Book Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors

Download or read book Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not much more than a decade has passed since the appearance of the outstanding handbook, Catecholamines, edited by BLASCHKO and MUSCHOLL, in the series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. However, this extremely well organized volume dealt mainly with the origin, molecular actions, and fate of the naturally occuring catecholamines. It was felt that a separate volume should be dedicated to the remarkable and exciting progress made in the field of agents influencing the adrenergic system, both in physiologic and pharmacologic respect. The editor of the present volume considers himself lucky to have been able to persuade a number of eminent specialists to collaborate. The main concept of the present handbook is a systematic approach to the various effects of adrenergic activators and inhibitors starting with the chemistry and structure actitivity relationship, followed by the evaluation of adrenergic activators and inhibitors, and discussing their mode of action. The most voluminous part is the chapter dealing with the systemic pharma cology of these agents analyzing the effects on the central nervous system, on the autonomic nervous system, on the cardiovascular, the respiratory, the digestive, the endocrine system, on the skeletal muscle, and on metabolism. Kinetics and bio transformation, further toxic effects are discussed in the following chapters. A special chapter on clinical features concludes the monograph.

Book Receptors and Recognition

Download or read book Receptors and Recognition written by P. Cuatrecasas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new se ries is concerned with intercellular communication and recognition. It is now widely appreciated that these processes playa crucial role in virtually all biological systems and functions. These encompass fertilisation, embryonic development, infectious interactions, the activity of the nervous system, the regulation of growth and develop ment by hormones and the immune response to foreign or 'non-self antigens. Historically as described in the first review in this volume, the general concept of cell-associated receptors as the molecular entity primarily responsible for the specificity of signal recognition arose independently in the fields of immunology, pharmacology and developmental biology. From an early stage the analogy between cellular recognition and the discriminatory activity of antibodies and enzymes was emphasised. A vital conceptual advance, expressed most c1early by Linus Pauling and Paul Weiss, was the idea that non-covalent molecular interactions (of proteins in particular) were responsible forbiological specificity in in general. In the last decade several major advances have led to a new level of understanding of the molecular basis of cellular recognition. In several systems (in particular with neurotransmitters, hormones and antigens) it is possible to direct1y demonstrate the existence of receptors - associated in each case with the cell surface. These studies have been paralleled by equally important insights into the general structure and organisation of cell membranes and the possible ways in which signals arriving from the 'outside' can be transduced across the cell surface membrane to induce or regulate the cell's programmed responses.

Book Thyroid Autoimmunity

  • ISBN : 146130945X

Download or read book Thyroid Autoimmunity written by A. Pinchera and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1956, three groups independently reported evidence that some thyroid disease appearing spontaneously in humans or experimentally induced in animals are related to autoimmune processes. The interval between these landmark discoveries and the present has witnessed a remarkable and continuing growth of both knowledge and concepts concerning the mechanisms of immune regulation, the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid diseases, and their clinical and laboratory manifestations. More importantly knowledge of thyroid autoimmunity has, in many respects, comprised the vanguard of an ever increasing appreciation and understanding of autoimmune diseases in general. On November 24-26 1986, an International Symposium on Thyroid Autoimmunity was held in Pisa. Its purpose was to commemorate the birth of thyroid autoimmunity as a scientific discipline, to summarize current knowledge and concepts in this area, and where possible, to anticipate areas of opportunity for the future - hence the theme of the Symposium, Memories and Perspectives. To open the meeting, the Magnifico Rettore (Chancellor) of the University of Pisa granted special Awards to Dr. Deborah Doniach, Dr. Ivan Roitt, and Dr. Noel R. Rose, who published the first fundamental studies in the field of thyroid autoimmunity, and to Dr. Duncan G. Adams, whose discovery of the long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) opened the door to our current understanding of the pathogenesis of Graves' disease. During the meeting thirty plenary lectures were presented.

Book Exploring the Vertebrate Central Cholinergic Nervous System

Download or read book Exploring the Vertebrate Central Cholinergic Nervous System written by Alexander G. Karczmar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if the “weapons of mass destruction” (WMD) and, among them, stocks of organoph- phorus (OP) agents (also referred to as war gases and nerve gases) were not found in Iraq following the US-Iraq war, the relative ease with which these substances can be made from harmless precursors and the low cost of their manufacture will continue to fascinate pow- hungry, ruthless dictators, as well as multinational and international terrorists, particularly as the close relationship between the OP agents and useful insecticides makes it easy to disguise the importation and purchase of small amounts of the precursors. Indeed, the use by Saddam Hussein of a nerve gas against the Kurds and his possible employment of the OP agents during his war with Iran, and the Sarin attack in the Tokyo underground by an extremist religious set magnetized the world with respect to the OP drugs. As these drugs exert their toxicity via their cholinergic action on the nervous, particularly central nervous, system, it is no wonder that the research in the cholinergic ? eld attracts, and merits, our intense attention. These considerations underlie the signi? cance of this book, as Alex Karczmar devotes an entire chapter of Exploring the Vertebrate Central Cholinergic Nervous System to anticholinest- ases (antiChEs), and as he is an acknowledged expert in the ? eld of cholinergic toxicity as well as a consultant to the Surgeon General of the U. S. Army.
