Download or read book The Body in Language written by Matthias Brenzinger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Body in Language: Comparative studies of Linguistic Embodiment provides new insights into the theory of linguistic embodiment in its universal and cultural aspects. The contributions of the volume offer theoretical reflections on grammaticalization, lexical semantics, philosophy, multimodal communication and - by discussing metaphorization and metonymy in figurative language - on cognitive linguistics in general. Case studies contribute first-hand data on embodiment from more than 15 languages and present findings on the body in language in diverse cultures from various continents. Embodiment fundamentally underlies human conceptualization and the present discussions reveal a wide range of target domains in conceptual transfers with the body as the source domain.
Download or read book The Great Facepalm written by Phillip McCarron and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever taken a long, hard look at today's society, slapped your hand over your face, and wondered how we've made it this far as a species? In The Great Facepalm: The Farce of 21st Century Normality, author Phillip McCarron recounts the sordid state of our culture, observing how society has begun to parody its own preposterous stereotypes as it plummets to the same grisly end as the fallen civilizations of yesteryear. Through a blend of brazen humor and philosophical insight, humanity's corrosive tendencies are made readily apparent. On the more superficial matters in life, such as the absurdity of the bar scene, soulless fame-junkies, and our toxic obsession with social media, the author provides an amusing commentary on our deluded self-image and the gross compulsion to over-share our over-hyped achievements. Tackling the more grievous issues plaguing our society, he also weighs in on political dysfunction, the indignity of shameless consumerism, and the growing disconnect between education and employment, providing a stark reminder that the circle-jerk of life is all knuckles and fingernails. This collection of articles offers up the unique perspective of one man's observations, musings, and opinions on the ridiculousness of everyday life. Analyzing hot-button social issues, and exposing the follies of an all-too-familiar cast of characters, it skirts the line between hilarious and grim, as the tragedy of reality is as manic as it is depressing. So prepare to have your belief systems probed, your sense of humor stretched to the limit, and your snow globe smashed with a sledgehammer on an enlightening journey through the world's fractured, collective psyche.

Download or read book The Hybrid Face written by Massimo Leone and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and interdisciplinary volume explores the contemporary semiotic dimensions of the face from both scientific and sociocultural perspectives, putting forward several traditions, aspects, and signs of the human utopia of creating a hybrid face. The book semiotically delves into the multifaceted realm of the digital face, exploring its biological and social functions, the concept of masks, the impact of COVID-19, AI systems, digital portraiture, symbolic faces in films, viral communication, alien depictions, personhood in video games, online intimacy, and digital memorials. The human face is increasingly living a life that is not only that of the biological body but also that of its digital avatar, spread through a myriad of new channels and transformable through filters, post-productions, digital cosmetics, all the way to the creation of deepfakes. The digital face expresses new and largely unknown meanings, which this book explores and analyzes through an interdisciplinary but systematic approach. The volume will interest researchers, scholars, and advanced students who are interested in digital humanities, communication studies, semiotics, visual studies, visual anthropology, cultural studies, and, broadly speaking, innovative approaches about the meaning of the face in present-day digital societies.

Download or read book Digilect written by Ágnes Veszelszki and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high degree of internet penetration and its social (and linguistic) effects evidently influence how people, and especially the highly susceptible younger generations, use language. The primary aim of the book is not only to identify the characteristic features of the digital language variety (this has already been done by several works) but to examine how digital communication affects the language of other mediums of communication: orality, handwritten texts, digitally created but not digitally perceived, that is printed texts, including in particular advertisements (which quickly respond to linguistic change). Naturally, the book presents the characteristics of the digital language variety (and coins the term digilect) but only to give a framework to the impact analysis. It is important to document changes in progress and thus direct attention to potential outcomes. The current linguistic change is different from previous ones primarily in its speed and form of spreading, and it not only brings innovative grammatical forms and writing/spelling solutions but may also have far-reaching cultural and educational consequences in the long run.
Download or read book Atheism Religion and Life A Layman s Perspective written by Brian Hinkley and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that lays bare the fallacy of religion. It makes an unmistakable statement on the personal effect religion has on the individual; and the damage inflicted on the cultural, political and economic life of the world's population. Arguments for and against religion, atheism and the philosophy of life are examined, but always geared towards the layman. Humour, and irreverent commentary, assists the reader to question Bible events, in a fashion that helps the ordinary person to understand religion from an atheist's perspective. The bogus claims made by religions, are dissected by the clever use of stories, quotes, and examining relevant sections of the Bible. Veiled sections of the Bible that most of the public either have never heard of, or don't believe exist are exposed. A provocative read to challenge both the religious and non-religious. It is concise and understandable. Agree or disagree, one thing all critics agree upon, it will make you think about life and religion.

But when Cal Bradley shows up as Santa, he’s the opposite of what she expects. First, he’s late. Second, he comes from straight off the mountain so his fake beard looks windswept and he’s wearing ski boots instead of polished black boots. And third, Santa is not supposed to have abs like that. There’s trouble from the start as realistic, business owner Macy, and optimistic, fun-loving kids’ ski instructor Cal, disagree on everything from the Naughty and Nice List to the ingredients for sugar cookies. Every time Cal agrees to deliver an extravagant gift to a child, Macy tries to pull him down to earth. Macy believes Cal can’t follow through on his word, but the more he spreads his holiday cheer, the more she wants to believe in him. With a little Christmas magic, maybe Cal can teach Macy the best gift of all is love.
