Book excerpt: Direct detection of extrasolar Jovian planets is a major scientific motivation for the construction of future extremely large telescopes such as the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Such detection will require dedicated high-contrast AO systems. Since the properties of Jovian planets and their parent stars vary enormously between different populations, the instrument must be designed to meet specific scientific needs rather than a simple metric such as maximum Strehl ratio. We present a design for such an instrument, the Planet Formation Imager (PFI) for TMT. It has four key science missions. The first is the study of newly-formed planets on 5-10 AU scales in regions such as Taurus and Ophiucus--this requires very small inner working distances that are only possible with a 30m or larger telescope. The second is a robust census of extrasolar giant planets orbiting mature nearby stars. The third is detailed spectral characterization of the brightest extrasolar planets. The final targets are circumstellar dust disks, including Zodiacal light analogs in the inner parts of other solar systems. To achieve these, PFI combines advanced wavefront sensors, high-order MEMS deformable mirrors, a coronagraph optimized for a finely-segmented primary mirror, and an integral field spectrograph.

In an adaptive optics system, the output from a wavefront sensor is used to calculate corrections that actively remove distortions from an image. The applications of adaptive optics in vision science have received considerable impetus from the knowledge developed by astronomers about how to correct images using AO technology. It is expected that developments in adaptive optics will radically change the face of astronomy in the 21st century. These systems will largely overcome the main limitation of ground-based telescopes, namely the severe reduction in image quality caused by turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere. Intended for use at near infrared wavelengths, adaptive optics allow imaging and spectroscopy at the limit of resolution imposed by optical diffraction an advance in astronomer's ability to view the heavens unparalleled since the invention of the telescope. AO is now also entering clinical medicine in the field of ophthalmology and other related fields. This new book presents several hundred current abstracts in the field, each fully indexed, for ease of access and contains a CD ROM for further research.

Book excerpt: We describe an exploratory optical design for the Narrow Field InfraRed Adaptive Optics (AO) System (NFIRAOS) Petite, a proposed adaptive optics system for the Thirty Meter Telescope Project. NFIRAOS will feed infrared spectrograph and wide-field imaging instruments with a diffraction limited beam. The adaptive optics system will require multi-guidestar tomographic wavefront sensing and multi-conjugate AO correction. The NFIRAOS Petite design specifications include two small 60 mm diameter deformable mirrors (DM's) used in a woofer/tweeter or multiconjugate arrangement. At least one DM would be a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) DM. The AO system would correct a 10 to 30 arcsec diameter science field as well as laser guide stars (LGS's) located within a 60 arcsec diameter field and low-order or tip/tilt natural guide stars (NGS's) within a 60 arcsec diameter field. The WFS's are located downstream of the DM's so that they can be operated in true closed-loop, which is not necessarily a given in extremely large telescope adaptive optics design. The WFS's include adjustable corrector elements which correct the static aberrations of the AO relay due to field position and LGS distance height.

Book excerpt: In the last decade, adaptive optics systems have been implemented on all the major ground based telescopes and have proven reliable tools for correcting the image to near the diffraction limit. However, the correction from these systems is limited to a narrow field of view. This dissertation address the challenges of widening the corrected field of single conjugate adaptive optics by properly using statistical information on the optical turbulence profile of the atmosphere above the telescope, and by optimizing the trade-off between image quality and field of view. Altair is the facility adaptive optics system for the 8-meter Gemini North telescope and marks the historical beginning of wide field adaptive optics. Its performance evaluation in Part One is the first on-sky comparison of sparse field images from an altitude-conjugated and a ground-conjugated deformable mirror. All of the other basic aspects of Altair's performance are characterized for use by the Gemini community to plan observations. We also study and report. on techniques for extrapolating the edge of the deformable mirror, a critical step in altitude-conjugated mode. In Part Two we develop a point spread function model for Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) that is based on analytic forms of the phase power spectral density. This model has been used for feasibility studies of GLAO on Gemini, and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), currently the most advanced extremely large telescope project. The TMT will be an adaptive telescope that has science goals for the huge 81 square arcminute field of the Wide Field Optical Spectrograph (WFOS). We will show that WFOS-GLAO provides useful gains and will operate in the very wide GLAO (VWGLAO) regime, which has no additional overhead for seeing improved operation. To identify the VWGLAO regime we use statistical turbulence profile models and examine anisoplanatism in terms of image quality metrics relevant to the science that GLAO will likely assist.
