Book Ezra Nehemiah and Esther

Download or read book Ezra Nehemiah and Esther written by T. Witton Davies and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther: Introduction Revised Version With Notes Maps and Index Ezra and Nehemiah are treated as one book with the name 'Ezra' in the Talmud, the Massorah, in the LXX (B) (Esdras (B)), in Josephus, and in the early Christian Church. Origen in his Hexapla was the first to divide this one work into two, but the first to give the second part the name 'Nehemiah' was Jerome, according to Sayce and Ryle, though Baudissin says it is due to late MSS. of the LXX. In the Jewish Canon, as represented by our Hebrew Bible, Ezra-Nehemiah and Chronicles (reckoned as one book) are the two last books in the third division (Ketubim or writings, also called Hagiographa), and therefore in the Hebrew Old Testament. In the English, Welsh, &c., Bible, Ezra and Nehemiah, counted as two books, appear after Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, and before Esther. It is impossible to say for certain when Ezra-Nehemiah was received into the Canon of the Old Testament. Ryle thinks that every book now in the Ketubim must have found its way into the Jewish Canon between 160-109 B. C. His evidence for this conclusion is cumulative, but it is by no means decisive. He does not advance a single argument that settles the matter beyond controversy, nor can the sum total of his arguments be said to do this. It cannot be proved definitely that our Hebrew Bible was recognized as canonical by the Synod of Jamnia (A. D. 90). Book The Communicator s Commentary

Download or read book The Communicator s Commentary written by Mark D. Roberts and published by W Publishing Group. This book was released on 1993 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ezra and Nehemiah address issues that make the front pages of our newspapers - and they speak to the yearnings of our hearts". This is why the author of this volume, Dr. Mark Roberts enthusiastically encourages Christian communicators to explore these somewhat obscure Old Testament texts. For much the same reason the author believes modern pastors and Bible students can benefit from careful study in the often-maligned book of Esther. He emphasizes the book's contemporary relevance, stating, "Esther encourages us to grapple with pressing moral issues in light of God's wisdom". As a pastor with a passion for communicating God's truths to young people and to the unchurched in our world, Dr. Roberts shares his personal success in using the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther to address contemporary needs. Not only is this commentary well-written and carefully researched, but, as an added plus, Dr. Roberts' deep faith and his dynamic relationship with Christ shine through every page. As Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie says in the editor's preface, the author of this fine volume "is vulnerable, open and honest about how the Scriptures he explains have impacted his own life". Marked by the excellence you have come to expect in the Communicator's Commentary series, this latest volume wrestles with difficult questions, such as the rightful place of Esther in the canon and the puzzling roles of Sheshbazzar and Zerubbabel; provides a wide range of quotations and anecdotes from modern and classical sources to help us communicate God's message today; and offers balance of exegetical, historical, and literary analysis along with penetrating applications of the truths reflected in these texts. "As communicators",Dr. Ogilvie says, "we all long for those magnificent moments in our preparation when we are gripped with an inspired insight into a passage of Scripture that prompts us to exclaim, 'that will preach!' We are filled with excitement and enthusiasm to share what we've discovered. This is exactly what will happen as you study this commentary. It is power-packed and brimming over with new insight into familiar passages".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther The following pages will explain themselves. Their object is to set before the reader a brief but intelligible account of the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther, and a history of the times to which they belong. An endeavour has been made to omit nothing that calls for comment or explanation, and thus to present the Biblical student with a work that, while serving the purposes of a commentary, forms a continuous narrative, and is of manageable size. Its distinguishing peculiarity is the use made in it of recent monumental discoveries, more especially of the inscriptions of Cyrus; and the scholar will notice one or two illustrations of Holy Writ that are here given for the first time. Those who wish for more detailed information regarding the newly-found records of the past, and the testimony they bear to the truth of the Old Testament Scriptures, may refer to the volumes entitled 'Fresh Light from the Ancient Monuments,' 'Assyria: its Princes, Priests and People,' and 'The Hittites; or, the Story of a Forgotten Empire,' published by the Religious Tract Society.
