But with Clara’s inherited ability to read minds and see the future, she’s also the premier crime solver… You don’t have to be a psychic to know: The rodeo is coming to town! Clara’s boyfriend, Rick Sanders, invites her to the show to meet his high school buddy and expert calf roper, Wes Carlton. But when Clara’s Quinn Sense offers her a disturbing vision involving a rodeo clown, she worries that there will be more danger at the rodeo than just the traditional bucking bronco. Of course, her premonition turns out to be accurate, and a dead body is discovered behind the concert stage, strangled by Wes’s piggin’ string. Rick is sure that there’s no way Wes could have murdered anyone, but he’s going to need Clara’s Quinn Sense to keep the authorities from roping the wrong suspect...

Book excerpt: Suny Davis has plenty of reasons to swear. Everyone at boarding school hates her since she learned her social skills from hundred-year-old books. Her father's a celebrated paranormal researcher (who might be a fake). She's being transferred to-what?-a college for young geniuses? Her father's infuriating (but handsome) assistant, Anthony, is assigned to babysit her. And then she's the last to see the student who's murdered in the (supposedly haunted) science building! But is the murderer really a poltergeist? That would give Suny even more reason to swear. When her father asks Anthony to investigate and he has the audacity to suggest she help him by using the psychic abilities he's sure she possesses, Suny really swears! Swears to find the killer with good old-fashioned detective work. Swears not to use any of her psychic powers. Well, maybe a little...

Book Berryman s Henry

Download or read book Berryman s Henry written by Samuel Fisher Dodson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berryman’s Henry: Living at the Intersection of Need and Art offers scholars and students the first thorough and well-researched vehicle into John Berryman’s epic poem The Dream Songs. Through a close reading of the text, an examination of the history of its criticism and some of Berryman’s letters, notes, and pertinent manuscripts, Sam Dodson offers the reader a solid starting point to appreciate the presiding structure and thematic focus of this American classic. This structure, resulting from the poet’s crafting and the poem’s internal growth, is illustrated in the text by more than thirty reproductions of some of the Dream Song drafts in progress. No existing critical work examines anywhere near the number of individual Dream Songs as this reader’s guide, which will enable students and teachers to enter Berryman’s difficult poem with confidence and a proper sense of direction. Its purpose is to provide the beginning reader and the scholar with a map for approaching this large work and finding their way through its elegiac structure and appreciating its unity. A close look at the poem's language and stylistic innovations, epic qualities and author’s poetics, and most especially the elegiac movement of the poem, will allow even the novice reader to enter Henry’s world. The elegies as a whole provide the note of mourning that is at the core of Berryman’s epic.

  • Author : Alan Poling
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 1461576946
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book Psychology written by Alan Poling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology: A Behavioral Overview is an introductory text with an orienting per spective that is frankly behavioral rather than eclectic. This focus is made quite clear in the first chapter of the book, but in the remainder it also becomes clear that such a focus permits coverage of most of the topics found in the more common introductory text. Actually, the next five chapters (dealing with psy chology as a scienc~, methodology, evolution, physiology, and learning) are in many ways comparable to the treatments provided in more eclectic introductory texts. The behavioral focus and the departure from traditional approaches be come most significant in the last six chapters which deal with traditional psycho logical topics (e. g. , language, child development, and personality)-but deal with them systematically in terms of the concepts and principles introduced in the chapters on evolution and physiology, and especially in the chapter on learning. Using the concepts provided early in the text to interpret complex aspects of human behavior provides valuable justification for those concepts, as well as an opportunity for improved understanding of them. Although students will not make extensive contact with the variety of the oretical approaches found in the typical text, they will become especially compe tent in the use of behavioral concepts and principles to interpret and understand many of the topics of traditional importance in psychology.

Book Channeling Into the New Age

Download or read book Channeling Into the New Age written by Henry Gordon and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is the New Age movement? Why has it become the dominant force of the Zeitgeist, invading nearly every aspect of American life? After years of researching this burgeoning movement, columnist, author, and magician Henry Gordon is one of the world's foremost experts on every aspect of the New Age - its derivations and content, the people most involved in it, the forces that motivate and prolong it, and the enormous amount of money changing hands as the me generation takes on astrology, crystals, runes, channeling, mysticism, yoga, acupuncture, herbal medicine, telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, biofeedback, biorhythms, reincarnation, and every sort of psychological technique for heightened awareness. At the forefront of the brouhaha is high-profile actress, lecturer, and free spirit Shirley MacLaine. This book is strictly unauthorized - a freewheeling and spirited roast of the New Age, including a history of trends leading to the movement (rooted in 19th-century occultism), and observations on the vast amount of coverage given to the movement (and to New Age celebrities) by the print and broadcast media.Although Gordon delights in skewering the absurdities of the New Age, there's a serious emphasis to his research and his message: While the gurus are busy channeling into new realities, they are becoming phenomenally rich without contributing in any significant way to the alleviation of human unhappiness - and very often, without making any sense at all.Sharp wit and common sense. Wise and often hilarious. -Rocky Mountain News

Book Extrasensory Perception

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars from around the world collaborate to explain the history of parapsychology, the study of extrasensory perception (ESP), and the arguments of skeptics and supporters in this fascinating collection. This two-volume set introduces ESP—also known as anomalous cognition—and psychokinesis, addressing the history, research, philosophy, and scientific theories surrounding the phenomena. With contributions from leading research scientists from within the field of parapsychology and other areas of study, this reference addresses the fundamental questions that the evidence of ESP evokes; examines parapsychology research from all over the world; and explores the controversies, skepticism, and contemporary criticism disparaging the field. Written for a multidisciplinary audience ranging from physicists to psychologists to lay persons, the volumes present the scientific validity of the field. Volume 1 addresses the historical, philosophical, skeptical, and research viewpoints; volume 2 lays out the current theories on ESP. Chapters reveal how strict scientific protocols and state-of-the-art technologies enable scientists—at sites such as Harvard and Cornell universities to their international counterparts in Amsterdam, Austria, and Asia—to pinpoint and investigate ESP abilities.
