resources. Section 3, Related Mesozoic Atlantic Rift Basins, includes papers on Iberia, Western Europe, the Benue Trough and Brazil. The final section of the book, Analogs, includes the rift basins of East Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Elat (Aqaba), the Dead Sea and the Rio Grande. The book is richly illustrated throughout with figures, photographs, tables and fold-out maps, including nine in full colour.
