Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A haunting, beautiful first novel by the bestselling author of A Long Way Gone. Named one of the Christian Science Monitor's best fiction books of the year. When Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone was published in 2007, it soared to the top of bestseller lists, becoming an instant classic: a harrowing account of Sierra Leone's civil war and the fate of child soldiers that "everyone in the world should read" (The Washington Post). Now Beah, whom Dave Eggers has called "arguably the most read African writer in contemporary literature," has returned with his first novel, an affecting, tender parable about postwar life in Sierra Leone. At the center of Radiance of Tomorrow are Benjamin and Bockarie, two longtime friends who return to their hometown, Imperi, after the civil war. The village is in ruins, the ground covered in bones. As more villagers begin to come back, Benjamin and Bockarie try to forge a new community by taking up their former posts as teachers, but they're beset by obstacles: a scarcity of food; a rash of murders, thievery, rape, and retaliation; and the depredations of a foreign mining company intent on sullying the town's water supply and blocking its paths with electric wires. As Benjamin and Bockarie search for a way to restore order, they're forced to reckon with the uncertainty of their past and future alike. With the gentle lyricism of a dream and the moral clarity of a fable, Radiance of Tomorrow is a powerful novel about preserving what means the most to us, even in uncertain times.

Book excerpt: An ancient power unleashed from its prison. Fleets summoned by oaths old and new alike. A rising tide of war that may consume the galaxy! Captain Morgan Casimir's mission to stop a war has ended in a nightmare. In the heart of an ignored nebula, trapped behind a ring of newborn stars, she has awoken a creature of another time: the horde of biological starships who call themselves the Infinite. Fifty thousand years ago, the Infinite drove the galaxy's Alavan Precursors to a grave mistake that destroyed all that was. Unleashed once more by the very people Morgan Casimir sought to stop, the Infinite now threaten an entirely new era. The only thing standing in their way is a fragile alliance of old enemies, determined to keep them contained in the Astoroko Nebula. But when that ancient prison fails, the galaxy must stand together-or watch the beginning of a golden age dissolve into apocalypse...

Book The Religion of Tomorrow

Download or read book The Religion of Tomorrow written by Ken Wilber and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative examination of how the great religious traditions can remain relevant in modern times by incorporating scientific truths learned about human nature over the last century A single purpose lies at the heart of all the great religious traditions: awakening to the astonishing reality of the true nature of ourselves and the universe. At the same time, through centuries of cultural accretion and focus on myth and ritual as ends in themselves, this core insight has become obscured. Here, Ken Wilber provides a path for re-envisioning a religion of the future that acknowledges the evolution of humanity in every realm while remaining faithful to that original spiritual vision. For the traditions to attract modern men and women, Wilber asserts, they must incorporate the extraordinary number of scientific truths learned about human nature in just the past hundred years—for example, about the mind and brain, emotions, and the growth of consciousness—that the ancients were simply unaware of and thus were unable to include in their meditative systems. Taking Buddhism as an example, Wilber demonstrates how his comprehensive Integral Approach—which is already being applied to several world religions by some of their adherents—can avert a “cultural disaster of unparalleled proportions”: the utter neglect of the glorious upper reaches of human potential by the materialistic postmodern worldview. Moreover, he shows how we can apply this approach to our own spiritual practice. This, his most sweeping work since Sex, Ecology, Spirituality, is a thrilling call for wholeness, inclusiveness, and unity in the religions of tomorrow.

Book Sisters of Tomorrow

Download or read book Sisters of Tomorrow written by Lisa Yaszek and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthology of stories, essays, poems, and illustrations by the women of early science fiction For nearly half a century, feminist scholars, writers, and fans have successfully challenged the notion that science fiction is all about "boys and their toys," pointing to authors such as Mary Shelley, Clare Winger Harris, and Judith Merril as proof that women have always been part of the genre. Continuing this tradition, Sisters of Tomorrow: The First Women of Science Fiction offers readers a comprehensive selection of works by genre luminaries, including author C. L. Moore, artist Margaret Brundage, and others who were well known in their day, including poet Julia Boynton Green, science journalist L. Taylor Hansen, and editor Mary Gnaedinger. Providing insightful commentary and context, this anthology documents how women in the early twentieth century contributed to the pulp-magazine community and showcases the content they produced, including short stories, editorial work, illustrations, poetry, and science journalism. Yaszek and Sharp's critical annotation and author biographies link women's work in the early science fiction community to larger patterns of feminine literary and cultural production in turn-of-the-twentieth-century America. In a concluding essay, the award-winning author Kathleen Ann Goonan considers such work in relation to the history of women in science and engineering and to the contemporary science fiction community itself.

Book Nemesis

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Nemesis written by Mark Binmore and published by Mark Binmore. This book was released on 2017-10-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After A Sorta Fairytale was published, I was inundated with requests to talk more about my prose lyrics. One part of me felt that the text should speak for itself and that to 'explain' would be like naming the colours of a painting while forgetting to look at the picture. This was why I only explained some of the words and meanings contained within the book. Another part of me wanted to acknowledge the genuine interest people were showing and so I replied, haphazardly it seemed, to those who would have asked. For this publication I have decided to continue the theme but this time in full. I have, in response, provided some background to the pieces in the hope that the understanding of the words and meanings may have some uniformity. This, of course, will go part of the way to explain them, for it is also my hope that everyone who reads them may hold their own interpretation. I have written about them by searching for the genesis of the words in diaries and notebooks I have kept and so the background has, as a result, the flavour of a personal journal. It is, in a way, my book of days. It’s only when you finish the book – the stories and what they are saying – that you know. I write a piece. I work on it for a while and then leave it. I might not go back to these words for three, maybe six months. When I do go back, that’s where I try and see what the emotional feeling was, what was in the words. There is also reflection contained within this publication as I revisit just a few pieces, a process that presents (so I have been told) a fascinating portrait of a writer in a constant state of evolution. I have re-written some elements whilst keeping the essence of verse – making these something of a Director’s Cut but in word, not vision. For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit some of my works and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them and now these selections have another layer of work woven into their fabric. Nemesis has an arrangement of journeys, in the rain, through the length of a lifetime, amongst history, between emotions, and journeys across great oceans. So although it’s not a ‘themed’ collection of words, as such, there is an underlying connection between the pieces. These notes are only part of the equation.
