Book The New D cor

Download or read book The New D cor written by Ralph Rugoff and published by Hayward Gallery Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACEThese fleeting sketches are all republished by kind permission of the Editor of the DAILY NEWS, in which paper they appeared. They amount to no more than a sort of sporadic diary-a diary recording one day in twenty which happened to stick in the fancy-the only kind of diary the author has ever been able to keep. Even that diary he could only keep by keeping it in public, for bread and cheese. But trivial as are the topics they are not utterly without a connecting thread of motive. As the reader's eye strays, with hearty relief, from these pages, it probably alights on something, a bed-post or a lamp-post, a window blind or a wall.

Book The Prize of Success

  • ISBN : 3839471915

Download or read book The Prize of Success written by Jonas Berthod and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the small world of Swiss graphic design, prizes such as the Swiss Design Awards (SDA) are followed closely. The winners' works are admired, envied and emulated. The generous prize money allows designers to launch their careers and focus on lesser paid but critically recognised work. Awards thus play the role of bellwethers of the scene. However, criticisms inevitably arise. Speaking in hushed tones, designers speculate as to why a colleague won over another. Rumours have it that jury members favour their inner circles and exclude competitors. Analysing this universe in detail, Jonas Berthod retraces the recent history of the SDA and the emergence of a new design culture in Switzerland.

  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Terminal 5 written by Rachel K. Ward and published by Sternberg Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It would make a beautiful ruin." Eero Saarinen Terminal 5 was a group show curated by Rachel K. Ward at Eero Saarinen's landmark 1962 TWA Terminal at JFK Airport. Originally scheduled to run from 28 September 2004 - 31 January 2005, the Port Authority closed the exhibition after the "controversial" opening night party. Initiated as a form of "dedication to the building" the exhibition explored themes drawn from the history and nature of travel, and responded to the significance of the architecture itself. The catalogue is a secondary site for participating artists, writers and critics to engage with ideas raised by the exhibition and air travel. Designed by David Reinfurt, ORG, it is divided into three sections: architectural history, exhibition information, and air travel related essays, and balances extensive visual material related to the site and the exhibition with critical and historical texts. The show included works by Vanessa Beecroft, Douglas Coupland, Kendell Geers, Dan Graham, Toland Grinnell, Fabrice Gygi, Mark Handforth, Jenny Holzer, Ryoji Ikeda, Just Another Rich Kid, Matthieu Laurette, Jonas Mekas, Aleksandra Mir, Jonathan Monk, Tom Sachs, Anri Sala, Tobias Wong, et al. Contributors Paul Andreu, J.G. Ballard, Glenn O'Brien, Nicolas Bourriaud, Douglas Coupland, Ben Davis, Wendy Dorsett, Dave Eggers, Norman Foster, Dan Graham, Erin Hogan, Ana Honingman, J.T. LeRoy, Hesse McGraw, Jonas Mekas, David Pascoe, Nina Rappaport, Susan Saarinen, Brian Sholis, Robert Smithson, Marc-Olivier Wahler, Andrew Lee Walker, Rachel K. Ward, Lori Waxman, et al.

Book excerpt: At Dwell, we're staging a minor revolution. We think that it's possible to live in a house or apartment by a bold modern architect, to own furniture and products that are exceptionally well designed, and still be a regular human being. We think that good design is an integral part of real life. And that real life has been conspicuous by its absence in most design and architecture magazines.

Book Children as Place Makers

Download or read book Children as Place Makers written by Simon Unwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in three further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy. As children we make places spontaneously: on the beach, in woodland, around our homes... Those places are evidence of a natural language of architecture we all share. Beginning with the child as seed and agent of the places it makes, initial sections of Children as Place-makers illustrate the key ‘verbs’ that drive that natural language of architecture. Later sections look at the core importance of the circle of place, how as children we are drawn to inhabit boxes, and the narrative possibilities that arise when place is linked with imagination. The principal messages of this Notebook are that it is by place-making we make sense of the space of the world in which we live, and that the first step in becoming a professional architect is to re-awaken the innate architect inside each of us.
