Book Eye Corps

Download or read book Eye Corps written by Jack Walker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a young man who was drafted into the army in 1964 and who ended up in Vietnam as a marine recon company commander at the DMZ in 1967. While a war story, it is more importantly about growing up in a combat zone with the help of senior mentors and a bit of luck, while dealing with a tenacious enemy as well as politicians thousands of miles from the battlefield. It is also a portrait of America in the troubled 1960s.

Download or read book Praying for Slack A Marine Corps Tank Commander in Viet Nam written by Robert E. Peavey and published by . This book was released on with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two different wars were fought in Vietnam, the jungle-and-booby-trap one down south, and the WWII-like one up on the DMZ. "I was one of a handful whose Vietnam tour was evenly split between the First and Third Marine Divisions, and saw, firsthand, the difference 170 miles could make during the war's bloodiest year." Corporal Robert Peavey was a tank commander in I Corps (Eye Corps) on the DMZ when LBJ ordered a bombing halt over the North. His compelling first-hand account chronicles operations just south of the 'Z, operations that most Vietnam War histories have completely ignored. Peavey offers detailed, understandable explanations of combat strategy, strengths and shortcomings of standard-issue armament, and inter-service rivalries.

It opens with a brief backdrop of the history of Vietnam, the political atmosphere in South Vietnam, a short bio of the senior military leadership on both sides, and what led the US to the landing of marines on March 8, 1965. Maps, personal pictures, and charts supplement the narrative.

Book US Marine Corps Tank Crewman 1965 70

Download or read book US Marine Corps Tank Crewman 1965 70 written by Ed Gilbert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1960, following Korea, tanks and their crews had proved themselves to be a fundamental part of the Marine Corps' combined arms team. When the Marines were ordered to Vietnam in 1965, they took their tanks with them. This book explores this decision, which created a political storm. The presence of the tanks became a lightning rod for accusations of an 'escalation' of the war. Nevertheless, the tanks not only proved their value in the anti-guerrilla campaigns, but also amid the bitter conventional fighting and extraordinary casualties at Hue City. The ability to undertake such radical change and to prevail demonstrated the versatility, courage and tenacity that are the hallmarks of the 'ordinary' Marine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is late January 1968 when the first three incoming rounds hit Con Thien. It is undeniably the most terrifying event the rookie US Army soldiers have ever endured. Their doggie platoon sergeant, Walter Walling, who does not tolerate disrespect up or down, does his best to calm his troops. But with a North Vietnamese Army who likes laying in a few rounds and forcing the enemy to run, his job serving on the DMZ is a challenging one. As Sergeant Walling and his men, all from varying backgrounds and parts of the United States, do their best to learn an unfamiliar terrain and prepare for battle, the young American fighting men must bravely face the possibility of death while serving their country. But as a fight for power soon reveals the horrors of war in all its glory, one thing becomes certain: none of the men will return home the same as they were before. In this military story based on true events, a group of American soldiers find themselves at the end of a divided line between North and South Vietnam during 1968 and 1969.

Book excerpt: "We live together under the thick canopy, each searching for the other; the same leeches and mosquitoes that feed on our blood feed on his blood." John Edmund Delezen felt a kinship with the people he was instructed to kill in Vietnam; they were all at the mercy of the land. His memoir begins when he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was sent to Vietnam in March of 1967. He volunteered for the Third Force Recon Company, whose job it was to locate and infiltrate enemy lines undetected and map their locations and learn details of their status. The duty was often painful both physically and mentally. He was stricken with malaria in November of 1967, wounded by a grenade in February of 1968 and hit by a bullet later that summer. He remained in Vietnam until December, 1968. Delezen writes of Vietnam as a man humbled by a mysterious country and horrified by acts of brutality. The land was his enemy as much as the Vietnamese soldiers. He vividly describes the three-canopy jungle with birds and monkeys overhead that could be heard but not seen, venomous snakes hiding in trees and relentless bugs that fed on men. He recalls stumbling onto a pit of rotting Vietnamese bodies left behind by American forces, and days when fierce hunger made a bag of plasma seem like an enticing meal. He writes of his fallen comrades and the images of war that still pervade his dreams. This book contains many photographs of American Marines and Vietnam as well as three maps.
