Book In Vivo Facial Tissue Depth Measurements for Children and Adults

Download or read book In Vivo Facial Tissue Depth Measurements for Children and Adults written by MH. Manhein and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reports results of a facial tissue depth measurements project conducted over a two-year period on a modern sample of children and adults of both sexes and varying ages and races. The purpose of this research was to increase available tissue depth data for children and update facial tissue depth measurements for American adults. Most volunteers for this project were patients or visitors to the pediatric clinic at the Louisiana State University Medical Center, School of Dentistry, in New Orleans, Using state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, we scanned 551 children and 256 adults at 19 points across the face. Thirteen of the scanned points were traditional landmarks while six others were areas not measured by previous researchers or were points for which very little data exist for both children and adults. For this presentation, we analyzed data for 515 children and 197 adults. Results of Pearson's correlations, analysis of variance, and paired t-tests indicate that age, sex, and race are significant factors when considering tissue depth means for different measurement locations across the human face. These new standards are compared to the work of other researchers. Our results provide valuable assistance in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional facial reproductions and superimpositions.

Book excerpt: Available facial tissue thickness standards for facial feature reconstruction are based on adult measurements. Mid-facial tissue thicknesses for male and female white adolescents are presented here. Measurements were taken from lateral radiographs produced in an orthodontic practice. Statistical analysis indicates that age, sex, and to some extent, dental occlusion pattern are factors that should be taken into account when attempting facial feature reconstructions.

Book In Vivo Facial Tissue Depth Measurements for White British Children

Download or read book In Vivo Facial Tissue Depth Measurements for White British Children written by CM. Wilkinson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of a study of facial tissue depth measurement in White British children of both sexes, aged between 11 and 18 years. The purpose of this research was to increase the information available upon tissue depth data for children, primarily for use in forensic facial reconstruction. Facial tissue depths were measured at 21 anatomical points using ultrasonic echo-location. The mid-philtral, upper lip border and lower lip border points showed consistently larger tissue depths in the males than the females, and the zygomatic attachment showed consistently larger tissue depths in the females than the males. The males showed a general increase in tissue depth with an increase in age at all the mid-line facial points and the cheek points. The females showed increased tissue depth with age at all the points except the infra-orbital, lateral orbital, mid-zygomatic arch and mid-mandibular points. A table of mean tissue depths was developed for males and females divided into two-yearly age groups.

Book Biomedical Visualisation

Download or read book Biomedical Visualisation written by Paul M. Rea and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book explores the use of technology to enable us to visualise the life sciences in a more meaningful and engaging way. It will enable those interested in visualisation techniques to gain a better understanding of the applications that can be used in visualisation, imaging and analysis, education, engagement and training. The reader will be able to explore the utilisation of technologies from a number of fields to enable an engaging and meaningful visual representation of the biomedical sciences. This use of technology-enhanced learning will be of benefit for the learner, trainer and faculty, in patient care and the wider field of education and engagement. This second volume on Biomedical Visualisation will explore the use of a variety of visualisation techniques to enhance our understanding of how to visualise the body, its processes and apply it to a real world context. It is divided into three broad categories – Education; Craniofacial Anatomy and Applications and finally Visual Perception and Data Visualization. In the first four chapters, it provides a detailed account of the history of the development of 3D resources for visualisation. Following on from this will be three major case studies which examine a variety of educational perspectives in the creation of resources. One centres around neuropsychiatric education, one is based on gaming technology and its application in a university biology curriculum, and the last of these chapters examines how ultrasound can be used in the modern day anatomical curriculum. The next three chapters focus on a complex area of anatomy, and helps to create an engaging resource of materials focussed on craniofacial anatomy and applications. The first of these chapters examines how skulls can be digitised in the creation of an educational and training package, with excellent hints and tips. The second of these chapters has a real-world application related to forensic anatomy which examines skulls and soft tissue landmarks in the creation of a database for Cretan skulls, comparing it to international populations. The last three chapters present technical perspetives on visual perception and visualisation. By detailing visual perception, visual analytics and examination of multi-modal, multi-parametric data, these chapters help to understand the true scientific meaning of visualisation. The work presented here can be accessed by a wide range of users from faculty and students involved in the design and development of these processes, to those developing tools and techniques to enable visualisation in the sciences.

Book Volume Graphics

  • Author : Min Chen
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Volume Graphics written by Min Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Min Chen, Arie E. Kaufman and Roni Yage/ Volume graphics is concerned with graphics scenes defined in volume data types, where a model is specified by a mass of points instead of a collection of surfaces. The underlying mathematical definition of such a model is a set of scalar fields, which define the geometrical and physical properties of every point in three dimensional space. As true 3D representations, volume data types possess more descriptive power than surface data types, and are morphologically closer to many high-level modelling schemes in traditional surface graphics such as parametric surfaces, implicit surfaces and volume sweeping. The past decade has witnessed significant advances in volume visualisation, driven mainly by applications such as medical imaging and scientific computation. The work in this field has produced a number of volume rendering methods that enable 3D information in a volumetric dataset to be selectively rendered into 2D images. With modern computer hardware, such a process can easily be performed on an ordinary workstation. More importantly, volume-based rendering offers a consistent solution to the primary deficiencies of the traditional surface-based rendering, which include its inability to encapsulate the internal description of a model, and the difficulties in rendering amorphous phenomena. The emergence of volume-based techniques has not only broadened the extent of graphics applications, but also brought computer graphics closer to other scientific and engineering disciplines, including image processing, computer vision, finite element analysis and rapid prototyping.
